I Heart London (I Heart, #5) Reviews
-
Clarks life is always full of complications and miraculous solutions for crazy problems. The book had some laugh-out moments, but sometimes it got a bit too much. I like Clark however, and her strange friends and family.
-
Awesome sequel to an awesome series!
I'm really not in the mood to write a review, but I'll just say that if you're a fan of I Heart books, you will love this one.
While reading:
Angela, Angela... first you say that Justin Bieber deserves to be in the same circle of Hell as Adolf Hitler, and now you want to become his official Twitter chronicler?
That's not how you do it!
Either hate or love! -

Genre: Chick Lit
Lindsey Kelk is one of my all time favorite chick lit authors and it's simply because of THIS series. Sure, I have read two of her other books outside the series and loved those too but this one gets me every time. I have actually been scrambling to read these books in anticipation for her latest novel, I Heart Forever, which just released today! So I only have one more book to go before I can dive into that one. That said, I am super excited because I simply cannot get enough of Angela and her hectic life.
In this one, Angela jets off to London with Alex and Jenny in tow for her moms sixtieth birthday party. Unfortunately, that is not all that is on the agenda. Angela needs to meet with execs in order to launch a new magazine, Jenny is still a mess from her recent heartbreak(s) and goes on a tangent, Alex is as kind as ever yet annoyingly lovely to her family (who she thinks are utterly crazy), and the rest of them? Blissfully happy to be throwing a little shindig for the happy couple (read to find out what it's for). Will things go according to plan? Probably not. But it's a fun adventure for us readers!
I Heart London is a hilarious and fun novel that will leave readers grabbing their tissues because they are laughing so hard that tears will stream down their faces. It's also a pretty lighthearted and fast paced read, so it won't take long to read through it. If your a chick lit fan, this book (and series) is a must have! Just remember, this entire series needs to be read in order as it follows the same heroine throughout.
This series is bloody brilliant -
I Heart London is the fifth installment in
Lindsey Kelk's chick-lit series titled: I Heart. The books in this series have been hit or miss with me (mostly hit though) but this one was pretty low on my personal enjoyment radar. Ms. Kelk's amazing humor seemed to be missing for the most part and in its place was unflattering bickering, jealousy, limit testing, what-if's, expectations, and this series' trademark communication issues. I did enjoy seeing more of Angela's London family, but I had it up to my eyeballs with her friends. With best friends like those, who needs enemies?
Being a loyal follower of this series, I was disappointed with the one book that held the milestone I was most looking forward to. Overall, I found this particular installment more annoying than comical much of the time but I will definitely be continuing the series. With only one more to go, I'm not going to stop now!
My favorite quote:
"People could say whatever they wanted about the price of Louboutins, but you could not argue against the fact that they made a fabulous weapon."

Rating : Could I give this a 6/5?
Angela’s back on home turf – and in her biggest romantic scrape yet…
Angela Clark has fallen in love with New York – and it’s starting to love her back.
But when she’s summoned home to England, she’s at risk of losing her shiny new life to rain, warm beer and bad memories. Talk about stepping back in time
There’s Mark, the ex-boyfriend – who she ran to New York to get away from.
There’s Louisa, her best friend, with her terrifying new baby.
And there’s her mum, still talking to her as though she’s fifteen.
Now there’s a wedding in the offing – and everyone remembers how well Angela behaved at the last one. . . Can the arrival of boyfriend Alex and best friend Jenny save her from a re-run of her old self?
Okay, first of all, I am a massive fan of Lindsey Kelk, hell, she's my twin, I love her! So, when I told her I would love to have a review copy, she happily (hopefully) obliged and agreed to send me a *SIGNED* copy when she was in the UK. True to her words, I received a lovely parcel, from HarperCollinsUK, 2 weeks later. Inside, it contained a sinfully delicious-smelling copy of I Heart London with a lovely message, "Dear Kevin, Twinsies forever. Look out for Uncle Kevin! Love Lindsey". It was a Friday and I jumped in glee, the perfect weekend present from my twinsie all across the globe.
I love the I Heart series, I have every book. Seriously, from I Heart New York all the way to I Heart Vegas and now, I Heart London. I was a bit disappointed about Angela's adventures coming to an end in the last book of the series, which is London. But it made me want to read it more, as a final goodbye to a character I love so much. It was the closest thing to what I have of my twinsie in NYC. I could tell Lindsey put a lot of herself into Angie.
I Heart London started off 6 months or so after Alex's proposal in I Heart Vegas, if you haven't read it, shoot yourself. For me, it was really easy to fall back into the story, it was like greeting old friends, everything felt so familiar. I loved how I could relate to Angela, maybe because I've been stalking Lindsey on Twitter too much or.. I've read the I Heart series more than once. Either way, it felt right for me, getting wrapped up in the series again.
Angela Clark is like a sister to me, I love her so much, I actually made pages of the I Heart books on Facebook. Okay, I've gone WAAAAY overboard, but seriously. What's not to love? She's a funny, clumsy and all-too-lovable Brit who is prone to get herself in trouble and cock things up. She's warm, very down to earth, humble and best of all, she's incredibly British. I enjoyed reading about her crazy life since New York, and right there and then, I was hooked on the I Heart series. In I Heart London, Angela goes back on her home turf, for her mother's birthday, where loads of unexpected events happened. This is Angela Clark we're talking about. And with her, there was Jenny, who was still recovering from a broken heart and lovely, handsome, Indie boyband lead singer and Angie's fiancé, Alex Reid ( I always thought he looked a bit like Penn Badgley, Dan Humphrey in Gossip Girl. Lindsey and I are GG nuts!). I liked what Angela and Alex had, the connection of two people who love each other, he stuck with her through thick and thin, since New York, he was a total sweetheart to Angie. I wonder if blokes (See? The British charm rubbed on me) like Alex really exist. And.. indeed, look out for that SPECIAL character named after me!
The flow of the book was spectacular, it was fast, upbeat. I was lost in my progress, one minute I was on page 160, then next, I was 50 pages away from the epilogue. I was utterly absorbed into the story, well, that's the magic of Lindsey Kelk, her books make you turn pages faster than you eyes can finish reading them! As usual, there were loads of hiccups all the way, from page one to page three hundred and sixty. I whizzed past the pages, though school was an utter *female dog*, I tried to read it, but most of the time, failing. So, in the end, I managed to finish this lovely slice of chick lit in less than a week. Argh. Bad progress, much to my dislike. There were loads of twists and unexpected surprises in the book, well mostly good ones. I'm so not giving any spoilers away, Lindsey will skin me alive. Okay, the thing is, it was addictive, sharp, witty and downright hilarious. If I were to be given a chance to praise the book, those are the words I'll opt for.
I guess loyal readers of the I Heart series will enjoy the last book as much as I did. It's not like everyday you're saying goodbye to your fictional/non-existent sister, so it's a first for me. I'll always read these beautifully written books again. I think I Heart London is in fact the perfect set-off, the last kiss, the last goodbye to Angela for readers. I couldn't bear bidding her farewell. Okay, I sound like some sad, dismal cow. I should wrap it up! I loved the I Heart series, I loved the beautiful bond Angela has formed with her readers, I loved the heartbreakingly beautiful covers. The laughs, the tears, the smiles, the smirks, the warm feeling after finishing every book. Angela will always have a place in my heart. I Heart Angela. -
This series started off with a BANG ! .....Then it just went downhill.
The 5 books basically told exactly the same story . I even skipped I heart Las Vegas, because it was that predictable, and what do you know ? Nothing changed .
The characters for me had very little depth and I couldn't connect with them or see how they could feel such a close tie towards each other.
Angela.
The main character which these books are based around, started off being this woman who wasn't superficial with a pretty good head on her shoulders. I loved how at the start she didn't stick around or try and win her scumbag of an ex back. This showed me she had guts and common sense , I love that in a woman, I was thinking what could possibly go wrong with this book......Well I spoke to soon. Because apparently these great qualities are left back in the UK.
All of a sudden Angela is Marc Jacobs this..... Tiffany's that .... Blah Blah Blah Blah. Her dialogue was more in depth about what she wears, then what Alex actually looked like. I disconnected with her pretty fast, I can put some of her stupidity down to naivety if she was in her early twenties, but come on !!!! Pretty sure when your thirty something and apparently smart , this type of crap never happens. Oh and well I'm on this point, it seemed Angela may have had bulimia, the girl ( and yes I use this word to describe her not woman) would get her self plastered and just vomit consistently at least twice in every book . The most pathetic thing that really ticked me off is how everyone thought her stupid flighty tendencies were ok or cute. Arggghhhh I have to stop writing about her .
Alex
well he was plain. Honestly nothing about his character actually stood out besides he loved Angela and music. That was how boring he was.
Jenny and Louisa
Can't stand both of them . What crap friends this girl has made.
I don't actually understand how Louisa and Angie are still friends? I don't care how long the have known each other, the bitch knew her fiancé was cheating and didn't even bother telling her apparent Best friend. That would of been a friendship breaker straight away for me .
Here is a quick dialogue of would of happened if Louisa and I where friends
Me: Did you know Mark was cheating on me with that bitch you guys play doubles with. ?
Louisa : I'm so sorry ( sobbing ) I thought you knew ?
Me: you've got to be kidding me ? Seriously do you think I'm that pathetic I would stay with a cheater and allow it to continue
Louisa : ahh ahh ahh
Me : Did you even say anything to him maybe a " Mark you bastard I know what's going on . You tell her or I will" or slap him at least ?
Louisa : shakes her head still sobbing
Me: this friendship is over . If you were in my position I would of had your back, clawed his eyes out, done something at least. Your a shit friend and I don't need you in my life go play doubles with them.
Tim ( Louisa partner try to intervene)
Me : shut up Tim your just as useless .... Prick
The end
And Jenny Lopez the self absord wench ... I would of dropped her the second her dramas started filtering into my life.
This series had a very poor plot and character base. -
Going back to a place you've left behind can be hard for anyone. Throw in a terrifying baby of your friend, an ex who cheated on you and a mother treating you like a toddler. Thankfully Angela has her new american friend Jenny and Husband to be Alex coming along to England just after her. The relationships between all the characters in this book are all very well written and pieced together. I enjoyed the gig in London were Alex is Angela's knight in shining amour when she injures herself. There first planned wedding in her mother's back garden does not go to plan at all Jenny on a meltdown, her mum thinking they are getting married because she thinks Angela is pregnant and an ex with a broken hand. I so wanted Alex and Angela to get married quickly however i was pleased they waited until they flew back to New York in a much nicer environment.
-
Niet zo leuk als de eerdere delen maar nog steeds vermakelijk. Angela gaat trouwen! Het zou de i heart reeks niet zijn als dit allemaal vlekkeloos zou verlopen. (:
-
Home is where the heart is. Right? Angela Clark might love her life as a Brit in New York, but now she has no choice but to return to London. Not only does she leave behind her gorgeous boyfriend Alex -- she must also face unfinished business back on home turf. There's the ex-boyfriend -- who she moved to New York to get away from.
First off, I didn't realize this was a series before I read it. I thought that was going to ruin it for me however, Lindsey Kelk did a great job of explaining things. It did make me want to read the whole series so I'm excited to start from the beginning and learn about Angela Clark. -
This one was better than the last two that I listened to. I felt like Angela was a bit less dramatic, and it was nice to not only have her drama revolve around her relationship.
-
So far, this one might be my favourite! It's the stuff that little girls dream about! It's so romantic and nostalgic. Ahem, pickled onion Monster Munch anyone? Who doesn't think of high school and spending 10p in your local corner shop on your way home from school?
As someone who lives abroad, and has never returned home; this book made me connect with Angela's old best friend in the book. We get to know Louisa a little bit more and I loved the scene where they get together, sitting in her bedroom like they used to when they were 16 years old!
It reminded me of my old best friends. I remember her dad calling up to us from the bottom of the stairs, and my friend shouting back. And at random we recently got back in touch after years of not speaking. She, like me, doesn't have any babies yet, but our other friend in our trio, just had her third baby!
The thought of my skinny little friend having babies is completely bonkers to me. It's so weird as it feels like it was just yesterday since I saw her last. And there she is, standing in her PJ's next to her xmas tree, old boyfriend, or should I say now husband; and her two twin boys, along with her big pregnant swollen belly. It just reminds me of the photo we took when we were young, where we stuffed a pillow up our shirts, pretending to be fat and preggars. Back then we didn't have Facebook, so I don't have a lot of photos from the past, but luckily I still have my memory.
I remember how we used to talk about being each other's bridesmaids! So this story really gave me something that I didn't have. It never even occurred to me that there would be a fight over the maid of honour position, but it makes sense. I remember when another friend had chosen someone else to be their maid of honour, but I was too busy to care too much. However, if it had happened within my trio of besties, it would most certainly be a problem. No English etiquette there!
I sometimes wondered what it would've been like with a quick wedding before we left the UK for a new life. A part of me is saying that I would've been happy with the cheese and pickled onion on a stick, scenario! And another part of me is thankful for not spending money I didn't have, as money still feels too tight nine years later. It's bizarre saying that number out loud! I mean, I can still remember me working in London, like it had just happened last week.
If a book reminds me of a film to watch, I like to add that to my book reviews, so you can get a sense and feel for the general vibe. The film, "The Wedding Planner" with Jennifer Lopez came to mind. This Lopez does not appear as feisty as the Jenny Lopez that we all love, but in this book, she is not her usual self. After re-watching the movie, I felt it wasn't a great film, so I would have to add, "Bride Wars" and "27 dresses" to this list.
I absolutely love Lindsey Kelk! And I would recommend her to everyone. I can't believe I never heard of her up until recently, but she is seriously amazeballs! So thank you for the recommendation!
Ps. This review was meant to be as long as a long sentence.. But obviously I really liked it and couldn't help myself! -
Of course I liked this book because I have loved the series.
But it wasn't my favorite book out of the whole "I Heart" series. I think my favorites are NewYork, Vegas, and Paris.
Anyway, moving on...
What I liked:
- Angela's quirky personality shines through
- Alex is adorable. I love how much in love with her he is. Seriously, who wouldn't want their boyfriend to write love songs about you? And say in public that you were the ONE? SIGH**
- Things work out very well for Ms. Clark. I won't give away major details to those who haven't read it yet, but it has a warm, fuzzy feel good ending. As all good chicklit novels should :)
- Angela's parents are hilarious! We didn't get to know them very well in the previous books (save for a space cake or two, and some awkward phone calls).
- Describing all the cool things to see in London. Its given me an excuse to google hobnobs (whatever those are :S ), Harvey Nicolls, among other things.
- The cat fights and tension between Louisa and Jenny. That was so real and palpable! Probably the best part of the book! Of course they'd fight, they're soooo different.
What I didn't like:
- Angela drinks. A LOT. I don't mind downing an occasional bottle of wine with girlfriends, but how many times does one have to get completely hammered and spend the morning wrapped around a toilet before they learn?!?!?
- I noticed several grammatical and editing errors throughout the book. Ex. doing used instead of going. Small errors like that, which threw me off and I had to re-read parts to figure out what was being said.
- Jenny is a total pain in the ass. I'm with Alex on this one, she brings most of her troubles onto herself, and is a bossy control freak. In the first 4 books, Jenny was a fun, take charge sort of person that could get things done. This time, she takes it to a whole other level where she is mouthy and rude. I didn't like her one bit.
- Someone should take high heeled Louboutins away from Angela. Smashing a guy's hand with a spike heel is only funny once. I wasn't amused the second time she did it. Although, I've gotta say he had it coming.
Even though this wasn't my favorite of the I Heart series, it was still very enjoyable. I hope Ms. Kelk continues to write about Angela's adventures!
Cities to suggest:
Milan and Tokyo. -
I'm happy to announce that Angela's fifth adventure started off very well.
Maybe it was a good sign that this time it's not Angela digging herself deeper into whatever-hole-of-mess. Instead, Jenny is down there after a break up. In a totally non-exaggerating way, of course. I mean, six months of crying, alcohol and rebound shagging sounds pretty reasonable to me.
So anyway, Angela finally returns home to England to attend her mother's birthday party and officially introduce her fiancé Alex. They are also accompanied by Jenny to get some distance from her currently shitty life in New York.
I constantly feared that the story would turn into awkward-mode like the previous parts, but that didn't happen. Amazing! Instead, it was really fun to read. Yes, Angela did of course 'accidentally' invite her ex to the party. And sure, at some point she decided to get drunk and therefore cause stupid things to happen. But after all, she has to fulfill some sort of quota, I guess. And such incidents didn't get out of hand, so that was ok.
I also really enjoyed the obligatory dramatic peak. I didn't expect it to be this way, but it was really well done and solved. The same applies to the ending in general. Very well done. -
In the fifth part of the series Angela comes back to England for her mother's birthday. Of course she takes her fiancé Alex with her to finally let him meet her family, and even her American best friend Jenny tags along.
Also, a wedding is due all of a sudden and it takes a lot to plan it at such short notice. Especially with two best friends who seem to be hating each other passionately.
And then there's this big work presentation in London, which is to decide about Angela's future in New York.
So once again, her life is being turned upside down and she falls from one disaster to the next...
I liked it a lot more than the fourth part, that's for sure. I actually didn't really expect that it was all about a wedding and the planning of said wedding and everything (even if that should've been obvious to me, I guess). So that was quite a nice 'surprise'!
Angela's one best friend Jenny didn't entirely make up for the stupid shit she did in part four throughout the book, although it got a lot better towards the end.
The ending itself was really lovely and a very nice conclusion to this whole series! ❤ -
Fergie – London Bridge -
Reread: August 2023 - still one of my favs in the series <3
*4.5*
Can't believe I've nearly finished this series. But I follow Lindsey Kelk on Twitter and she is writing another I Heart book and I can't wait to see where these characters go. I've grown to love them all so much. This is just a great feel good series and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves light, fluffy contemporary reads. -
I must admit, after the past couple of books in the I Heart series I was worried about what this one would be like. I didn’t get on with Angela in Paris of Vegas so was pleasantly surprised that this Angela was the one that I loved in New York and Hollywood.
The last installment found Angela and Alex getting engaged so, of course, the talk of a wedding was the central focus of the novel - more so than what Angela would have actually wanted! The book starts with Angela trying to make her and Delia’s venture work out and suddenly being demanded to return to England by her mum (who she may of accidentally forgot to mention her engagement to). Straight away you know this is going to be a great part in the series, since Angela has moved to New York you also want to see more of her life in England and her family. Being away for two years and unsure if she could handle being in her parents presences for more than ten minutes, it was a very daunting idea for Angela to return. However with Alex and Jenny by her side it was going to be much different from what she anticipated!
It was very interesting to see these characters in England, where Miss Clark grew up and where she wanted to escape from two years ago after her best friend’s wedding. I loved seeing how Alex and Jenny got on with her parents and best friend Louisa (now more of a mother than maid of honour). I’m surprised that Jenny got on with Angela’s mum as much as she did! Adding Jenny to any mix is always an interesting dynamic even if she doesn’t always get on everyone’s good side. They’re not the only characters from the series that recur, due to a shock decision brought up by Annette many of our favourite American’s also come to London (which also sees an interesting couple emerge).
If you have followed the series since the first book you know how many potential problems there are for Angela on returning to London. I couldn’t wait to see how they would all pan out and what would happen for her. On top of wedding planning she also has to give a presentation which would decide the fate of Gloss magazine, when she was giving the presentation I was nervous for her (and to feel that is a sign of great writing) however by the end of that chapter I couldn’t stop laughing!
Despite all the twists, turns and how angry Jenny can make people at times you’re still able to laugh through it! Kelk manages to make any situation presented in the book funny, even if it is just one line of Angela’s thoughts on the matter. That’s what you can always be sure of with this series, you will be made to laugh at some point during the book! I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it made sticking with the last two books worthwhile for me! I do hope that there is at least one more as there’s still one adventure I still want to see Angela on! However if there isn’t this was a lovely heart-warming way to end. -
I am a huge fan of Lindsey Kelk and I have loved every one of her books. I have eagerly been waiting to read her newest release I Heart London but with so many books lined up to review it was taking a back seat. After reading Fifty Shades of Grey I was eager to get back to my chick lit and so I decided to go down town and pick up my copy of I Heart London which was easily recognised on the shelf by its fantastic cover.
Angela and Jenny are back with a bang. After a phone call from Angela’s mum demanding she returns to London with Alex for her birthday Angela has no choice but to return to London but lucky for us she has Jenny in toe! Angela finds it very unsettling being back in her home town she has changed so much through the previous four books that she no longer sees London as home. It’s not long before her meddling mother is pushing Angela into something that she is not quite sure she wants to be doing and rather than have the constant reassurance and support from her two best friends Louisa and Jenny they seem more intent on competing between them for Angela’s friendship. We never know how things will pan out for poor Angela in her rollercoaster life, will she stay or will she flee!
As ever Lindsey Kelks writing style flows so effortlessly that I found myself falling easily into the storyline and before I knew it I had finished in under a day. This was pure entertainment on every page. I found the confrontation between both Jenny and Louisa both frustrating and entertaining at the same time as they were fighting to be Angela’s number one! With this book being set in London it had a very familiar and comfortable feel to it especially when places of interest that I have been to were featured. Alex and Angela’s relationship seems to be running a lot more smoothly in this book and I found I warmed to Alex more in this book. We also finally managed to find out more about Angela’s best friend Louisa who is mentioned in the previous books but now I really feel like I know her character better.
I found this book very unpredictable which just added to the endless amount of positives for this book even down to the ending I still wasn’t sure which way things were going to pan out. I really think that the author has created two of the best characters in chick lit in Angela and Jenny whatever these women get up to just have us hooked and gripping our sides!
If you have read the previous I Heart books then you will love this one it is one of my favourites..... hell they are all my favourites! For those of you who have yet to read one of the I Heart books you need to pick these books up they are great entertaining reads which have you eagerly awaiting the release of the next book. I can only wonder where Angela’s adventures will take her next! -
What a great series!!
I wish I could personally thank Lindsey Kelk for the every single word she wrote! I had awesome literary nights full of laughter, giggles, grunting even roaring. Could only be a sign of how well she writers her stories.
Each book has given us an amazing adventure to go along with and this one was no different. Returning to London is great, we get to know more about Angie's life before the actual run-away (or should I say fly-away) to New York City. She's back in her 'normal' environment with her crazy parents, bestie since forever, and old demon ex Mark.
It may not be in Angela's character to handle things with flair but at least she handles every obstacle with balls of fire! -
I really enjoyed this book even if some of the charcter's actions grated on my nerves sometimes. I'm a fan of Angela and her adventures especially when in need of something easy to read. This edition didn't disappoint. I'm off to read I Heart Christmas - afterall it's the season... :)

Salve lettrici,

*******MILD SPOILERS******
Gah! I loved this book so much! I was so not expecting the whole wedding situation. I was scared for them but it turned out pretty good. I've always considered Lindsey Kelk books LOL funny but in this one I LOL when the wedding cake arrived. So so good.
And don't even get me started on a bitch I wouldn't spoil the name but you must have already have a clue about who am I talking about.
By the way, Acute representation of how to survive a last minute /(week) wedding shenanigans throughout this book (I mean in a good way of course)
Looking forward to the next Angela adventure. -

Selfishness runs riot in this lackluster installment of one of my favourite series.
‘Ohh dear’ is pretty much the phrase I would use to sum up this book, perhaps with an ‘exasperated’ or ‘deflated’ on the side. Seriously, Lindsey Kelk, what the heck happened with this book? Over the past year the I Heart series has become my go-to for when I’m in the mood for something lightweight, fun and romantic that is farfetched but in the best possible way.
Unfortunately, this installment didn’t deliver on any of the above, and instead left me fuming and disappointed.
It seems Lindsey Kelk is one of those authors that when she gets it right, she gets it marvelously right, but when she gets it wrong… oh man, she nose dives, crashes and burns. Like Kelk’s previous novels her writing in I Heart London is basic, and she spends more time describing shoes and Marc Jacob’s bags than she does adding to character depth and forming an intriguing plot – but that’s okay. This genre doesn’t rely on these things as much as others do and are not vital to making a book like this work. What is vital however, is the ability provide some laugh out loud moments and witty observations about everyday life, the ability to make the reader swoon at the romantic interest, and most importantly, you have to be able to get behind the main character and root for them to succeed. These are things that Kelk usually showcases so well but were completely lacking in I Heart London. I think I laughed maybe once, I definitely didn’t feel chemistry with the romance despite Angela and Alex being on of my FAVOURITE drool worthy fictional couples, and I’m pretty sure I wanted to slap the main character within the first three pages and the urge did not distill after I closed the cover… or even 3 hours after I had finished the damn thing!
This book just hit all the wrong notes for me, which I was shocked by because I was looking forward to this installment the most. I thought Angela returning home would be a really interesting and action-packed installment where she would have to confront all the fears and realities she ran away from, but most of this is sidestepped in favour of *drum roll*… Wedding planning.
Yepp. This book basically felt like an unentertaining episode of Don’t Tell the Bride, but instead of the groom planning the wedding it was Angela’s turbulent friend, Jenny. This entire book pretty much consisted of the characters sitting around arguing about planning Angela’s trip down the aisle and making lots of phone calls. It wasn’t even about the interesting aspects of planning a wedding! The novel had no point of conflict apart from Angela’s two best friends bickering (which Angela could have prevented if she’d stopped to reassure her friends they weren’t being replaced for like 2 seconds) and Angela seeing her ex. The plot was non-existent.
My irritations about the lack of plot were only irked further by Angela’s constant moaning. She somehow manages to complain and whine her way through the entire story despite the fact that she has created a dream life where she lives in one of the most amazing cities in the world (New York), has the job she has always wanted doing what she loves and is about to get promoted, AND is about to get married to a gorgeous rockstar. It made me want to punch something.
It’s safe to say I didn’t enjoy Angela’s character development in this one, she makes the same mistakes she has in all the previous novels showing she clearly hasn’t learnt anything. She spends the whole novel wondering why her friend Jenny is so upset when it is blatantly obvious. She let’s her new best friend, Jenny say horrendous things to her UK best friend, Louisa that are totally unacceptable and doesn’t defend her or do anything about it, which is shocking as they’ve been friends since school whereas she’s only known Jenny two years (come to think of it, a lot of my dislike of this novel comes from how horrifically Angela treats her two best friends and everyone else around her). Jenny is almost as awful, lashing out at others because she’s heartbroken, while Louisa is equally unpleasant as the jealous friend (although for good reason). Meanwhile, Alex was still his same, charming self, but I don’t feel like he was given enough of a storyline.
Overall, it’s safe to say I did not enjoy I Heart London, with Angela acting like a spoilt brat and the basically non-existent plot which spent the whole novel building up to something which turned out to be unsatisfying, this book was a big miss for me, and even though I tried REALLY hard to find something I liked about it I couldn’t, which is why this book is getting 1 star. -
After listening to so many of my friends rave about Lindsey Kelk's I Heart Series for months, I finally decided to give it a shot. I have to say that from I Heart New York, right up until I Hear Vegas, I wanted to kiss everyone who recommended this series to me - I loved it!
With each book, I was worried that it wouldn't be as good as the previous one in the series but somehow, Kelk has managed to keep the magic through it all, if not make it better.
So, I'm not exaggerating when I say that when I received this ARC, I literally jumped, skipped and hopped in joy! I wanted it that bad. I Heart London is the fifth book in the I Heart series and if you've followed it so far, you know that Angela is finally engaged to Alex and now it's time for her to face everything she has left behind since two years ago, when she first took off to New York... and she's dreading it.
Now, where do I begin? I Heart London is just as funny as Kelk's previous books but I have to say that I'm disappointed. By that, I don't mean that I didn't like it because I did. However, it just didn't match up to the rest of the books.
What I've loved about these books is that although Angela, our protagonist, is a funny, lovable girl with who frequently finds herself in embarrassing situations with herhighly entertaining best friend, that wasn't all these books were about. It's not just fluff with this series.
In all of Kelk's books, there's always this heart-fluttering moment at the end that makes me cry sappy tears or leaves me smiling to myself. Mostly, those moments involve Alex and Angela.
You know how with most chick lits, there's no real story to it and they have just the humor and romance going for them? In the I Heart books, the romance is deeper than that.
However, I didn't feel like I Heart London was Lindsey Kelk's best work, despite the existence of her usual comedy (which I really enjoyed). There were too many questions left unanswered and most of the story was just about the stress of an 'impulsive' wedding. See, I had nothing against that for the plot but throughout the whole novel, I was waiting for that moment of clarity that Angela and Alex share in all the novels at the end that makes it all perfect. Yeah, it didn't happen with this one. Alex was barely around in I Heart London and if that wasn't bad enough, I still don't know where they stand on the babies thing.
Don't get me wrong, there were still those moments - the swoony ones - like every time Alex was with Grace, ALL I wanted to do was bed him, wed him and be the mother of his children, and I'm just 22. *Sigh*, he's that perfect. Too bad he's not real.
Like I said, I Heart London, while still funny, could've been much better. I enjoyed the usual Jenny madness, Alex being on his best behavior around Angela's parents and Angela trying really hard not to go crazy. I just wish it was more. I guess I could always hope that there'd be another book! -
***** CONTAINS SPOILERS *****
We left Angela and Alex happily engaged in the previous book I Heart Vegas, so as expected this book is focusing on the big wedding day, of course were talking Angela here so nothing runs smoothly !! Angela is heading home for her mums birthday and a big career changing presentation for her new business venture Gloss magazine.
While here in London with Alex and Jenny in toe the drama of planning a wedding continues to unfold with some predictable but funny consequences. I love how Louisa fitted into the Jenny Angela mix and loved the writing of Angela's mum and dad.
I have been a big fan of the I Heart Series since reading I Heart New York, and while I Heart London didn't disappoint me, I felt a little sad reading it. This may be because its the last in the series and its like saying a long goodbye to an old friend but also because it felt like it left unfinished business. Some of the old faithful characters James, Craig, Erin and Sadie made very brief appearances and stayed in the back ground, like an extra in a soap opera. The other thing missing for me was a sexy love scene between Angela and Alex. (sorry if it makes me sound like a pervert) In the previous books there has always been a steamy bedroom scene which is very much lacking here. To me these have always been the demonstration of the passion and love that connects Alex and Angela and yes they were hot too !! The book just left me wanting more which I suppose is in one way the sign of a good writer but from the readers point of view bloody annoying when you know it the last in the series. It left me wondering will Angela and Alex adjust to married life? Will they start a family (Angela and a baby would be hilarious)? How will the magazine work out? Will Jenny ever get over her ex ? to name but a few !!
Lindsey Kelk has done a fantastic job bringing these characters to life and I will really miss new adventures from them but the I Heart series are books that I will go back to over time an re read, and there's not many books I say that about !!
I would maybe beg Lindsey to reconsider finishing the series and suggest "I Heart Babies" as a title :O)x -
The eagerly anticipated return of a much loved character is always a tricky one. The reader knows the character well therefore there is a chance that the author won’t do the character justice and let the reader down. This was NOT the case with I Heart London. Lindsey Kelk did Angela Clark proud.
Opening this book was like slipping on your favourite pair of fabulous jeans, familiar and yet you knew it was going to be good. The book begins in New York and then quickly changes setting to Surrey/London where most of the story takes place. I was worried that because the story was taking place in London, we wouldn’t have some of the other much-loved characters included, but they are all there and we get to hear more from best-friend Louisa which was a welcome edition to this, sequel number four to I Heart New York.
Angela gets herself into the usual scrapes and capers only this time she has to face up to her parents as well as Jenny Lopez and now Fiancée Alex. The fact that there is not an engagement to contend with adds a new dimension to this story, and I’m sure readers who have not followed Angela from the start but who can sympathise with the engaged or recently married will love this story because of this extra dimension.
As in I heart New York there were some great references to British brands and British icons which seems to make the book even more apt at having been released during the Queens Diamond Jubilee. Even if you are brand new to Lindsey Kelk and Angela Clark you will love this book for its fun characters, relatable storyline and parent/grown-up child dilemmas. I heart Lindsey Kelk. I heart Angela Clark. I heart I Heart London. Oh and ‘That’ll do pig’!
