Madeline Brogan was traumatized when she was a nine-year-old. Twenty-five years later she comes "home" after an unhealthy marriage and her damaged son in tow. The only problem is she has selective memory loss and the townspeople, for the most part, have some major issues.
I wanted to enjoy this romantic suspense more but found it very hard to identify with Maddie. The sheriff, her eventual love interest, was also not the easiest character to like. The story did not flow smoothly. Honestly, there was just too much going on. By the end I really didn't care whether I learned who did what.
Ms. Bird is known for her Native American romance novels. She also wrote a number of contemporary stories but they were Harlequins and Silhouettes. As far as I know this was her only full-length romantic suspense. Perhaps her strength in modern romances lies in the shorter storyline.
If you want better-written romances with a side of suspense try FOUND WANTING by Joyce Lamb, THE WITNESS by Sandra Brown or THE PAST CAME HUNTING by Donnell Ann Bell. -
Beverly Bird wrote a great suspense-filled book that is hard to put down. Who doesn't want Maddie to remember what happened to her the day she was found covered in blood and why.
