To Have and to Hold Reviews

This is a 1986 story of two sisters, one of whom cannot have children. The other sister volunteers to be a surrogate for her. The plot revolves around the relationships between the sisters and their husbands during this process.

Not my normal type of book reading choice-wise, but I've wanted to read more of Deborah Moggach for years. Her amazing historical fiction book, Tulip Fever: A Novel, is one of my all time favorite books.

This is the story of two sisters, one infertile, who embark on a surrogacy arrangement, and the consequences for their relationships. More literary and less soapy than some of her previous novels, it has rounded characters and a believable ending. I would have liked to hear more about the legalities surrounding the 'deal' as this was a bit blurred, but otherwise a good read.

Sentences and scene were concise and made me think this would be much better as a script for a play. It contained some thoughtful themes and twists but I did not emotionally invest in the characters.
