In Japan, poets frequently use books of season words to help in the composition of haiku and linked poems. The larger books, called saijiki, contain extensive descriptions of natural and cultural phenomena, and sample verses involving them.
Smaller books, often fitting a shirt pocket or purse, simply list season words and, often, a brief description or a couple of sample verses for each. Such books, called kiyose, or season-word guides, tend to appeal to advanced poets, who use them simply to check their memories about when this or that seasonal phenomenon occurs. In this very stripped-down kiyose (say key-yo-say), only season words are listed, by season and category.
