  J'attendais quelque chose de différent; je ne sais pas, le livre est comme un songe, avec un mélange de réalité, rêve, imagination, peurs, espoirs... mais je n'ai pas réussi à trouver un axe argumentaire. À vrai dire, auteur gay, exilé, j'imaginais un autre livre.
  Pas mal mais pas fameux non plus.

  Review : De Marokkaanse auteur Abdellah Taia (1973) publiceerde eerder romans en verhalen waarin homoseksualiteit, identiteit, liefde en eenzaamheid een grote rol spelen en wordt daarom als een positief rolmodel door Marokkaanse homoseksuelen beschouwd. Hij woont in Parijs, is actief in de internationale filmwereld, maar is regelmatig te gast in Marokkaanse televisiestudios wanneer het thema homoseksualiteit aan bod komt. In Hartsvrienden gaat het om de liefde tussen twee vrienden, de liefde voor de koning van Marokko en de liefde van een vader voor zijn weggelopen vrouw. Deze verhaallijnen komen samen in een als verraad ervaren keuze van de ene vriend, die leidt tot jaloezie en wraak bij de andere. Omar en Khalid zijn hartsvrienden en de jongens zitten bij elkaar in de klas, maar ze komen uit verschillende werelden: Omar woont in het arme gedeelte van Salé, Khalid in een villa boven op de heuvel waar de rijken wonen. Omar is kind aan huis in de villa. Hij houdt van de geuren van de zwarte koffie, de muntthee, de suiker, de jam en de honing, de zoete broodjes. Zonder kloppen gaat hij in de vroege ochtend Khalids kamer binnen en kruipt bij hem in bed. Het leven van Omar verandert als zijn moeder het gezin verlaat en zijn vader zich wanhopig van verdriet wendt tot de tovenaar Bouhaydoura. De tovenaar vertelt Omar over de rituelen die hij uit moet voeren om zijn moeder weer terug te krijgen. Maar Omar is niet zozeer van slag door het verdwijnen van zijn moeder, maar door het verraad van zijn vriend Khalid. Deze is namelijk als een van de beste leerlingen van de school uitverkozen om de hand van de koning te kussen als deze op bezoek komt, maar heeft hem daar niets over verteld. Buiten zichzelf van verdriet en boze jaloezie besluit Omar de rituelen in te zetten om zijn vriend terug te winnen - Het geheel speelt zich af in een soms realistische, dan weer droom- of sprookjesachtige setting, Taïa weet bij ieder hoofdstuk opnieuw te verrassen en de lezer in soms poëtische, soms directe bewoordingen mee te slepen. Hartsvrienden is een coming-of-age boek vol magie, bijgeloof, verlangen en jaloezie van de een van de belangrijkste jonge schrijvers uit de hedendaagse Marokkaanse literatuur. Voor Hartsvrienden ontving hij in 2010 de Prix de Flore (vernoemd naar het beroemde Parijse café), een prijs voor jong en veelbelovend schrijftalent.

  Published in 2010 to many an accolade, ‘Le Jour du Roi’ (The Day of the King) won Abdellah Taïa the prestigious French Prix de Flore while seeing him return to recurring themes of rejection, poverty and homosexuality in late 1980s Morocco. The novel itself is set in 1987, in a small town between Rabat and Salé (where Taïa hails from), and centres on two friends of opposing socio-economic backgrounds on the day the King of Morocco, then monarch Hassan II, pays their school a visit. As always, the prose is deeply poetic and as the story unfolds, the fairy-tale motifs and illusory images create an atmosphere unique to Taïa’s novels. However, it is also this oppressively elegiac atmosphere that tends to dilute the thinly veiled critique of the black years of Hassan II’s reign, and rendering this initially promising novel not as accomplished a work of fiction as precious and subsequent novels.

  This one of those book I'm not quite sure how to rate, nor what to say about it. The writing is stunning, it's truly a book that manages to tell an emotionally tense story mainly through a changing, shifting atmosphere. I'm especially captivated by the narrative use of dream sequences, how they blend more and more into reality as the story goes on. Definitely a book I recommend, the writing style might not be for everyone but it definitely is for me. Packed with emotions and left me feeling a lot (that I'm not quite sure how to name) as I finished it.

  Je suis perplexe quant à cette lecture. Incapable de dire si je l'ai appréciée ou non. Le roman se veut de traiter la lutte des classes socialez, l'amour, la prostitution, l'esclavage, la sorcellerie, homosexualité, abandon... Mais sans jamais approfondir. On s'y perd parfois. Le récit n'est pas forcément très intéressant, et les personnages pas du tout attachants. Le contenu est très différent de ma première impression. Je suis assez déçue au final.

  An den Stil musste ich mich erst etwas gewöhnen: sehr kurze Sätze, häufige Wiederholungen. Wenn man sich jedoch darauf einlässt, ein sehr lesenswertes Buch. Das letzte Kapitel allerdings finde ich überflüssig.

Taia ci piace. è viscerale, emotivo, trascinante, forte, a tratti persino visionario. la storia di due amici. l'alternanza delle azioni e della finzione, dei sogni e della realtà. spot a intermittenza. una scrittura personale, quasi biografica a tratti, diaristica.
  un buon romanzo, senza neanche una storia precisa ma con parole di forte evocazione ed emozioni potenti.
  la gelosia, l'amicizia, il rimorso, il senso di colpa, l'amore, la rabbia.

  The king of Morocco will pass by Salè, and will have a high impact on Omar and his rich friend Khalid.
  A short book made of short sentences, a dreamlike narration and a great intensity of feelings. Captivating writing, highly effective. The strong friendship with gay connotations sounds natural, but the sense of jelousy that leads to the tragic ending is maybe excessive.
  The last chapter is more of a separate short story or appendix than the ending of the book.

  L'écrivain Abdelah Taia ne sort pas du cercle de ses confrères francophones, et évoque dans son roman Le jour de roi la façade obscure d'un pays qui n'est autre que le sien le 'Maroc'; avec ses problèmes, et ses instabilités socio-culturelles 'la pauvreté, le charlatalisme, la sorcellerie,la prostitution feminine ..." et la liste reste inachevée ...

  I'm having a tough time rating and reviewing this book. Finishing it was like waking up from a dream. Reality and magic mix together in this book about youth, poverty, class war, faith, abandonment, monarchy... It left me empty.
