Spanning a period from the reign of Henry VIII to the Restoration, this is the third volume in a series of poetry anthologies illustrated with contemporary paintings. It includes poems by Sir Philip Sidney, Ben Jonson and Shakespeare, and the paintings have been selected from one of the great periods of European art - the Italian and Northern Renaissance. Among the artists represented are Botticelli, Titian and Caravaggio.

I was so disappointed reading the first half of this book that I put it down. The poems were hard to understand. The language was archaic and love isn't an easy subject. There's a fine collection of paintings and luckily the second half was easier, the language not as archaic and I was relieved to finish it and will keep it to read from time to time because it was a gift from dad.

Let's face it, cheap gift books are at best two star affairs. The excellence of some of the poems and the art raise this one a bit, but just a bit. The texts are taken from public domain collections and so do not reflect advanced standards of editing. The images are competently reproduced, but these paintings need and deserve better. The selection of both is a bit uneven.

Yep, when all is said and done, this is still just a gift book that makes superior toilet reading.

Nice artwork, nice thoughts...a Christmas gift from dad.
