Lady Alixe, more happy in the library than the ballroom, is most definitely left-on-the-shelf material. He'll never walk away from a wager, but Merrick's expertise extends way beyond society etiquette. Never before entrusted with a woman's modesty, Merrick sets about teaching her everything he knows.
How to Disgrace a Lady (The Rakes Beyond Redemption #1) Reviews

Un 3'5 en realidad. He disfrutado mucho, mucho, con ésta lectura.
Fun book. Merrick was at the house party to escape some of his more scandalous behavior. Then he was caught with Alixe, thought it wasn't quite compromising enough to force marriage. Alixe's father required that Merrick simply pay enough attention to her to make her more interesting to more suitable men. Alixe has purposely made herself unappealing. She is much happier doing her historical research and translating and has no interest in being some man's trophy. She isn't happy about her father's decree, but has to go along with it. As they spend time together, Merrick finds that he's enjoying his time with Alixe, and she finds that life outside the library can be pretty interesting. I ended up really liking both Merrick and Alixe. Merrick starts out showing his irresponsibility and rakish tendency. When he first encounters Alixe, he is naked from swimming in a pond. He is intrigued by her lack of squeamishness, and continues his flirtation later when he meets her again. I loved the way that Merrick starts to forget his rake persona when he talks to her about her studies and gets involved in what she is doing. He is still determined to help her find the "right" husband, since he feels he would never be suitable. I really enjoyed the way he got her to wear different clothes, and the way she got her revenge. As the time goes on it becomes obvious that he is falling for her, though he doesn't want to admit it. Alixe is pretty smart in the way she has tried to arrange her life. She knows what she does and doesn't want and isn't afraid to go after it. She has purposely dressed and acted in a way to discourage suitors. She enjoyed her time in the library with Merrick, when she discovered that there was more to him than she had suspected. When she gets stuck with having "lessons" from him she isn't happy about it, but decides to make the best of it. She finds that she enjoys his company, and that he tends to bring out the fun side of her. She falls in love with him, but doesn't believe that he can change enough to be a good husband. When her father picks an unscrupulous man to marry her Merrick has to be able to step up. I think my favorite thing about this book was the banter between Merrick and Alixe. They played off each other beautifully. I loved the finale to this book.

A Miss for Me
I read a lot of Harlequin books – everything from the Love Inspired books to the Desire titles. I like them all. Unfortunately this offering had one main flaw I couldn’t get over.
Thank you NetGalley and Harlequin for the review copy of this book.
How to Disgrace a Lady contained a single issue that I couldn’t get past – Merrick, the main male character of the story. He is not a likeable character. His behavior, the way he treats women (for sex and money), and his attitude were quite off-putting. I didn’t start to warm up to him until I was roughly 60% into the story.
That’s a big hurdle to get over.
I realize he is supposed to be a rake - I've read other rake themed stories. I liked those guys. This guy I didn't care for at all.
Perhaps you will like him better than I did. This title was a miss for me, but I will not give up on Harlequin titles. I usually enjoy them very much. -
When i said I like alpha-male I didn't imply that all of them have to be assholes. I didn't appreciate this book so much as i could because the "hero" was insufferable in my opinion, and even if the plot and writing were good I couldn't move over my dislike for Merrick.

Favorite Tropes: Forced Marriage, Affair Turns To Love
We’ve all read books about a promiscuous hero who meets an outspoken heroine and finds himself smitten with her. Throw in a hint of scandal, and the hero finds himself rather happily engaged to the young lady, and though everyone knows of the hero’s bad reputation, that’s quickly forgotten when everyone sees how in love they are.
This is (happily) not that book. Merrick has a very scandalous reputation, and that reputation follows him throughout the book, much to his chagrin. While Alixe is rather outspoken for her station, and there is a hint of scandal that leads to Alixe being forced to wed, Merrick is not exactly what her father would want as a son-in-law.
Thus begins an entertaining tale of a man forced to help a bluestocking spinster find a husband, and a lady who will do anything to not be forced into a loveless marriage to a man she considers to be a scoundrel.
Throw in a fortune-hunting villain, some rather risque escapades right under the nose of said lady’s parents, and a change of heart that may be too late in coming, and you’ve got a delightful tale with just the right amount of steam.
Highly recommended for fans of reformed rakes whose reputations become a hindrance, bookish heroines who happily thought to never marry, and star-crossed lovers who realize that they never knew what they really wanted out of life until they were thrown onto the same path.

I liked a lot this book, Merrick is a rake that do everything in spite to his father who he despise. Alixe is an earl's daughter who want only study history and avoid marriage. Their first meeting was hilarious and was the beginning of their relationship.

A good and sweet story
-
Merrick St Magnus is the second son of a Marques and he takes his position in life seriously, that is he enjoys being as scandalous as possible. When he finds out his father is coming to town to make some changes in his life, Merrick immediately looks through his mail and accepts the Earl of Folkestone's invitation to a house party. A two week stay in Kent, well away from his father sounds perfect. Merrick knows the Earl's son Jamie, as they went to Oxford together.
Although Merrick has never used the money his father deposits into an account each month, he still does not want his father chastising him for the various scandalous behaviors that have become legendary. Merrick has always lived by the turn of a card or a good wager, and it is those wagers that sometimes get him into trouble.
On the way to Kent, Merrick meets up with Ashe Bedevere and Riordan Barrett who also are second sons and have become great friends, they decide to cool off and finding a pond to swim, this is where a young maiden comes upon them and Merrick has some fun teasing her by making her blush and run away.
Lady Alixe Burke is the Earls daughter and needed to get away from the house, so sets out for her favorite place with a book. She has decided that she is done with London and the Season and has firmly put herself on the shelf. Her family is not done with trying to find her a husband so decides to bring London to her – hence the two week party. When Merrick and Alixe are introduced they recognize each other from the pond and he decides to tease her on several occasions, much to her dismay.
Archibald Redfield is a man trying to pass himself off as a gentleman and has his sights set on Alixe because of her money. Feeling there is something sneaky about him, Alixe has shunned his advances. While sitting around bored one night, the gentlemen (Merrick, Redfield, Bedevere and Barrett) plan a wager between Redfield and Merrick, Merrick has to steal a kiss before sunrise from a lady. Redfield decides on the library for the scene and Merrick accepts thinking that there is no one up this late visiting the library and if no one shows there is no winner or loser. However, Alixe comes in to work on translating an old manuscript and while talking she finds out that Merrick knows a bit of old French and starts to help her with the translation. While they were working, Redfield burst into the library with the Earl of Folkestone to catch them in a precarious situation, however innocent it seems the Earl purposes a deal to Merrick to make his daughter the toast of London in the six weeks left of the Season and find her a husband or marry her himself.
The rest of the story is how Merrick and Alixe grow close while spending time together in Kent before going to London, there are several twists and turns, as it seems Redfield still has things he is willing to try to get Alixe and there is still the problem of both Alixe and Merrick not wanting to get married. However after a dangerous situation arises, they find that true love does change your mind. This was a good book however sometimes hard for me to connect with the characters. I was not sure I liked Merrick or Alixe in the beginning , however they both grew on me. I enjoyed the two secondary characters, Ashe and Riordan and I will be picking their stories up when they come out. -
Get ready for some fun in this book. Merrick St. Magnus is a total rake, no redemption in sight. Until he meets Alixe Burke, but even then he resists the happiness that could be his for the taking, despite the last few obstacles that stand in his way. For once in his life, Merrick wants redemption. The question is, will he fight for it?
Having his fun of the season curtailed by the imminent arrival of his father, Merrick leaves the Greenfield twins in his bed to hie off to a friend’s garden party, thereby postponing the dressing down sure to come from his sire. He and his friends decide to make a stop at a nearby lake to “freshen up” before arriving at the party. And what fun they have! Frolicking naked as the day they were born, pure joy conveyed in their laughter, this is one of the best scenes in the book. It’s even more so when Alixe Burke, brother to Merrick’s friend Jamie – though Merrick doesn’t know this until later – comes dashing through the trees to help whoever she heard in trouble, only to find men with no clothes on and playing like children in the water. Merrick stalks from the lake toward the spellbound woman, and all his rakishness comes to the fore. Priceless!
Alixe is mesmerized by the male perfection coming at her. Though she’s never seen the nude male form before, she just knows this form is perfect. And while this would be a perfect place to have them caught together in an improper situation, Ms. Scott continues to tease the reader with more and more lovely scenes between these two before their luck runs out. Both Alixe and Merrick know they should stay away from each other, each for their own reasons, but that’s just one rule they can’t stick to. Then with the help of a scorned pursuer of Alixe, they are thrown together while Merrick grooms Alixe to be the hit of the London season, thus finding a husband for her – or Merrick will find himself married to this woman who seems to be and have everything he needs in his life.
These two characters are from opposite ends of the social spectrum; Merrick in the middle of it, having the time of his life. Alixe nixes all proposals in favor of her books and the current historical translation she’s working on. But now she’s about to be the star of a very big production. Men will want to know what it is about the woman whom Merrick St. Magnus is interested in. She’ll have her pick of suitors. Except for one vindictive and greedy man, who has it all worked out to have Alixe in the end. What he doesn’t count on is Merrick as a new man, determined to protect the woman he loves, even though he may not realize it right at that moment.
An enjoyable beginning to this trilogy. I like Merrick and Alixe a lot, they’re well matched for one another, bringing different experiences in life to the relationship. Their banter works wonders in allowing the reader to get to know them so much more. You’re in for a treat when you start reading this series. So don’t delay!

I don't know if it's because I'm tired or because I've read a humungous amount of HR lately, but this one didn't hit the spot for me. Oh, it was decent enough; the hero was ridiculously gorgeous and the heroine was, underneath her deliberately dowdy dresses, lovely, too. Merrick St. Magnus (where do they get these names from?!) is a first class rake who, at the beginning of the story is about to get it on with twins! *ahem*
He's also convinced that he can't love - his father's a cold-hearted sort who never loved his wife, and Merrick believes he's a chip off the old block in that respect. (Never mind that he's never actually experienced love before, so can't really know).
Alixe (and really, what's wrong with plain ol' "Alex"?) is a twenty-six-year-old spinster with serious bluestocking tendencies, who is quite happy with her place on the shelf, despite her familiy's desperation to marry her off.
Needless to say, when the two meet, we start to see a softer side of Merrick, and a more daring side of Alixe, who is quite happy to let him under her skirts at a picnic and then reciprocates with an al-fresco hand-job a day or so later!
It's not much longer before he gets into her knickers - although to his credit, he does ask if she's sure this is what she wants *eyeroll*.
I sometimes wonder if there really were any truly gently-bred young ladies around at this time because some of them are in an awful hurry to get between the sheets and do the deed, despite the threat of pregnancy and to their reputations.
Anyway. Up her skirts very soon translates into up the duff, and although she's refused Merrick's offer of marriage, Alixe is starting to regret her decision, especially as her parents will happily see her married to a weasel of a man who is just after her money.
The ending was a bit too melodrammatic for my taste, as Alixe's parents announce her engagement to the weasel, Merrick turns up to put a spoke in the works and the weasel pulls a knife on Alixe.
I have no objection to formulaic plots - after all, there are only so many original storylines out there - and overall this one is well done. There's some very good verbal sparring between the H&H and I liked the way that Merrick was gradually revealed to be not quite as black as he would paint himself. But the characters just didn't come to life for me and I found I wasn't really invested in the outcome of the story as a result.
BUT... all ends happily, and while I enjoy a bit of fluff as much as the next person, this one didn't really do it for me.

Today's selection is How to Disgrace a Lady by Bronwyn Scott. Which this is from the Rakes Beyond Redemption miniseries from Harlequin.
What's the story is about:
Merrick St. Magnus, the second son of the Marquis of Crewe. Gotta love second sons, nothing but wastrels who love to gamble and sleep around. After all they are entitled to do, there just the spare.
Lady Alixe Burke, the daughter of the Earl of Folkestone. A self-proclaim bookworm, who believes herself firmly on the shelf. After all who wants to marry a blue-stocking girl of 26.
The first time Merrick and Alixe encounter each other is at the pond on the estate. Let's just say it's not one you'll ever forget. Merrick is intrigued by Alixe and would like to get to know her a little better. Alixe is leery of Merrick, and rightly so he lives up to the spare's motto.
One night Merrick is hanging out with the guys, when Archibald Redfield offers to make a wager with Merrick. Now this guy is a schemer, and with all schemers up to no good. He's been trying to persuade Alixe to marry him, but she doesn't trust Redfield at all. So, Redfield figures he could use Merrick to obtain Alixe.
However, his plan backfires when Merrick doesn't run away from the estate and decides to help Alixe to become the toast of society. An offer he couldn't refuse, after all it would let him remain a bachelor as long as he can launch Alixe as a success.
The more time they spend together, the more they realize there might be more to there relationship. However, will Merrick sacrifice his bachelorhood for Alixe? Or will there be another to swoop in and take her?
My thoughts:
The story started out really strong. I love the relationship between Merrick and Alixe as the story went on. However, towards the middle I was starting to get bored with it and was struggling to finish the story. It wasn't bad, it was just slowing down. However, towards the ending it started to pick up. I have to say I really liked the ending and thought it was cute. I'm curious how the rest of the miniseries will go, so I might have to read the next installment. I guess I'm sucked in, which happens from time to time.
If How to Disgrace a Lady interests you, I would go check it.
So, happy reading whatever you're reading!

Despite the fact that I seriously dislike the cover of this book, I still read it because the premise sounded interesting. And it was! I mean, a rake being forced to make a girl marriage material? Sounds like She's All That historical romance style!
Unfortunately, it didn't have all the amazing tension She's All That had for me (I'm a sap, ok? I love that movie). Our rake realized pretty soon that he was falling for the lady in question and she reciprocated, thereby not making for jealous moments and such, because there was only the treath of an unwanted suitor and that was it. I mean, except for one tiny moment, she didn't even flirt with other random men. And I so love it when they go all jealous alpha-male because of 'their' lady flirting with some other men, or their interpretation of them doing so.
But I did really like both of the main characters. Alixe was an intelligent woman, though I did kind of think she didn't have a lot of reasons for keeping herself away from men. It wasn't as if she'd loved someone and he'd only been after her money or something to make her shut herself away. I also did some eye-rolling at the notion of only a change of dress revealing her as a beauty, I mean, COME ON, most pretty girls can wear basically anything and still remain pretty.
Merrick stole my heart with his reformed rake being. He was a completely loveable scoundrel and I kinda like that! He does go from being all 'I will never be married' to 'MARRY ME! RIGHT NOW!' in the space of a day or so, which was somewhat unbelievable, but since he was directing his attentions towards a love interest that had my approval, I was somewhat ok with this. I really liked his shamelessness, strutting around naked and such.
The thing that made this only an ok book for me was that I didn't feel the tension between them. Not even when she refused to marry him. And the sexytimes weren't all that sexy. I did enjoy the moments in which they were just getting to know one another and they discovered shared interests, but I LIVE for the tension in these romance novels.
My rating: 2,5 stars -

Wonderful! I loved every bit of it! How to Disgrace a Lady was a sweet romance that any lover of historical romance will enjoy.
Lady Alixe is 26 years old and want to remain a spinster. Unfortunately, things don't go her way. But, despite it all, Alixe remained a lovely character. She held her own against Merrick. She knew when to fight and when to accept her losses. I have to say, she was a fun character. She's very clever and willing to fight for what she wants. She's strong enough not to settle. If there was anything I would have to say against her, it would be that I don't understand how the woman who fought so hard against being forced to marry suddenly decided to meekly accept the marriage her parents arranged for her. I get that it was a plot device, but it didn't fit her characterization. It would have been a lot better if the author had done without the whole engagement. But, otherwise, I really liked Alixe.
Merrick was even more fun. He's charming beyond belief. The charmer got me to smile whenever he was on the page. He's not shallow, however. He's very intelligent. His smarts combined with his charm make him unstoppable in claiming anyone's heart. He's known as a promiscuous lover, but he gives it up once he meets Alixe. I liked that he didn't wallow in denial. Once he found out he was in love with Alixe, he refused to stop fighting for her. It was very sweet and endearing.
The plot was fairly predictable. That can be a bad thing to some people, but others will appreciate it. For myself, I adored it. The story moves quickly. We get to see sensual romance and gripping suspense. It's not a literary masterpiece but it was sweet, a book that will put a smile on your face.
So, if you like sweet and sensual romance, you'll love How to Disgrace a Lady.
5/5
Thanks to Netgalley for a copy! -
How to Disgrace a Lady is a historical romance where we get the quiet bluestocking paired with the unrepentant rake – generally, one of my favourite plot lines for historical romance. While I did enjoy this novel, there were some issues that I had with it. First, I found the pacing a little bit awkward. The beginning started out strong; however, when Merrick started giving Alixe “love lessons” the plot seemed to slow quite a bit. And at the end there seemed to be an over abundance of drama that, to me, didn’t seem to quite fit in with the rest of the tone of the novel. The majority of the novel was romance, and then in the ended it seemed to turn into more of a thriller . The dramatics of the conclusion seemed disproportion to the overall mellow tone of the novel.
Second, these “love lessons” that Merrick was giving Alixe to get out of marrying her. Yes, the idea of these lessons are entertaining and worked to bring Alixe and Merrick closer together; however, I find it extremely hard to believe that a father would be okay with this situation. Which brings me to Alixe’s parents. I hated that Alixe’s parents didn’t support her, her interests, or her well being at all. I didn’t find the reasoning for Alixe’s parent’s disapproval to be well reasoned enough for their lack of support. The parents were not characterized as mean or overbearing; I didn’t really find any explanation for their behaviour, it just was. Yes, I understand that this is a historical setting and families treated their daughters differently, but at the same time the family dynamics just seemed awkward rather than having a purpose to the novel. Overall, I didn’t mind the novel, but I think that it could have been better balanced between the romance and the “thriller” aspect that appeared at the end.

Esse livro me lembra loucamente "Orgulho e preconceito" OMG <3
PERFEITO ***** ESTRELINHAS -
Rousing entertainment, with more depth than I've usually found in recent Harlequin Historicals. Fun, punchy writing and some very appealing character moments. However, the overall tone and pacing clearly suffer from the restriction of the HH format. Also, though I enjoyed the romance, both leads grated on me throughout the story - the hero for his too fast and hollow-seeming transformation, the heroine for obtuseness and immaturity at odd variance with her supposed age and personality. I also disliked the too handy "he must've been touched in the head from the start" explanation for the villain; there's something galling about using the suggestion of mental illness with such flippancy and lack of compassion. And, I really, really, really couldn't get over the constant misstep with regard to the hero's courtesy title - he's the second son of a duke, his given name can't be dropped! I get that "Lord Merrick St. Magnus" doesn't have the same sexy ring as "Lord St. Magnus," but that doesn't make it ok to always get his name wrong -_-
-
A solid 4-Star kind of historical read for me. The usage of French vernacular got to be a bit overdone in some places, and the writing tended towards the introspective, but there was something about it that felt tonally accurate. It's rare that I read a historical romance and think that - even if I enjoy it at a 5-Star level. The heroine and hero had delightful chemistry that blended humor and passion. What impressed me was that it didn't feel like it had to resort to basic tropes in order to give an HEA to the couple. Tropes do get involved, but the book never uses them as a means of getting the characters out of socially damaging situations. Overall, a delightful read that gave me a solid 3-4 hours of enjoyment. I'll be reading more of Scott's work in the future - and lucky me, the second book in this series is out next month. :)
-
My problems with this story started in chapter one which is all about the hero who comes off as a spoiled and rather mean spirited frat boy. Not a good combination for a hero. By the time we meet the heroine in chapter two, I was rather uninterested and exhausted by the large blocks of expository text. For a blue stocking heroine (I hate them since they usually come off as shrilly Mary Sues), Alexi wasn't bad, but, for a twenty-six year old, her naivety about what was expected of her due to her social standing, made her seem younger and, quite honestly, stupid.

Miniseries: Rakes Beyond Redemption
Category: Historical Romance
"Book one of Scott's new, deliciously sinful Rakes Beyond Redemption trilogy is riveting, enthralling and humorous. It's the story of a bluestocking Cinderella and the rogue who plays her unlikely fairy godmother. Regency fans will grin with glee at the witty characters, outrageous shenanigans and endless adventures." RT Book Reviews, rated 4 stars
