Unwell Women Reviews

It will make you mad when you realize how long women have been ignored by medical professionals.

I bought the book and listened to the Audio version as well. I'm pretty picky about audio book narrators and this one was great. The book was so validating and rage inducing at the same time. Its so clear to see the arc of history that lead to us STILL feeling dismissed and gaslit by conventional medicine and mental health practices. I think everyone should read, absorb and be ignited to do better for women. A phenomenal contribution to women's wellness.

Amazing. Very shortly after i began reading the book, I found myself saying 'this cant be true'. However time and time again the author provides citations and lots of quotes to back up her discussion and statements. Reading on my Kindle it was easy to do my own research as well which also confirmed the facts and stories i double checked. I say that because many readers will likely experience, as I did, shock at the indifference to women's health payed by male doctors described in the book. I recommend it to anyone especially if you are interested in women's health, women's rights, or medical history. This is not just for women, I am a male and found it fascinating.

Dr. Cleghorn has provided an extremely complete survey of the history of medicine as it impacted women. Things were not so good for men during the millennia; it was simply too difficult to know the nature of ill ness. Much worse for women because what men thought they knew was so false. Nobodies fault until the Reaissance when the advances of science tried to fit the traditional thinking. Many a square peg was driven into a round hole! This book is a good place to begin to explore a vast landscape.

Information presented with too much miscellaneous information and gets repetituve. Important subject., but author needs to learn how to present in a interesting and readable format.

It was a gift but well received.

After years of pain, 13 surgeries, 9 epidurals, and seizure meds, I decided not to listen to doctors but to listen to my own body. Unwell Women validates me.
-
After only a few pages in, I discovered that they have the incorrect definition of endometriosis. If you’re going to write a book about women suffering from misdiagnosis, at least have the correct definition of an incurable disease that affects 1 in 10 women. Couldn’t read the rest of the book due to not being able to trust the information. Women don’t need misinformation spread about our bodies.

I really liked the idea and the premise of the book but in order to make it relevant the author felt that pretty much for each time the word 'woman' is mentioned there is a caveat such as 'of course not all women have uteruses, and not all people who have uteruses, or who menstruate, are women', while the word 'man' appears without the same verbal equilibristics. So once again, a book which was planned to be about women as a sex class used gender in the sense of sex and tried to include everyone.
-
I lost the will at reading 'sex assigned at birth..' and 'not all women have uteruses'. Have no idea how the author can do all that research and then tiptoe around and pander to the trans issue How Cleghorn can believe that baffles me but maybe it's because she's scared of being cancelled.

This book honestly goes to show that even after hundreds of years women are still misdiagnosed and mistreated in the health care setting.
Would definitely recommend if you're interested in looking at the history of this issue and want to see how far it has gone in the past and the present. -
Terrific book full of fascinating [horrifying, enraging, downright awful] stories that we'd all do well to acknowledge . Really goes to show how far behind women's healthcare is and unpacks exactly how it's ended up being that way. One of those books you want to tell everyone about. Really interesting read, I highly recommend it!

Unfortunately, I DNF after leaving it to one side for a while after starting to read it.
I don't disagree that the book is full of info and a very important one.
Is just that the way is executed is not for me, and I am a huge non fiction fan!
