The road to romance can be filled with second thoughts and second guesses, and in Essence(R) bestselling author Grace Octavia's captivating new novel, one woman can't quite make peace with her choices. . .

Atlanta celebrity wedding planner Rachel Winslow has it all--except what she wants most: true love. Her friends are convinced that her college ex-turned-best friend, Ian, is her Mr. Right--even though he's in a relationship. And when Ian confides to Rachel that he plans to propose, she suddenly wonders if she's letting her best chance at happiness slip through her fingers. In a panic, Rachel becomes determined to win Ian back. But her plan backfires in ways she couldn't have imagined. . .

Heartbroken, Rachel finds herself making a series of disastrous decisions--including an affair that leaves everything she values most hanging in the balance. To get her life back on track, Rachel will have to let go of the illusions of the past--and her fears about the future.

This story was a complete let down....why ruin a perfectly good friendship if the pair does not success as a couple? The author made the male lead character look like a complete f**kboy....the textbook description of a f**kboy....Why build him up to tear him down....well educated, PhD....caring, concerned, anticipating his best friends needs, supportive....only to tear him completely down in the end and have him stand his bestfriend up not once but twice in the same day....on her birthday of all days....This storyline was underdeveloped and so was the cast of characters...it appears to me the only characters that made any sense was the mechanic and the grandmother. The author made the female lead appear like a high school teen and this was suppose to be a well educated successful 30 something entrepreneur. The storyline was elementary and the narration was subpar....she basically read to us.

(On audio) The first half of the book created a clear picture of the relationship of the main characters - friends who should be more than friends - and what would happen if... but something was missing from the second half. I just don't know what. I think this was my first book by this author. I enjoyed it enough to read (listen to) her other novels.

  • Christie

The first series I read by this author was His First Wife, His Third Wife and His Last Wife. I enjoyed those books so I had high expectations fort his one. I was not disappointed. I think an author has mastered their craft when their book can makes you gasp, groan, clap, cry, curse and laugh. This book made me do all of the above.

    ****Spoiler****
Ian was a b.... I mean he was so wishy washy and the whole time I could see he was jealous and wanted to have his cake and eat it too...just like Rachel's friend said. Xavier, I wanted him to be good, I needed him to be good and I felt just as duped as Rachel. However at the end, everything happened exactly as I wanted it!

The first chapter was cute/good/warm, but the rest of the book just didn't pull me in. It was okay, but in a forgettable sort of way. It wasn't a bad read, but it wasn't a good read! Different books reach different people.

    Really 3.75 stars

I liked the book and that it took you on a roller coaster of emotions however it still missed something for me. I can’t give it away without spoilers but I wanted more of one particular person.

Buckle up and hold on to your hats because you are in for a ride with this book. It's a love story unlike any other. Octavia does a great job of adding twists and turns that you never see coming. I don't want to spoil any of it.

This book was my first read by this author. I truly enjoyed it! The author was great at describing the relationship between characters and the history behind them.

However I read some reviews before starting the book and feel like I was one of few who didn't want Rachel to end up with Ian. I was team Xavier from the moment she opened the hotel room door and he was there. So much great detail went into the old pickup truck I almost wanted Chauncey to make a debut! Great read with a happily ever after ending!

I like the Grace Octavia books I've read. This book included. It didn't end the way I wanted. It did capture the emotions and messiness of having feelings for your best friend (of the other gender). Rachel Winslow (the main character) is a popular, famous wedding planner. She is very close to her male best friend Ian Dupree. She detests his girlfriend Scarlet. Everyone seems to think Rachel and Ian will end up together. They almost do. I think one of the best things about this book was Grace Octavia's vivid descriptions. You can visualize everything. I would have loved for the book to have ended differently. But it didn't. I don't think Grace Octavia does sequels so, I will have to be happy with the ending as is.

What He's Been Missing by Grace Octavia
Celebrity wedding planner Rachel needs to find her true love. When her best friend Ian intends to propose to what he thinks is the love of his live, Scarlet and tells Rachel she has to move fast.
Her friends think they both are perfect for one another. She starts dating to throw him off as to how much she likes Ian herself but it's backfiring on her.
She doesn't want to do their wedding but will she get roped into doing it anyway?
Liked the book but the f bomb on every page got to me after a while, otherwise the book was a good read.
Funny appropriate hashtags at the beginning of each chapter.

This story was captivating and a roller-coaster to say the least. Octavia gives us the tale of Rachael and Ian's friendship turned serious turned failed, turned loved turned fail! This novel shows genius metaphors of true love and completeness. She writes with such passion of love that by the end of the tale you'll wish it were you. Well written flowing read that will gear you up for part 2! I fully enjoyed the wit, dialogue, and depth of this book. Excellent!

I thought this was OK. I usually read mysteries or suspense but this topic did hold my interest and I finished it in a couple of days. I think it was a little confusing and unclear just who the main male character was as a character (was he the noble best friend or a confused jerk?) and the supernatural element was a little weird and unnecessary in my opinion. But it was a good effort and I may look for another by the author to see what else she has written about.

I absolutely love this book. Emotional roller coaster ride is an understatement. Constantly found myself feeling down when she was upset, enraged when she was angry, and everything in between. I'm still searching for a book that gets me as involved as this one did. Definitely something worth reading!

Grace will have you going through it. She takes you on a high then on a low then makes you wonder what made her write it like this. I'm actually feeling sorry for the main character and rooting for her at the same time.

  • Latina

This book was surprisingly refreshing. There were lots of plot twists where things didn't end up being typical and cliché. I really enjoyed it. It was very relatable and well written. I could have done without the New Orleans witchy scene but all in all it was a decent read.

  • Tigris Eden

I couldn't get into this one... Great writing though.

  • Monique

Not exactly what I was expecting but kept me interested. Love is a funny thing and can't be scripted...

  • ShayBooks

I really wanted her and Ian to be together, but then that would have been predictable .

  • PrinzessBookDragon

This was good, the ending could have been better but worth the read. Great plot.

  • Abbi

I enjoyed this novel even though the climax was a bit predictable. I read mostly non-fiction books, so I appreciated the fictitious drama of "What He's Been Missing".
