Bruised Paradise (Illinois Poetry Series) Reviews

How does one review a book of poetry, especially when one rarely reads poetry and the work is that of a poet who is the Illinois Poet Laureate, has won poetry prizes and a poetry fellowship? I was moved to read this collection as well as "Chance Ransom", another of his works, because I have had the pleasure of hearing Stein read from his works on a few occasions. The topics of his poems include a young boy who watches his mother visit adults and children who are incapacitated and brings with her baked goods that bring them joy. Another poem is about an artist who earns money by conducting telephone surveys, enduring rude responses from those who don't want to be bothered, all because it affords him a way to purchase the paint he needs to finish his work of the Madonna and child.

He writes of the familiar or common, brings to mind long-forgotten memories and experiences often with an unpredictable twist.
