Review for Texas Twilight by Caroline Fyffe
    Reviewer- Lindsay Downs
With the first three, repeat THREE, words Caroline takes us on one of the most fabulous rides I’ve ever read. And the action doesn’t stop at the period either but continues to build throughout the book. This historical western is set in 1886 in the Texas Badlands and when I finished reading the last page I knew Caroline was right; these were the Badlands.
John Jake McCutcheon has finished medical school and heads for Texas. He is set to take over the practice of the retiring doctor and bring the latest with him the newest, most innovative procedures available at the time, one will even surprise you as it did me.
As with any good great western story there are plenty of bad guys and several damsels, at least one or two at some point, in distress.
As an aficionado of western cinema I was more than pleased to find this book has all the elements of some of the great movies of the past, in particular those directed by John Ford and Howard Hawks.
For anyone interested in western history I strongly recommend not only this book but all her others for she put ‘wild’ in the ‘wild west.’
Using my trusted collie grading scale I’m giving this book 4 collies, a sheltie and a collie puppy. For those who aren’t familiar with this scale that equates to 4 ¾ points out of 5.
Texas Twilight is the second in the McCutcheon Family Series.

I woke up this morning with tired, sore eyes but it was worth it! I started reading Texas Twilight after work yesterday and finished it at 2.10am! I couldn't put it down! I raced through the book, a woman obsessed - I thoroughly enjoyed John & Lily's story. I plan to sit down today and reread it at a more leisurely pace.

This was another amazing book from Caroline Fyffe. I fell in love with the characters from the first page, I felt like I was there w/them in Texas! I cried, laughed, and was scared at some parts. This was fantastically written and I hope their is a 3rd book in the McCutcheon series! I feel like I really know all the characters, like I am a part of the family! :)

Very much enjoyed this western, with some mystery and suspense. Very well developed characters, and no boring spots at all. Kept me fully engaged and was very hard to put down to get some sleep.
Nice clean read with only a couple scattered mild curses.

THE DIFFERENCES IN MONTANA AND TEXAS

The second book in the McCutcheon Family saga and what a page turner with mystery, suspense, danger, angst, fear, determination, family and friends. While this is an ongoing series or saga, it will read well as a stand-alone story. The story will include Dr. John McCutcheon, the youngest son of the Montana bunch and how he will go to Rio Wells, Texas near his Texas kinfolks. It will also have plenty of his baby sister, Charity, who will also come to Texas for a surprise visit. The story will take the reader on an adventure of life in Texas for a doctor, a school teacher, and the dangers of Comancheros.

Dr. John McCutcheon has finished medical school in Boston, and because there already being two doctors near his family in Y Knot, Montana, he will apply and be accepted for the position for the town of Rio Wells, Texas. He has been told when he arrives that he will be taking over for the retiring doctor, have a residence in the upstairs portion of the building and his medical practice downstairs. Everything is supposed to be painted, clean, and ready for his arrival.

Traveling from Boston to Texas is a long and dirty journey. The stagecoach will have three men and three women as paying passengers, plus three employees. Just before getting to their destination, they will be attacked by Comancheros, and when it is over, two men and one female passenger, plus two male guards will be dead. John will sustain a deep facial cut, and one female passenger, Harriet, will be unconscience.

The story will have John and passenger, Lily becoming friends during the arduous journey, and then she will be the one who helps sew the sixteen stitches in his face. Being a seamstress gives her an advantage for making even and neat stitches.

The plot is full of mystery that will revolve around the stagecoach murders, a missing gem, overzealous fiancé, a sister, Charity, who does her own thing, her suitor from Y-Knot, Sheriff Brandon Crawford, and the Texas McCutcheon line.

Arriving in Rio Wells will come with shock and disappointment for several people. It seems the town has misrepresented itself about the doctor’s position and building. For Harriet and Lily, the money paid for a year’s lease on the shop falls through, and trouble is brewing in town. When a mean bounty hunter shows up, things get dicey for several people. This rather quiet and quaint town will have accidents and murders that have many people on edge.

The story has the good, the bad, and the ugly of people. What happened to the man that Harriet paid for the lease of the building and what will she and Lily do for income if they can’t have the shop they leased? What will come of Charity and Theodore who instead of going to Denver, come to Texas to see John and what will her parents and Brandon think? Will John and the elderly town doctor work together and what does this mean for his future?

There is also a budding romance that is developing between John and Lily, and yet, John is technically betrothed to Emeline, and she is waiting to hear from him about moving to Texas. Just when things start to get interesting between John and Lily, Emeline shows up in Texas unannounced. He has no place that is his own, and when things became questionable in town, both Emeline and Charity will need to move to the ranch of his Uncle, Winston McCutcheon. Life has a way of working things out and learning that not everything is always black and white. Friendship will be formed; new romance will be in the works, understandings between longtime friends will be tested, tried, and found strong. The story has many intense and emotional scenes, some heartbreak, and enlightening moments.

    More action packed.

#2 in this series involves John an Lily. We also see Charity and Brandon's relationship go to the next level.

John is engaged but falls in love with Lily. They meet on a stagecoach which falls under attack.
John McCutcheon is the only sibling who got an education. He is just out of medical school. Lily and her aunt have come from Germany to start up a shop. Lily is a seamstress.

When john's fiancé leaves Boston to meet up with him he decides to break off the engagement.

The action occurs due to a jewel theft and crooked banker. We get lots of gun fights, fist fights, and surprises.

    Really good.

    THIEVES, LOVERS AND KILLERS

It's fascinating how an author can weave all three of those into a story, but that's what you have here.
We first hear about John in Luke's story, but he's away at medical school then. Now, he's on his way home...or to his new home, anyway. He's taken a position as doctor in a town in Texas, where he has family.
Lily and her aunt are on the same stage. They actually got on the same train, too, coming in from Boston, and they're going to the same town in Texas to start a dress-making shop, or at least that's what Lily thinks the plan is. There's more to it than that.
Things start going wrong before they even get to Texas, and things keep going wrong, both for John, Harriet and Lily. In the middle of it all is a stolen jewel, a doctor already in residence who's not quite ready to retire and a romance in the making with one woman...and two men. Y'reholding your breath through parts of it, wondering who's going to come out on top.
I loved the first book, and this one was good, too.

I was captivated within the first pages!! I stayed up until about 12:30 a.m. last night, because I just couldn't put the book down. When I got to the part where one of the heroines was safe, I finally went to bed. Got up this morning to finish it because then it was just icing on the cake. Good character building. Very talented author. I wish there was another book in the McCutchen series!!

  • Laura

Had everything I like.... old west sweet romance, mystery, action.... loved it!

  • Sarah Grass

    Another clean Texas story.
Fyffe's writing flows with a good balance between detail and action. A bit unusual to have so many main characters though.

  • Gayle

3.5 stars. I enjoyed this Western romance -- it's been awhile since I've read anything in that genre. A few parts felt a bit over-the-top, but it was a fun read!

  • Sherri

This was a cute story, with enough crazyness to keep you hooked!

  • Sue

Very complex storyline, multiple threads to follow as well as excellent "It takes a village" ensemble. Themes included romance, murder, cheats and a theft.

There's something about the writing, the dialogue. Very unreal and wooden to my ears, mind. Sorry no chemistry.

    Sweet love

This is a great love story full of adventure from the very beginning to the very end. The adventure is set in the wild wild west with good overcoming evil

Texas Twilight: McCutcheon Family Series Book 2 is by Caroline Fyffe. This book is the second in the series and deals with the youngest son John Jake McCutcheon and his sister Charity. It takes place in the Texas Badlands in 1866. The book is very good and is full of action which keeps you reading. Tissues are needed.
John McCutcheon has finally finished medical school and is on his way to set up practice in Rio Wells, Texas. On the way there, his stage is attacked by Comancheros and three passengers and two employees are dead. The three surviving passengers owe their lives to John and his fast thinking. Although he is a doctor and dedicated to saving lives, he was forced to kill in order to stay alive. He had the unexpected help from Lily Anthony who was traveling with her Aunt Harriet. Lily climbed up to the top of the stage and helped John shoot at the attackers. Luckily, neither she or her aunt were harmed. However, John received a knife cut across his face and Lily stitched it up for him. Lily and her aunt were crossing the Badlands to set up a sewing establishment in Rio Wells.
John and Lily both find their expectations of Rio Wells were not quite what they had in mind. John’s predecessor had not retired and moved out of his establishment and the man Lily and Harriet leased their building from had left town leaving no possible restitution for them. Both had to change their plans to fit what they found. That included love as John was engaged to a lady from the East, yet was attracted to John.
As they strive to fit into the community and create their own places, they are faced with personal decisions as well.

A strong sophomore entry for this series. John McCutcheon, the younger brother of Luke from the first book, is in Texas to start his first job as a doctor. When his stagecoach is attacked by Comancheros, he is aided by fellow passenger Lily Anthony in fighting them off. John is attracted to Lily, who has come here to start a dressmaking operation with her aunt, but he's also engaged to a young lady back in Boston.
This was very enjoyable, with lots of action. There's another branch of the McCutcheon family here, John's cousins, so I can see the series expanding with stories in Montana and Texas. John is a strong hero, kind and honorable, and Lily is a sweetheart. I worried that we were venturing into love triangle territory, but the author juggled the various relationships well to conclude with a happy ending for all.

Started out really good, but got weird and confusing towards the end. The "mystery" didn't make much sense. I guess I'm just confused. I kept trying to make things make sense, but even after it was all "explained" things don't really match up in my head. They don't even give a good reason why Lily's Aunt passed out in the stage at the beginning. (My theory was that she had narcolepsy, but apparently the author went with "old")

I'm disappointed because I really liked the first book in the series. But I bought books 1-3 together, so maybe I'll like book 3 better?

Also, I have no idea why Charity and Brandon are going to have their own book when everything was pretty much resolved during this one. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

The McCutcheon family saga moves to Texas.

When McCutcheon brother John finishes his medical traini g, he heads to Texas instead of Montana. Little does he know what fate has in store, as he meets and fights off an attack with a beautiful German girl. Meeting the Texas branch of his family and thinking life in this little Texas town will be peaceful, John is in for the surprise and adventure of his life.

A sweet romance with action and suspense

This is the second of a 10-story series, following the McCutcheon family. From beginning to end it was filled with twists and turns, a book of clean and wholesome reading sharing the trials and tribulations of the old west.

Written in good taste, it's a story I would allow my teenage daughter to read, without having to worry about inappropriate content.

Sweet, simple and clean story. No unnecessary drama and angst. No TSTL moment and I read it without stalling. I liked how the H/h communicates with each other, not hiding what their thinking or their worry. Meaning no hair pulling moments for me. Hahaha

  • Beth

Another clean western romance in the series. This was a pretty good one as well. It was a somewhat complex story line with several characters, but it was easy to keep them straight. I wasn't sold that Lily was a recent immigrant, as her "voice" sounded like all the other characters.

  • Joanne Reinhart

From the edge of your seat to sweet romance, well written and captivating.

Love this author! Each character has a story to tell. Expertly woven into a wonderful, exciting and suspense filled book.
