When your 4th grader is so excited about a historical fiction book, and insists that you read it, so you look everywhere but realize it isn't at the library or even available for purchase so she has to sneak it home from school so you can read it overnight. Yeah, that happened. I am not exactly sure why she loved this book so much, but I am always happy to bond over reading. Having spend the night on a three-masted-schooner for a 5th grade field trip (loved Madison-Dixon class!!!) the book felt familiar to me. I learned a lot, and it was quite a journey from Boston to Monterey in 1845.

This is a quick read and not particularly detailed but still an engaging historical novel for approx. 8 year olds. Probably meant for kids to read to themselves as the vocabulary was not very advanced, thus not a super stimulating read aloud for parents, but still worthwhile.
