This has to be the best self esteem builder I have come across in a long time. I have had the most fun reading this book. Each time I picked up the book it was like visiting with my best friend.

There are many bible verses shared to uplift and inspire you. Some are so right on that they will make you roll over laughing. For instance the very first chapter the verse reads: "Like a gold ring in a pigs snout is a beautiful face on an empty head" Proverbs 11:22

Check out the titles of some of the chapters:
chapter 10. Get Your Bad Self Down (Taking a Spiritual Retreat)
chapter 12. Wassup in Your Sinkhole? (Overcoming Adversity)
chapter 22. Resuscitating Dead Possums (Kindness)
chapter 30. The Weirdness That Binds (Marriage)

Hilarious! I plan on reading this book again and again like revisiting my good friend to remind me how special and beautiful, cough!! cough!!, I am no matter what my packaging looks like. Maybe I will be so reconciled with myself that I will see the beautiful person ,reflecting God's creation, I AM, I am.

    I highly recommend this book.

    I rate this book a 5+ out of 5.

This book was nothing like I expected, in fact, it was a little dissapointing. Each chapter is short, and focuses on an inspirational message. The book tries too hard to be witty though, and somehow it doesn’t work that well if read all at once.

When I first started More Beauty, Less Beast I wasn’t sure that it was a good fit for me. Most of the jokes were about getting older, menopause, and things that I’m sure I’ll be laughing about….35+ years from now…..I stuck it through though and I’m glad I did. Deborah runs the gamut of women topics–from weight loss, to friendship, to self esteem, to forgiveness–this book goes there! Although I couldn’t apply it all, there were plenty of funny nuggets of truth I was able to pick up and take along with me! If you enjoy devotions that move to the beat of a different drum then you will thoroughly enjoy this book!

    Awesome Read

It was very inspiring down to earth real life situations that you can identify with and it leaves a sense of hope and an inspiration to want to do better and wanting to do much more.

As a woman who is quickly approaching the magical age of 40, I was quite pleased to read a book written by a woman who passed the 50-year-old mark and lived to tell about it! What makes this book even better is that the author does not hide behind the masks that so many Christian authors like to wear. Debora Coty is a real woman who enjoys fashion, chocolate, and enjoying girl talk. And yet the truth of her message is not lost.

I love the fact that this book covers every aspect of a Christian woman's life and shows these women practical ways to "make-over" that area of her life. While every suggestion offered it not easy--I don't think change is ever easy nor is it not supposed to be--they are workable suggestions and solutions. I love the various mnemonic devices she used when discussing certain areas and the witty sayings and anecdotes she sprinkled throughout the book. I also truly loved the verses she used from the Message (a Bible translation). The ones she chose really brought the messages of the Word home and were easily relate-able.

The only negative comment I have is that there was so much wisdom shared in this book that I could not get everything on the first read. There was so much to absorb that I feel I need to go back through the book at a much slower pace and actually answer the questions at the end of each chapter. I would like to try some of her suggestions, but I will have to go back through the book and mark the ones I would like to try. This would make a great "light" Bible study for ladies' groups to do together. It is completely based on the Bible and its teachings. I think any woman could glean great information from each section.

My favorite thing about the book is that Debora Coty was willing to say what most Christian women want to say but don't. It's okay to be a Christian woman and want to look nice on the outside. It is okay to wear make-up and the latest fashions. The problem comes when outer beauty becomes your sole focus. We should never elevate the position of outer beauty to a higher level than inner beauty.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated in any way, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

This book came along for me to review at a pretty good time. Since January, I've really been working hard on my appearance. Which makes it sound like I had some sort of self-confidence breakdown, although that's not exactly the case. I've always had a pretty healthy self esteem regarding my looks. I'd like to be thinner (along with pretty much the rest of everyone I know), but mostly I just want to be stronger and healthier. So anyway, I jumped at the chance to review this one, because it seemed to fit this year's theme of internal and external healthiness. It's a book of short essays or devotions relating to being the best person you can be inside and out.

    Writing

I was pleased overall with the writing. It's about on par with other women's devotionals I've read. I honestly can't really say I was blown away, but I wasn't bothered by the writing style either. It reminded me a lot of Barbara Johnson, another Christian author whose humorous but still insightful non-fiction I've enjoyed.

    Entertainment Value

I think this one would be better read as a devotional than the way I read it, which was straight through, beginning to end. I enjoyed it, but I think I would have gotten more out of it had I read each devotion on its own. That said, I think this is a book that would appeal to a variety of readers. It's intended for women, obviously, and also for Christians. Each essay is very overtly spiritual and I can't imagine that it would appeal to those who aren't already believers. While I was very pleased with the book overall, I do have to mention one small annoyance. The author continually used "Papa God" to refer to God and it drove me nuts. I mean, I know God is our Father, but that phrase just seemed too "cutesy" to me.

    Overall

I recommend it to Christian women. If my church had a library, I'd definitely include it in that collection. Cute, funny, and some good insights. Definitely worth the short time it takes to read.

Thanks to Litfuse Publicity Group for the chance to review this one!

This is one of those book that I really, really wanted to like – I mean who doesn’t want to get their life in better shape and be more Christ-like? I’m sure this book relates to some women out there and I know the author means well, however this book just didn’t resonate with me. I’m not a latest fashion kind of girl – give me a denim skirt, t-shirt, Crocs and a pony tail holder and I’m good to go, no make-up, no jewlery. Maybe the very first chapter should have been a loud bell sounding when the only thing I could related to in the quiz was feeling embarrassed by my pants (or in my case skirt) size. Even then I’m not embarrassed all the time, just when I’m in front of my family.

I don’t want to totally tear down this book as I said I’m sure it resonates with someone out there, some Christian lady who likes to be gussied up and keeps up with the fashion mags – and I guess I was expecting something different when I signed up for the tour? I did find myself chuckling at some things though as I read it, and I like a book that can bring on the humor, because after all, laughter is like a good medicine. Debora uses the Message paraphrase of the Bible which caused some truths that can only be gained through a translation to be lost and the use of Papa before God, threw me as well.

I don’t want to sound harsh, as I know authors put a lot of work into their books, but in light of my convictions and even those shared by some of my friends/readers, I have to give an honest opinion of this book. I can think of several women who this would be great for but for me, it just didn’t set well. I think the premise was great and it seems like the author did focus on what we should be doing for Christ but the items above made me feel out of the loop.

**I was provided a copy of this book through Litfuse Publicity, in exchange for my honest opinion, no other compensation was given.

"More Beauty, Less Beast: Transforming Your Inner Ogre" is a very cute, inspiring, must read, humorous book for women who find themselves struggling with emotional wounds, not feeling great about themselves and just a general reminder, that, yes, they are very amazing people, book to read.

I found myself both laughing and just enjoying a girlfriend to girlfriend camaraderie that, "More Beauty, Less Beast" provided and who hasn't woken up in the morning, look in the mirror and just felt like an "ogre" was looking back.

More than just a feel good book, "More Beauty, Less Beast" is a reminder, how beautiful we all are and how we can sometimes look in the mirror and be harder on ourselves than we really should.

Filled with scripture, personal ancedotes and insightful questions at the end of each chapter, to encourage:
    Personal reflection, or
Maybe you want to use this as a bible study with your favorite girlfriends or a women's bible study,

I really just like how "More Beauty, Less Beast" at 215 pages, is a book, you can just drop in your book to read while getting a pedicure, waiting at a doctor's office, just passing time, or needing something both funny and encouraging to read.

Debora Coty writes in a way that, she helps us see the best of any situation and just a reminder that there are some days, you've got to be able to laugh, to get through the tears and through it all, God is going to see you through the situations in your life and give the strength that is needed.

"More Beauty, Less Beast" is about strengthening, about lifting one's head up and going forward and having that faith and belief that things will get better and that like a diamond, we do have that potential.

This is a great book to have on those off days when you may think you're a beast, but reality..you are a beauty.

    Title: MORE BEAUTY LESS BEAST
    Author: Debora M. Coty
    Publisher: Barbour Books
    March 2012
    ISBN: 978-1616263478
    Genre: Inspirational/nonfiction/women’s issues

    Is your self-esteem “ soul”-ed out?

Are you tempted by the Dark Side? (Talkin’ chocolate here, girlfriend)

Maybe it’s time for a healthy dose of truth gift-wrapped in humor.

MORE BEAUTY LESS BEAST is just that. It is divided up into four sections:

    1. Outer Beauty
    2. Inner Beauty
    3. Under Garments by Fruits of the Spirit
    4. Beautifying my World

    With topics such as:

    Judging by appearance
    Keeping fit
    Body awareness
    Behavior
    Achieving goals
    Raising self-esteem
    Powerful prayer
    And more

Each chapter starts out with a verse, a relevant story, an application, an inspirational quote, and a few questions over what you read (your thoughts, experiences, opinions). This is short enough to be read in spurts, such as for a devotional, or to take along with you and keep in your desk drawer, your car, or on your dresser, if you need to find a pick-me-up related to a particular topic. Like, you just had a fight with your spouse over money and the only thing that’ll make you feel better is a major dose of chocolate, then you can reach for this book, instead of adding to your calorie intake and read one of several choices such as guilt, discernment, forgiveness, etc. to make you feel better and a little happier, more in control.

Highly recommended. Wisdom with humor. Can’t be beat. $9.99. 220 pages

There are so many expectations for women today. From looks to demeanor, women are supposed to be many different people all wrapped up in one package. How do we balance everything? Debora Coty uses her faith and wisdom to wrap up some timely advice in a humorous package. Using scripture and anecdotes, Debora helps to point out the inner and outer beauty in all of us. She is able to help show how we can become too focused to all the wrong things and ignore the most important things in our lives.

I thought there were a lot of good points in this book. While discussing our outer beauty, Debora was able to help show the balance between taking care of yourself and obsessing over it. She also spends a lot of time emphasizing forging a very personal relationship with God. Taking this time out can also be a way to decompress and de-stress ourselves. There is also a lot of emphasis on helping to build ourselves and each other up, rather than tearing down. It is so easy to focus on the negative in our lives, but the real challenge is to find the blessings instead. Don't think this book is too "preachy" though. Everything is presented in a fun and relatable way. Each chapter also ends with some questions that will make you think and relate the concepts to your life. If you are a Christian woman looking to find balance in her life, this book will help you to see where your focus is and where it should be.

With Deborah M. I've moved away from reading self-help type books, but when this one came up for review, it sounded fun. And it really is fun. I don't know that I'd even call it a self-help book, although it is focused on helping women control the destructive inner part of us that is so frustrating. I don't know of any woman who doesn't have an inner ogre as Debora Coty calls it. Whether it's fed by low self-esteem, guilt, over scheduling or simply life's trials, there is something that breaks through when we least expect it and, often, when we least want it.

Full of humorous anecdotes and personal experiences, Debora makes you laugh out loud and nod your head in understanding. I think my favorite chapter and one that is most relevant to me at the moment was her chapter on self control and the BARF technique to use when you're angry: Back off, Admit, Redirect and Forgive. Brilliant.

There was so much in this little book and it's easy to read in one or two sittings, or you can just pick it up and read a short chapter or two at a time. Debora covers nearly every subject you could think of including: Behavior, Judging by Appearance, Conquering Guilt, Kindness, Marriage and so forth. Definitely recommended.

More Beauty Less Beast is a must read! Filled with helpful advice it is a perfect gift for any woman from 18 to 80! The author, Debora Coty, writes in a very open and fun manner.

You will learn so much from reading this helpful book. The pages are filled with interesting topics like friendship between women, forgiving others, remembering to not judge the outward appearance of another and even taking the time to know yourself better.

Each topic discussed is related to learning how to accept who you are in Christ instead of comparing yourself to others. As we concentrate on Christ and put Him first, our priorities come in line with what He wants us to be.

I read through this book in one evening, as I could not wait to get to the next chapter and learn more. The authors’ sense of humor really makes this book fun to read. You will relate to many of her stories and examples. Reading this book will help you grow closer to the Lord!

I would like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for the copy of this book I enjoyed reading. I gave an honest review based on my opinion of what I read.

  • Tammy aka Bluerose

More Beauty, Less Beast is a fun, humorous devotional book! There are 34 devotionals, and I'm amazed at the HUGE lesson each one offers in the midst of such humor! They're each very short, so perfect for grabbing a lesson here and there. I read a couple of them while standing by the stove.

This is not a devotional I would recommend to everyone! I did laugh and learn throughout the pages, but there are some things to dislike about the writing style. I cringed every time the author called The Lord, "Papa God".

I did mostly like it, though, and I enjoyed a change in pace in my reading!

*Thanks to Barbour and Litfuse Publicity for my review copy in exchange for my honest opinion!

  • Jennifer Wedemeyer

I really enjoyed this book and read it in only 1 day, it was a very easy read. I laughed out loud (LOL) a lot while I was reading it and can see some writing on the wall, as they say. Everything in the book is right on track and would make an excellent discussion book for a ladies group, book club or group of friends. I can see myself referring to over and over in the future. I'm not sure why we as women seem to beat ourselves up so much and not see that what's on the inside of us is much more inportant than the outside. I give this book 4 out of 5 stars for it's humorous approach to taming the beast inside of us.

  • Dana

This is a funny and cute advice book. It is divided into 4 sections: Outer Beauty, Inner Beauty, Undergarments by Fruit of the Spirit (Not the Loom!), and Beautifying My World.
The author shares her struggles as she ages with beauty both outer and inner, dealing with other people, friendship, love and the Lord. It is funny and inspiring and an enjoyable read.
I received this book free to review from Litfuse.

We all have that inner beast inside. Sometimes she screams loudly, sometimes just a faint whisper. But she is there; ready to bark when it’s time.
