Se una notte d'inverno un viaggiatore 2.0
Essere uno scrittore affermato ha alcuni aspetti negativi. Ci sono scrittori meno affermati che si credono superiori e che lo invidiano per ciò che ha conseguito; aspiranti scrittori che richiedono il suo aiuto per editare e pubblicare le loro prime opere, anche se magari non valgono un granché; persone che cercano ogni genere di input per arrivare al suo stesso livello, e magari guadagnare più di lui; imitatori che sfruttano il suo guizzo creativo per scrivere dei pastiche delle sue opere. Dietro le pagine di questo romanzo breve c'è tutto questo e tanto altro - che dire di alcuni personaggi che sembrano somigliare a scrittori veri? - oltre a Felix, il gatto dello scrittore che è anche il suo pseudonimo sul web. Il tutto senza neanche muoversi dalla scrivania - tranne forse che per prepararsi un tè o per far giocare Felix - e con tanto di colpo di scena finale. -
Well, what can I say about this book!? It's just perfect and a wonderful achievment. What a difference from The Library which I read before. Now it was what I expected The Library would be. I can't say much about the plot without have a lot of spoilers so let's just say we can find in this short book innovation and creativity (the elements I most appreciate in a writter), simplicity but not simpleness and a nice engendred plot with a lot of interpretation (which I also appreciate a lot in a book). In the end you find out that a smail and easy to read book about everyday life can be as profound and intriguing as some of the big and famous novels. I give it 5 stars without any regret and I'm out to find his next book: The Last Book! Well, I mean he's not being literal here!

La trama praticamente inesistente si regge sulle lamentele di uno scrittore egocentrico e disagiato che mantiene controvoglia una corrispondenza con 5 persone (che neanche gli stanno simpatiche) che gli propongono di fare una cosa per lui inconcepibile. Fine.

Como descrever este livro? Foi um misto de emoções do início ao fim. Nada conhecia acerca da obra, muito menos sobre o autor. Acabou por ser uma compra compulsiva, mais pelo título e a capa do que pela sinopse (nem a li!).
Desde a primeira página que fiquei deveras apaixonada pela escrita do autor. Foi um género de escrita que me deu vontade de querer todas as obras do autor. Apaixonei-me pela sua forma de escrever. Apesar de tudo, houve certo momento que a escrita não foi suficiente e acabei por perder o interesse. Pensei em desistir do livro, deixá-lo de lado e quem saber o ler mais tarde. Mas houve algo que fez-me continuar a leitura. Quando terminei, terminei-o de coração cheio. É um livro bom, pode parecer confuso e até cansativo a meio da leitura, mas vale a pena continuar.
Sem dúvida alguma que recomendo, mas não queiram ler a história a correr. Vão com calma, demorem o vosso tempo e aproveitem. Acreditem que no final terminarão a leitura satisfeitos.

INTRODUCTION: Zoran Zivkovic is an author who should be a household name for any lover of Eastern European fantastica, that blend of the real and unreal set in a world that is both familiar and strange and whose best known practitioners in the Western world are probably Kafka, Bulgakov and Lem.
Over the past 10-15 years I have been reading various works of Zoran Zivkovic as they have been appearing in English, though I sort of lost track of his books in the past few years until yesterday and a pdf e-arc of The Ghostwriter courtesy of PS Publishing which entranced me from the first page, made me gather again the books I already have and buy a few more from Amazon Kindle for good measure, so now I have all his English language works except the last novel, The Five Wonders of the Danube which has not yet been published in the UK or the US. Expect more reviews of his work as I read or occasionally even reread them...

OVERVIEW/ANALYSIS: "The Ghostwriter" is a lighter and funnier piece but with a serious underlying theme that took over my reading yesterday and I could not put it down until finished. The first few lines quoted below attracted my attention and from then on the virtual doings of our narrator and his email obsession as well as his adventures both past and present with his spoiled tomcat Felix proved impossible to resist.
"HAD THE EMAIL STARTED ANY OTHER WAY, I certainly would have deleted it immediately. For a long time I have saved almost every message and replied to most of them, but finally I came to my senses. Now I only save the ones that seem important because there is less and less time. But what writer could resist the flattery of a devotee, even an anonymous one?
Highly Esteemed Writer,
I am a great fan of your work. I have a business proposal to make in this regard. Would you be interested in hearing about it?

An Admirer"
So we meet the narrator, a quite successful but loner writer who is going currently through a "drought" and who has developed an email addiction. For a while now he has been entertaining long email conversations with four other persons, all identified by pseudonyms as he also uses one too, being "Felix" in cyberspace: "OpenSea" - a bitter unsuccessful writer, "Banana" a wannabe lady writer with a fixation on our hero, "Pandora" an elderly neighboring lady with an old dog and "P-0" a writer of pastiches (fan fiction) of our hero's work...
As it happens all four correspondents, the "admirer" and Felix the cat, gang on our hero in a convoluted tale that is both superbly brought together and utterly funny. The clues to the identity of the unknown correspondent are scattered throughout the story and if by the end you are still in doubt, an excellent afterword by Michael Morrison will spell it for you, but "The Ghostwriter" will enchant nonetheless and you may find yourself visiting Amazon and getting some of the numerous inexpensive drm-free ebooks of the author or some of the superbly realized print editions which are more boutique-like...
Overall The Ghostwriter is highly recommended and a very good introduction to the author's work. -

Ovo je drugi put da čitam ovaj roman. Prvi put sam ga pročitao pre više od 5 godina... Ovaj roman je svojevrsna misterija. Pisac dobija mejl od izvesnog poštovaoca koji traži ,,pisca u najam". Pored poštovaoca pisac se dopisuje sa još četiri prijatelja i pokušava da otkrije identitet poštovaoca. Iako sam znao odgovor na ovu zagonetku od starta, to me nije omelo da ponovo uživam u romanu i da ispratim kako Živković vešto daje nagoveštaje o identitetu poštovaoca, koji su mi, naravno, promakli u prvom čitanju. Knjiga je takođe puna odličnog humora tako da je uživanje bilo potpuno. Sasvim sigurno je ,,Pisac u najam" meni omiljeno Živkovićevo delo.

Prendete un tardo pomeriggio di nebbia nella provincia Milanese e la sottoscritta che come ogni settimana fa il suo consueto giro in libreria, anche solo per sentire il profumo della carta. Fra un passaggio tra le nuove uscite e uno tra i gialli mi torna in mente un’immagine vista su “il Libraio”e un titolo “Il Ghostwriter”.
Una sedia vuota su uno sfondo scuro e un titolo che già di per se è un mistero, è bastato questo per attirarmi. Pensate poi ad un autore che si presta a scrivere un libro e a cederne la paternità ad un altro solo per denaro. Gloria, successo, critiche, fallimento…tutto vissuto di riflesso e di nascosto. Impensabile per una come me.
Comunque, lo cerco tra gli scaffali ma non lo trovo, eppure sono certa che sia una nuova uscita. Non ricordo il nome dell’autore (vi sfido a ricordarlo un nome così!!) ma ecco che la geek che è in me arriva in soccorso. Ho registrato il libro nella lista dei desideri di Anobii. Zoran Živković !!! Di corsa alla Z, niente! Nelle nuova uscite, niente! Lo chiedo al desk, niente! Questo genera in me l’impulso irrefrenabile di averlo. Esco, altra libreria, scaffale, nuove uscite, desk, niente anche qui. Terza libreria, stessa risposta, niente! Torna la Geek, e si fa un giro online, disponibile praticamente ovunque ma tutti con consegna in orario lavorativo standard. Grazie, impossibile che io sia lì a ritirarlo. Sto per desistere quando leggo che una famosa catena di librerie sul suo online shop prevede la consegna in negozio. Controllo, 10 euro sulla poste pay ci sono, e vai, click. Acquistato. Sette giorni di attesa ed ho finalmente in mano il testo. Lessing (e non la Campari, vi prego!!) diceva ” L’attesa del piacere è essa stessa il piacere”.
Il libro parla di uno scrittore piuttosto noto che riceve la richiesta da un “Ammiratore” di scrivere un romanzo per lui. Offeso ma incuriosito decide di vederci chiaro e i due iniziano una corrispondenza via e-mail interrotta solo dal consueto scambio di messaggi con altri 4 personaggi piuttosto eccentrici . I 5 hanno una cosa in comune, si firmano usando uno pseudonimo. Ognuno di loro, per diversi motivi, chiede al nostro protagonista di scrivere un romanzo. Si viene a creare un groviglio di messaggi che generano una trama fitta e intricata, interrotta solo dalle vicissitudini di Felix, il gatto di casa. Ad un certo punto la rete di messaggi è così ingarbugliata che non si riesce a smettere di leggere, spinti dalla voglia di capire dove l’autore voglia andare a parare.
Živković ha uno stile diretto e lineare, ma a volte, per i miei gusti, troppo denso di particolari. Ci sono stati punti in cui ho davvero faticato, chiedendomi perchè indugiasse così tanto su certe minuzie. Di contro ci sono alcuni aspetti volutamente non chiariti ed abbozzati. La storia porta ad una riflessione sul ruolo dell’autore e sul suo rapporto con i lettori e con le sue stesse opere.
Se devo essere sincera non so dirvi se mi sia piaciuto o meno. Ci sono elementi che mi porterebbero a dire di sì, tanti quanti mi spingerebbero a dire di no. Ma questo accade quando si insegue una copertina, suggestionati dall’idea che dietro quell’immagine ci sia proprio quello che ti aspetti. E invece no, o forse sì. Ma tornando al caro vecchio Lessing, se l’attesa del piacere è essa stessa il piacere, la parte più piacevole è stata di gran lunga la ricerca e l’attesa di questo libro.

I'm not really sure what to say about this book....it was just an odd little story about a writer who dealt with a bit of OCD, I believe....hence he was constantly making sure that every single email he received was saved and had the computer speaker up very loud so he could hear every email 'Gong' as it came to his inbox. He was obsessed with his cat, Felix.....and I believe he had a few imaginary email friends that were actually him trying to get his interest in writing sparked again. It was just a strange book and I really didn't see the purpose of it other than to let the author write about himself for purely narcissistic reasons....

Mais um bom livro deste autor. Não tão bom como os anteriores que li dele, ainda assim, muito bom. E com um final bastante interessante, que eu nunca imaginei.

Esta foi a minha segunda leitura de uma obra deste autor, e efetivamente, tenho de referir que os dois livros que li, foram repletos de imaginação e de humor.
No entanto, gostei muito mais da obra “O Livro”, em comparação com “O Escritor-Fantasma”.
Esta é uma narrativa que também nos traz o humor e as tramas originais típicas deste autor.
Gostei de ler. Ficamos presos aos sucessivos e-mails, e à vida do protagonista, que é um escritor, e do seu gato desastrado - Felix 🙂

Ao longo da leitura o autor vai-nos dando pistas para desvendar quem será o seu admirador secreto, assim como nos vai dando a conhecer as vidas, as motivações e os pedidos dos seus restantes correspondentes virtuais.
É uma narrativa engraçada, sui generis e hilariante, com um final caricato.
Já comecei a ler “A Biblioteca”, outra obra deste autor. 🤩 -
As commonly happens in its works, here the story revolves around books,writing, writers, etc.
A writer facing a temporary block spends his morning exchanging e-mails with some fans and a colleague.
They all come with a specific request that as the story progress become more interconnected than it seemed at first sight.
In his usual style of fantastic situations the story unveils to a somewhat expected ending.
Unlike his other works, here the ambiance is not so dark and quite joyful times, to me almost exceedingly silly.
This edition has, at the end, an analysis by Michael Morrison where he details the several layers and plays done by Zivkovic. Unfortunately for, most were quite beyond my ability to grasp them at first read.
A enjoyable read but for me a little silly and not the best of his works. -
Muito divertido e leve - foi uma boa escolha para ler durante a quarentena -, mas com muitas camadas escondidas. O posfácio ajuda a fazer outras linhas de leitura, mas nem é necessário. Gostei muito. Fez-me lembrar a escrita de Kafka e de Jorge Luís Borges.

Muito aborrecido, não percebi de todo qual o propósito deste livro e senti que desperdicei o meu precioso tempo. Demorei mais a ler este livro super fininho do que alguns de 300/400 páginas.

Continuo a descobrir a obra de Zoran Živković. Já o queria fazer há bastante tempo, mas confesso que foi a vinda do autor a Portugal, e o envolvimento da Roda dos Livros numa sessão de apresentação que me levou à leitura de A Biblioteca, O Livro e O Escritor-fantasma num curto espaço de tempo.
Recomendo a quem ainda não leu O Escritor-fantasma que não avance na leitura deste post. Eu sei que não é simpático para quem vem aqui à procura de sugestões de leitura, encontrar um texto cheio de spoilers, e eu acho que nunca o fiz, mas neste caso vai ter de ser, pois não consigo escrever sobre este livro sem começar pelo fim, pela mistura de surpresa e estranheza que me apanhou nas últimas páginas.
Despeço-me aqui dos que ainda não leram o livro, a quem apenas adianto que recomendo com algumas reservas, pois não faço a mínima ideia como é que vão reagir ao final. Desde um sorriso amarelo ao arremesso violento do livro, tudo é possível.

São pouco mais de cem páginas que se leem com a avidez de quem quer descobrir o final. Uma mistura de surrealismo e esquizofrenia, com uma grande dose de loucura. O Escritor, de quem nunca sabemos o nome, é cilindrado com dezenas de e-mails de várias origens. Após muita conversa virtual com os seus cinco correspondentes, em ritmo frenético, o Escritor percebe que, todos pretendem, cada um à sua maneira, que ele escreva para eles. Do admirador, que lhe pede claramente que seja escritor-fantasma do seu livro, à vizinha que lhe pede que lhe escreva um romance em homenagem ao cão que está a morrer, todos lhe querem “roubar” o talento e a originalidade.
No final (tcham tcham), quando o leitor percebe que não havia mais ninguém além do Escritor, e que todo o livro é uma manobra de diversão deste para superar um bloqueio, a sensação é a de quem vai aos apanhados!
A minha primeira reacção foi achar que não tinha percebido. No fundo entendi o que tinha acontecido, mas não quis acreditar que tinha sido tão bem enrolada. Preferi pensar “não pode ser isto”. Mas é. Li o livro com muito entusiasmo, até porque é bastante envolvente e de fácil leitura, mas no fim senti que um grande “tonta” me apareceu escrito na testa.
Uma leitura interessante, um exercício de escrita surpreendente e uma delícia para os apaixonados por gatos, que se vão perder de amores por Félix, o gato do escritor.
Quem leu até aqui sem ter lido o livro fez mal, mas eu avisei. Mesmo assim esperam-vos momentos deliciosos se se decidirem por esta leitura. Os outros, que já leram o livro, contem-me tudo. Também se sentiram um pouco… tontos? -
Zoran Živković continua a surpreender-me pela positiva, num intrincado labirinto que é este livro.
Um escritor com o síndroma da página branca - também conhecido por bloqueio ou falta de inspiração - começa a receber vários emails, o primeiro dum admirador secreto e os restantes de pessoas com quem se corresponde habitualmente. E se primeiro os emails são totalmente dispares entre si, aos poucos todos convergem para o mesmo tema, deixando o escritor baralhado, ao mesmo tempo que são deixadas pistas para o leitor perceber o que se passa.
Qualquer um dos livros que li deste autor prima pela complexidade das suas histórias, mas uma complexidade subtil, que nos leva a reflectir sobre o que realmente teremos lido depois de fechar as páginas. Porque não está tudo ali, às claras, há imensas entrelinhas que tornam as suas histórias ainda mais interessantes. E O Escritor-fantasma não é excepção.
Por fim, uma palavra para as histórias que envolvem Félix, o gato que o escritor adoptou e que, como qualquer gato, comete imensas tropelias e que trazem, para este livro, o humor a que o autor me começa a habituar (e que é delicioso). -
Možda mi je kod ovog romana najviše smetalo to što ide u jednom pravcu, to što je učauren u jednom vremenskom trenutku i nepostojanje opipljivih likova. Pa čak ni sama priča nema neki zaplet/rasplet, s obzirom da je veoma predvidiv ishod, mada je kraj donekle zadovoljavajuć, i to je povećalo ocenu sa dvojke na trojku, koja isprva nije bila u opsegu. Živković je, najverovatnije, pisac koji može da napiše nešto veliko, ali to ne želi. Ko zna da li je ovo napisano zbog nedostatka novca u džepu, radi navike ili radi reda ali je to delo koje namerno ne teži nečemu, već stagnira tražeći od čitaoca da se samo opusti tokom čitanja, i ništa više.

A humorous novella. I have to admit to not being the greatest cat fan in the world so it was strange reading so much about Felix..and no, it doesn't make me like them any more than previously! The tangled web woven round the writer is increasingly amusing though I am obviously one of those speedy readers that the writer dislikes, who doesn't read deep enough to see what is really there!

Well, I am used to more from this writer... More ingenuity, more complex stories, not this... Either that or I did not understand what he was trying to say.
The story is about a writer with OCD who's in constant communication with several people and each and every one of them wants something from him. It goes on to show how he starts dealing with all of that, but doesn't deal with it at all in the end.
Much ado about nothing, in my opinion. -
A clever book, full of humour and witty revelations about a writer's mind and routines. Rivalries between writers, challenges in both good and bad faith, and the everpresent influence of Felix,the Cat... A labirynth of possibilities in the guise of a mystery, with a clarifying epilogue.

Very nicely done, and translated, from Serbian. Story was good but much too long. About an author who is being pressured, through emails from 5 different people: to ghostwrite a book from someone he doesn't know; and the others to use a pseudonym to write his own books and help with theirs.

I like the plot construction, the little details that add up to a great writing technique. I like the analysis in the end. And it's very easy and quick to read.
But..it did not entertain me. And in the end that feeling prevailed. -

Uno scrittore famoso riceve una e-mail nella quale un suo fan, gli propone di scrivere un romanzo che verrà pubblicato con lo pseudonimo dell'ammiratore stesso. Da questa proposta si diramano tutti gli argomenti che uno scrittore affronta durante la stesura di un libro, i suoi vezzi, il modo di scrivere, di ricercare, di pubblicare, i suoi rapporti con i romanzi e con i suoi lettori. L'ambientazione di questo romanzo è in una sola stanza, quella dove c'è il computer che riceve e spedisce tutti i dialoghi elettronici tra "ammiratore" e altri conoscenti dello scrittore.
Ho preso questo libro perchè l'argomento sembrava interessante e perchè avevo già letto Zivkovic, la mia è stata una pessima scelta, palloso fino all''interruzione, mi è venuita la pallosite. L'argomento centrale in realtà è Felix, il gatto dello scrittore. Parecchio sconsigliato!
