Demeter and Persephone (Greek Myths) Reviews

  • SheAintGotNoShoes

A nice re-telling of the classic story of Demeter and Persephone. A mother's love and devotion managed to make a bad situation a whole lot easier for all !

I found this book to be incredibly meh, both in storytelling and in illustration. Now, this book is meant for children, so I certainly didn't expect any "steamy" stuff, but I've seen several children's books which explored the myth very well without getting into THAT sort of thing. Hades is barely mentioned here, and his kidnapping seems like an afterthought in the overall story.

The illustrations are hit and miss. Some of them are actually pretty nice, but some of the others are just really off-putting. Not what I'd recommend for any H and P fan.

An easy-to-understand retelling for kids. Illustrations are recognizable yet also unusual. Some moments might be confusing to kids or require further explanation to be understood. Also contains helpful supplementary resources (map, family tree, names of prominent gods/goddesses), but should be placed earlier in the book, before the story begins.

Trying to learn more about Demeter's journey to find Persephone. We are often taught much about how Persephone felt during this ordeal, but not much about Demeter. I am finding that there isn't much written about Demeter's journey. I want to know more!

  • Robin

Skilled retelling of the myth and the book design makes it feel mature, yet non-intimidating. Recommended for grades 4-6, younger if already familiar with Greek myths.

  • Diana

Excellent retelling of the myth for younger readers. Illustrations are wonderful!

  • Jen Appell

Very short, but well written for young readers.

This was utterly delightful. For those that do not know, I am majorly into Greek mythology and always have been.

One of my close friends who is also here on Goodreads (she knows who she is!) recommended it to me.

And I can’t be more happy about that but I must tell you this is not available that I can tell on Kindle I had to order it.

It’s short and it basically tells the story of Demeter and Persephone.

Demeter is the goddess of the Earth and fertility. She is who is responsible for the luscious and vivid greenery that we see all around us.

She is the one who plants and who harvests, she is the goddess of growing things. All the great beautiful outdoors, all the chirping of the birds, and the leafy green forests, all the outdoor murmurings of roses and other types of flowers, they all come from Demeter.

Persephone is her daughter. She is vivid and delicate and like a beautiful red rose herself.

And her loveliness does not go unnoticed. For a man has laid eyes on her and fallen deeply in love.

Unfortunately for Persephone, this man is Hades god of the underworld. And he wants Persephone to sit beside him as his queen of the underworld.

Oh but you see Demeter is of course a mother. And she is a mother who loves her daughter fiercely, she is a lion with a watchful eye on her cub.

So what will happen in this story? You will have to read it and find out.

Great introduction to these classic myths for young readers with wonderful illustrations. Will help young readers understand the stories, characters and their connections while the illustrations add color and tie it all together.

  • Angela

This is one of my favorite Greek myth stories and it is wonderfully redone in this book.
To the 3rd graders, I had to explain how this myth is how the seasons came to be.

  • Megan S.

Loved reading this with the kids. Thanks, Angela, for the suggestion.
