Paddington at Large (Paddington, #5) Reviews
-
I love these books so much; genuinely laugh out loud funny. It's hard to believe I first read them before my age had even reached double figures! Mind you, my childhood self probably would have been in a state of mild disbelief if you'd told him I would re-read them in my forties! :-)
-
These stories are timeless.
I loved reading about Paddington's antic's where he always seems to do something right even if he does get in a pickle! -
Another fun book about my favorite bear --- Paddington.
-
If you're a fan of Winnie the Pooh, you have to give Paddington a try. He's delightful, as are the Browns, and this book is a treat for the whole family. Highly recommend!
My Rating: 5 stars -
More hilarious adventures of the marmalade-loving bear. I can't stop laughing when I'm reading these books!
-
I'm really enjoying this series (read by Hugh Bonneville) and the escapade's Paddington always gets into. Definitely recommend this series to younger audiences who want to follow the adventures of a bear who comes from Peru and now lives with the Brown Family in Winter Gardens in London.
2nd time reading
This cheered me up when I needed it! I love reading about Paddington's adventures and misadventures. Always comforting. -
Lovely Paddington is in trouble as usual!
-
In which Paddington takes things a little too literally.
-
Another great collection of Paddington’s adventures. He’s so funny and especially when he takes things literally and gets himself into trouble. The garden and Mr Gruber’s outing two classic examples of this. If ever you feel down reading Paddington lifts your spirits.
-
These books are just like, Curious George, but actually good. I listened to this one and it was beautifully entertaining.
-
For some reason, even thought so far the Paddington books are pretty much all exactly alike, they are still wildly entertaining, and my 6-year-old and I cackle away the whole time...
-
Again as always so cute.
-
These stories are not only for the young but for the young at heart too.
-
Reading the Paddington books is always so fun because of how wholesome they are and this one didn't disappoint.
-
Endlessly charming and filled with delightful antics..
Recommended to any Mommy of a child from 5 to 13 ...13 for the more whimsical children. And also recommended for adults who love reading classic children's literature. -
3,5 stars rounded up to 4. A cute addition to the series 😉

3,5 ⭐
Paddington has developed an interest in gardening which means a careful eye has to be kept on him in case he damages Mr Brown's pride and joy. Mr Curry sees the chance to get Paddington to do a few jobs for him but of course, no job is simple when you have paws instead of hands! I have no sympathy for Mr Curry because he is just taking advantage of a good natured bear so the chaos that follows is his own fault! The following day Mr Gruber takes Paddington to the park where a band are playing. Paddington is hacked off, not understanding what an unfinished symphony is and goes to have it out with the band leader. Oh dear, that poor bear needs to have everything explained to him in great detail to stop him going off the deep end!
Paddington's next escapade is the arrival of a new TV at the Browns. He doesn't quite get the way a TV works and sets about making improvements leading to all kinds of chaos as usual. He also has a surprise for his family when he appears on his favourite quiz show, and hard stares are there when he is told he has an answer wrong. Leaving him alone is never a great idea, especially when he has a toffee recipe in his paws that he really wants to try out. The mess in the kitchen is bad enough but when his family find Paddington in pain, it requires a trip to the hospital. Oh the poor wee bear! I was quite emotional with this story!
Christmas shopping is stressful at any time but spare a thought for the staff at Barkridges when Paddington decides to stick his nose into the in store product demonstrations! You don't get things going that wrong on the shopping channels but there again, the shopping channels haven't had the pleasure of dealing with a bear from Darkest Peru. Paddington's final outing is being drafted into the local pantomime to do the sound effects offside. The actors nerves are frayed enough without having Paddington on the loose, especially when he steps in to try and save the day without being invited.
This was a particularly mad set of adventures were funny as always and the cute black and white illustrations just added more humour to each situation. The toffee incident had me feeling as worried for poor Paddington as his family were but of course it was all ok in the end. Reading these books have helped lift my mood through lockdown and it makes me want to revisit childrens classics that I enjoyed as a kid. -
I can't believe i never read these before, each volume in the 12 book set i have is a delight, this is number 5. Mr Brown (Paddington to you and me)has more fantastic everyday adventures with a spot of gardening and an impromptu trip on a lawnmower. Next up is a day out in the park with Mr Gruber, and the bandstand, it is never going to go smoothly with Paddington around. Then the Browns get a new televisoin set, and Paddington catches an intruder in the house. Paddington then gathers everyone round the new tv for the evenings viewing, but he is nowhere to be seen, until the show begins, Paddington is a contestant on the show, Anne Robinson would have mether match with Paddington! The next adventure involves a little experiment in making toffee, in which a trip to the hospital follows. Its getting near to christmas so its time for some shopping - Paddington takes a trip to the bargain basement. Finally its pantomime time and Paddington is enlisted to create the sound effects.

Paddington means an awful lot to me and this set of stories is no different. As well as being incredibly charming, set in a time when things seemed gentler definitely, it's Paddington's eternal optimism that always shines through in the books. He's as naive as a child but as sophisticated as an adult Michael Bond once wrote and I think it's not only good for him but a great lesson for all of us wishing to live a little simpler.

Paddington at Large? As in Paddington on the lamb? What crime could that cute little Snuggles-doppelganger have possibly committed?
-
The first chapter was hilarious! I thought this was going to be the best one yet. The rest was entertaining for sure, just not laugh out loud funny.

Another adorable and charming Paddington book. Whether its making toffee or appearing on a game show, Paddington is so endearing in all of his adventures. This is a nice continuation of the Paddington series. Great for fans of the previous books.
The old favorites make their appearances (Mrs. Bird, Mr. Gruber, even mean old Mr. Curry) and Paddington makes plenty of new friends along the way as well. Silly, fun, and entertaining, this book full of new adventures is such to delight Paddington fans.
Note on the illustrations: In Chapter Four: Paddington Hits the Jackpot, there are two illustrations of Paddington with what appears to be a cigar (one at the beginning and one at the end). There is no mention in the text of Paddington smoking, but for whatever reason the illustrations include it. The book was written in the 60s, so different time and all that, but it's good to know going into it. It doesn't take away from the story, but it may be useful for parents to know about an adorable talking bear depicted smoking beforehand.
Overall, a wonderful story about a friendly bear making his mark on the world in pure Paddington fashion. -
"Paddington At Large" is Michael Bond's fifth collection of stories about Paddington the bear, who was discovered by the Brown family in London's Paddington Station and became a member of their family.
This anthology is less cohesive than the last two; its stories are only loosely connected, but all involve the antics of the talking bear and the trouble he gets into and out of while trying to do good.
Of the seven tales contained herein, my favourite was "Paddington Hits the Jackpot" in which the young bear appears on a television game show and outsmarts the host by explaining why each of his answers is correct, despite what is written on the host's card.
In other stories,
Paddington has a disastrous time mowing the lawn of his mean neighbor Mr. Curry;
At a concert in the park, Paddington is annoyed to learn that one of the symphonies is "unfinished"
Paddington confronts a repairman in the Brown home
A recipe for toffee proves too much for a young bear to handle
Paddington causes chaos in a department store
A local playwright recruits Paddington for his stage production in which the bear saves the day
Each story is short and each one made me smile. -
Anyone giving shelter to a little bear from Peru should not be surprised if life suddenly turns exciting. Whether it's a wild ride on the lawn mower, a trip to the hospital trying to make toffee or as a saving angel in a Christmas piece. The Brown family's patience will be put to the test for some hard time Paddington again. But thank God it always turns out fine.
I love the books about the Bear Paddington. Just when my day wasn't that good, the stories about the well-behaved young bear keep cheer on me. The funniest thing here was how Paddington amazed a quiz master with his answers and takes a little bias. For this, jam is now more often available in the home for retired bears in Peru.
I'm currently reading “Paddington Marches on” and although all books follow the same pattern, they bring sunshine into this deadest winter time -
Well, as much as I love the narrations of Hugh Bonneville and Stephen Fry, I now think I have a new favourite reader: Bernard Cribbins back in 1975! The old recordings (which I found on YouTube) are absolutely charming, and I am not alone in that opinion - several commenters say they use them to fall asleep to every night. They don’t contain all the stories, but I was able to find the 4-minute TV episodes of the missing ones, so I don’t think I have missed much - and I’m sure Paddington would applaud my frugality. ;-)

I'm pretty sure that this is the first Paddington Bear book I've ever read. (but only pretty sure. My childhood was about thirty years ago, so my memories of that time are pretty hazy.) Even if it isn't, I still enjoyed Paddington's funny yet hapless adventures. This won't be the last book I read about Paddington; it's good stuff!
