Caught between desire and a promise…

Seth Compton knew from the first that his boss’s daughter was all wrong for him. She was too feisty, too damned independent and, at seven years his junior, too damned young. When she comes home with a college diploma and fiancé on her arm, though, he can’t quite remember all the reasons he held her at arm’s length.

It’s not just his jeans-tightening reaction to her all-grown-up curves. Something doesn’t feel right about her impending marriage, and he won’t rest until he’s stopped her from making the biggest mistake of her life.

The morning after her wild bachelorette party, Jody expected a hangover. The surprise? Waking up tied to a bed with sexy-as-sin Seth. He’s got some wild idea about proving they belong together, but she’s not buying it. Besides, she has a promise to keep that’s too close to her heart to risk, especially not with a man who, until now, made his disinterest plain.

No one ever said Seth backed down from a challenge. She’s going to make him work for it? No problem. Luckily for him, he has plenty of rope…

Warning: This story contains a bondage lovin’ cowboy who kidnaps and hogties a cowgirl to his bed and does all sorts of naughty things to her. Fun, right?

I want a Seth. When we meet him, he has been a very good boy for nearly 3 years. He promised Jodi’s daddy that he wouldn’t touch her until she finished college. This meant that no matter how hard she tried to seduce him, he resisted. Unfortunately for Seth, there is only so much rejection a girl can take. Jodi comes home a woman determined to move on with her life. Yes she loves him, but she isn’t a masochist, and he has hurt her one too many times. Marrying Paul has nothing to do with her feelings for him, but it is an easy way to keep him arms length if he lets her. Unfortunately, Seth isn’t an ordinary Cowboy. Seth is a Dominant Cowboy, and a Dominant cowboy in love at that. He isn’t going to give away what he has decided is his easily, especially when he decides that the marriage must be a sham. How can she hope to resist a full-blown Dom Seth charm attack?

Seth is so sexy. From his bad-boy attitude to his honest declarations of affection, I adored him. I don’t know how in the hell Jodi was not supposed to fall in love with him, I was by the end of the novella! He pushes and he pushes (as Doms do!), but he never pushes her to a place where she is uncomfortable or distressed. He tries to make her see what she will be missing with her marriage, but he never tries to take the decision out of her hands. My favourite scene is one involving a webcam and some restraints; it was so funny I laughed aloud, but I want you to find out the details for yourselves :D What I loved about him the most was his reasoning why they couldn’t be together; it was so unselfish yet realistic that it made me swoon a little. He didn’t want her to be something that she wasn’t for him.
Jodi was amazing. She didn’t ever deny her feelings, yet knew they were no good for her. When she came back to the ranch, she was determined not to give in to temptation and try to seduce him, yet he was determined that this time she would be the seduced. She didn’t stand a chance, and I honestly loved her more for the fact that she knew that was the case. She was funny and feisty, yet completely honest and caring with him too. I loved them together, yet there was the small problem in the shape of Paul!

The sex scenes were blooming amazing. He is hot and he likes domination; I was going to love him! One of the most refreshing things was the fact that she was so sexually inexperienced, yet had no sort of hang-ups about what she shouldn’t enjoy. The fact that they both enjoyed themselves, made me enjoy the scenes more. Together they were evaporating the ink on the page!

The blurb of this book hooked me immediately. Cowboys? A mild D/s theme? Yes please! :D However, this book is so much more than I imagined. I liked the whole cast; from the Mother that appeared in only a couple of scenes down to the main cast, everyone was likeable and well written. It was sweet, funny, sexy and also made me cry! I can tell I’ll be following the series.

OMG! This book was sooooo good! I am LOVING this series!

Full review reposted from my blog, Smitten with Reading...

    My Review:
This is book #2 of the Compass Brothers series. This book is about the 2nd oldest brother, Seth, who headed South to Texas to find is place in the world working at another family ranch. He's lived and worked there for the last 10 years, since Jody was 12 years old. Jody is the daughter of the ranch owner and she has had a crush on Seth ever since he came to work at the ranch. She's never made her pursuit a secret either. Seth was warned off Jody by her father when she was 18 years old. He wanted her to finish and experience the world through college and Seth respected his wishes. But now Jody has graduated from college and is home with a fiance in tow. After a blow-up at Christmas, Jody has decided to move on with her life and not chase after Seth any longer. Now Seth wonders if he's lost his chance with her and with her father's permission, kidnaps Jody to convince her to give Seth another chance.

Jody has been in love with Seth her entire life and, although she has a fiance, she is not in love with him (there are other reasons why they are engaged.) She's been saving herself for Seth so she has an innocence, but she is also really feisty, so she is a great match for Seth and his Dom leanings. They battle and wow, is it sexy. LOTS of passion for these two. They are both strong people, but at the basis of everything is the fact that they both truly love each other desperately.

Another hot book in the Compass brothers series. While these books are really hot and sexy, they are also really emotional. I cried several times throughout this book and for me, that is always a sign of a really good book. But I also laughed out loud a lot too. There is a scene when Seth is video-chatting with his brothers on the computer. They can see glimpses of Jody in the background and the entire scene was simply hilarious...so fun and funny!

At the basis of all these books is family and I really like that about them. These boys are close and although, they have all gone different directions away from their home ranch, they all remain extremely tight to each other and their parents.

A really fabulous book. I love all 4 of the Compass Brothers. They have such a great relationship between all 4 of them and it's so fun to see them each find their loves. There is a LOT of stress to come for this family and watching them pull together even more is going to be heartwrenching. Now I am just waiting for book #3, Eastern Ambitions, due out in November.

Not a bad little story. Kind of cute and sexy. I don't particularly love stories that are surrounded by misunderstandings and miscommunications and hidden agendas. Things get lost in the story and it isn't very satisfying to me personally.

Seth and Jody have always wanted each other. Jody made her interest obvious over the years and Seth always held back, thinking she was either too young or just not able to handle what he needs. By the time she feels beaten and rejected she moves on and he all of a sudden wakes up and takes notice. Having taken for granted her feelings for him for so long. He is determined to show her how he feels.

Ugh... after all the years of rejection, I just don't think I could acquiesce so easily. She put up a little bit of a fight but not much. She always loved him but all the time that had gone by with him pushing her away definitely had an effect, as it would on any of us. She was a strong female character in her personality. So its admirable that she'd fight for her cowboy. And he was ultimately deliciously sweet and sexy. The additional "family" elements in the story were a bit of an added bonus and hints towards more Compton brothers' stories. Lots more emotional ups and downs.

I really do like this author, I just wasn't terribly excited about how this story flowed together. I'll look forward to the next one..

    4.0 Stars!

Loved this story. I really like this series and the characters in it. The four Compass Brothers. This is book 2 but I read it last. It is not the hottest of the four but the romance is the sweetest. Jody has had a crush on Seth since she was 12. He has held her at arms length and promised her father to leave her alone until she finishes college. She finally comes home after college and surprise...she is engaged to be married...to Paul. Seth is determined to make her his. What's a man to do? and show her how much he loves her. Really good story and love the back story of the Compass family with what they are all dealing with. Fun, enjoyable read!

This was a nice second book. I loved how Jody stood up to Seth. I mean sure, she submitted, but she also made him submit. How sexy is that? I'm pretty sure I'm going to be crying by the end of this series. But it'll be interesting to see what's happening with each brother while we've been reading about the others. I found that interesting... many series go on a timeline... one ends, the next begins, maybe years later. But things that happened in the first book were happening in this one. I think this book went a few days to a week beyond the first one. So it'll be interesting to see what's happening with each brother and what brings each of them home.

  • adelina.

It was hot and steamy, plus I always love this kind of ''she loved him for years'' stories.

  • Malinda

This was a great story. I loved Seth and Jody, they were really great together. Seth is dominant but yet so sweet... *sigh* I want a Seth of my own! Jody is spunky and smart (sometimes smart-assed) and very forceful as her personality yet her submission to Seth (only in the bedroom and not always there...) came through as believable.

Jody has loved Seth (who works for her father) since she was 12 but he never gave her any indication he wanted her, although they were always close friends. She grew up and went to college but still made no headway with Seth when she'd come home from school. Finally, in an attempt to salvage her heart, she decides she's done with him. She even gets engaged to someone before coming home after graduating college.

Seth went to work for Jody's father at the age of 18. He loves Jody and has had to hide the fact that once Jody grew up and became a woman it was all he could do to keep his hands off her. However, her father told Seth under no uncertain terms to stay away until she graduated from college. Seth did and is waiting patiently for her to come home after graduation...his plans are hindered greatly by her new fiance. :S

Jody's father isn't too pleased about the new guy. Even though he warned Seth off until after college he apparently was rooting for him and expected Seth and Jody to end up together. Her father's favor ends up being helpful when, out of options, Seth ends up kidnapping Jody the night before her wedding. He takes her to a secluded hunting cabin to change her mind about her upcoming wedding in the most enjoyable ways!

Their time at the cabin is great but the ending made it for me. There is a mis-understanding that causes some greif but it leads in to a great ending. I love how Paul manipulates Jody in to going after Seth. . I ended the story with a smile and a warm feeling. Great story that's worth the read. I hope the next book in the series is as good. ;D

Seth Compton followed in his older brother's footsteps and left his home when turned 18. He went South to Texas where he became the foreman on a ranch. He instantly fell in love with his boss' daughter Jody but she was too young then so he gave her time to grow up. Now it's ten years later and Jody is a woman but she believes that Seth doesn't have the same feelings for her that she has for him. He's pushed her away for so long because she was younger that she believes a relationship is impossible. When she declares to her father and Seth that she's getting married Seth will do anything to show her that she's his. After they spend two amazing days together Seth is forced to leave to return home for a family emergency when Jody thinks he's left her for good she chases him to Wyoming to find out why he left her. Can Seth and Jody make it through despite all the misunderstandings to be together?

This book was sweet. I loved that Jody was a bit younger than Seth and that he waited for her to grow up so he could be with her. She's a stubborn girl thought not letting people explain or truly believing what they are saying. Seth does everything he can to prove he loves her and wants to be with her forever. I thought it was sweet that she wanted to help Paul get his inheritance money so he could open a cancer research facility. I loved that Seth's family is so close and band together when they find out about JD's illness. This is a very sweet book about love and family a great read.

  • Sarah

Oh man! If you think the length is in anyway a bad thing, think again! These two wonderfully talented ladies manage to put a lot in a short novella.

This is book two that focuses on Seth Compton, second oldest after Silas. I will admit that I liked Silas' book more for the intro to the family than for his story itself. But Seth's story is all about him!

Full of great characters (loved Paul) and an even better heroine to match Seth's personality. I really enjoyed getting to see the brothers' chat scene from Seth's POV. Hilarious!

Things move pretty quickly, but with the history that is pre-established it isn't unbelievable.

And the whole side story with the dad is just such a heartbreaking one.

I'm going to guess that Sam's story is next, but I have to admit that it's Sawyer I'm itching to read about.

I know this is piecemeal and random, but it is a great story. Seth is dominant without being a jerk, and Jody is submissive without being a doormat. Paul is funny, the family is great, and I can't wait for the next one!

  • Smut Junkie

I loved this one! Seth is one cowboy that I'd like to...oh, well, you probably don't need to know what I'd like to do with him....this is a book review after all, but let's just say I'd be more than happy to be tied to his bed! All joking aside - what a catch! And Jody - what a spunky gal! I LOVE that she has "impertinent ways and love of four-letter words"! She is smart and sassy and has a mouth that makes me proud. I am so glad that things worked out, but I'm not going to lie, I had a little heart-attack there at one point....you gotta wonder if there will be a little addition to their family in 9 months - I sure hope so!
I have a feeling that the next two books about Sam and Sawyer could be tissue-worthy - I got teary when JD got his prognosis and the boys were struggling to keep their emotions in check....but I already love this family, so hopefully lots of good will happen too!

  • Stormy

I went on a tear and read books 2-4 in a week. I think that the way the stories are woven together is genius and the non-vanilla sex was intriguing. But why is it that the dominant men seem to mellow out when they find "the one"? Why is it that they are commanding partners until they find their soulmate, then suddenly what has always driven them is "cured" and they can suddenly compromise?

I like the characters and the interweaving story lines...and I devoured these books. But I don't see myself reading them again, so...it's a solid 3 stars. Worth the wade, but won't make it to my favorites shelf.

  • Sassy Angel

This was a great book. I couldn't put it down. It had me from the first page.

Seth is the foreman at Kirkland's ranch and has wanted Jody for a long time. He knows that she needs to go to college to grow up even though it hurts to push her away. He may have pushed her too far. When she comes home from college for good, she comes with a fiance. She has promised to marry her best friend in order to help him out but this will not prevent Seth from stealing her away. Jody has wanted Seth for a long time but she is tired of being hurt. Seth steals Jody away for two days to convince her that they are meant to be together. Will they be able to work out everything?

    Highly recommend

I LOVE Mari Carr and Jayne Rylon books so when I saw they started a series together I knew it was for me. Southern Comfort was a perfect addition to Northern Exposure. The web chat scene between the brothers was priceless so I'm really glad they duplicated it from Seth's point of view. Jody is a sassy headstrong girl with a love for 4 letter cuss words. Seth is dominant and loyal. They agrue and clash but it works for them. I like the humor sprinkled throughout the book. Paul was a great friend and I was glad to see he got a good ending. I can't wait for Eastern Ambition!

  • Sarah

I loved this second book in the CB series. I love that Jody is a take charge sassy cowgirl with the love of f**k word. Seth has tried hard to ignore is feeling for the much younger Jody but when she comes home with a boyfriend it's the final straw and he starts making abducting plans. This book did make me sad but the writing and HEA is amazing.

  • Katherine

What the saying, you snooze you lose. Well Seth's out to prove it wrong. And boy does he do the best sexiest things to prove it wrong.

I loved that this book made me laugh, cry and go on a roller-coaster of emotions (including wanting to slap some individuals) a beautiful story of how sometimes we have to grab opportunity by the hand (or rope) and go with it

    Bring on book 3

  • Carisa

Because I've read excellent stories by both authors, I was surprised at how bad this story was, from start to finish -- and the heroine's erratic behavior just dotted the i.
    HERO is...not well defined.

My Review: I really like how this second book is integrated with book one, you get bits and pieces of the other books, just from Seth's perspective. While this book yet again has the poor communication wedge trope of romance novels, it has a fun way of resolving the issue. I adore Jody and her head strong and yet loyal ways, she fits in perfect with the rest of the family. I also really liked how Seth had a much softer side than you see in the other brothers of the series (at least so far). The steam is still rolling off the pages, but like in the first book they mesh well into the story and don't feel out of place at all. These books are working out to be perfect summer reads.

  • Shelley

Southern Comfort is the second of four books in The Compass Brothers series. It can be read as a standalone book but the series is interconnected about each of four brothers.

Seth is the second of the Compton brothers raised on Compass ranch in Wyoming. He sets his sites on a ranch in Texas when he is still in high school and leaves to help Thomas Kirkland on his ranch right after he graduates. His only child, Jody, is twelve and has eyes only for Seth all the years she grew up. Seth knows she is too young for him, too innocent for his sexually demanding ways and off limits per her Daddy until she finishes college. So he keep gently, then more forcefully pushing her away, even if she is his heart's desire once grown.

Jody is tired of saving herself for Seth when all he does is push her away. She has almost finished college when she was home for Christmas and he broke her heart for the last time. Now she is done with her degree, home again and she brought her fiancé with her!

Seth is determined to show Jody he is the only man for her and Jody is equally determined to marry the wrong man. Who will win this clash of wills and what extremes will they go to to prove their love?

  • lovestoread

Holy sadness! Just when you figure Silas is back on track, JD takes a bit of a turn.  Now Seth has been working another ranch and pining for the boss' daughter.  Jody comes home with a fiance in tow which throws up so much dust!  Things get spicy when Seth goes to rescue Jody from her bachelorette party and a sudden departure really makes it tough. Jody takes things into her own hands and goes to set Seth straight.

    A bit too prideful

Seth and Jody have pride in spades, it just may lead to a sadly ever after. But Seth isn't ready to give up and maybe his crazy plan just might lead them to happy ever after.
This was a good read, funny, steamy and just enjoyable.

another brother boomerangs back to the ranch
