Exceptional writing by Caballero Bonald. Each sentence is an ode, not only to the Spanish language but to extreme poetical sensitivity. Not surprisingly, Bonald was both a lexicographer for the Academy of Spanish Language and a decorated poet.
As a lover of Jerez, this novel looks, smells, and tastes of Jerez through and through. His wine cellar descriptions, the light across the Albarizas, the smell of the albero, it's like reliving old memories.
Bonald weaves a surprising family saga story without you even knowing it until the very end. Maybe because of this, it feels like it's not a novel itself but a caleidoscope of memories, all stitched through the stories of members of the clan. There is no direction, no plot but just life, which is refreshing, but it also detracts a bit from gaining a bit of rhythm with the novel. -
Un poeta escribiendo una novela siempre es una buena noticia, por cómo suelen dejar su impronta en cada uno de los párrafos. Mi primer libro de este autor.
