Though neither as flashy nor as glamorous as the nunchaku, the tonfa is an essential tool in the kobudo tradition of self-defense. When wielded properly, this deceptively simple weapon becomes a graceful and poetic extension of the martial artist’s open-hand techniques. By following the detailed photos and instructions in this classic text, one can unleash the true power of this ancient weapon and training tool. Practicing with the tonfa will improve balance, coordination, and strength.

Tonfa: Karate Weapon of Self-Defense Reviews

It's extremely difficult and impractical to try to teach even the basics of a martial arts weapon to yourself and there's no substitute for an experienced instructor to give you the details and the nuances of grip, stance, strike, and movement.

However, if you look at something like this as a supplement, something to help you with terminology and key body placement when you're working on your own, you'll get a lot out of this book. This is a very visual manual, giving you only the text needed to add insight to the pictures it's filled with almost from the first page.

If you're studying the tonfa more than just swinging it around a bit, this book deserves a spot on your martial arts reference shelf.

A basic book on tonfa practice. Inside you'll find some very good drills to learn to manipulate the tonfa more easily plus some techniques to practice with an unarmed or armed partner. This is a great book to add some more interest and useful training to your in-class learning of kobudo. There are no kata shown in this book and there is a questionable history that suggests Okinawan farmers had the time to learn martial arts, which is not considered to be historically accurate by many these days.
