A Theory of Socialism and Capitalism: Economics, Politics, and Ethics Reviews

A strong theoretical overview of the economic and ethical issues involved in the capitalism vs socialism debate and includes Hoppe's argumentation ethics which shows that even the act of taking a position and arguing in favor it is implicitly based on recognition of individualism and the legitimacy of private property. A very readable treatise although the economic side of the argument is not developed in sufficient detail to likely prove convincing on people unfamiliar with Austrian literature.

Hans-Hermann Hoppe is one of the best and certainly the most innovative of
Rothbards disciples. Whether you agree with him or not, there is no denying that he is always thoughtful and eloquent. Among other things, he came up with a defense of the rothbardian philosophy via discourse ethics and he showed
the link between time preference and democracy.
Before you take on this book, you should be familiar with the Austrian School of economics and the philosophy behind anarchocapitalism.
For a New Liberty,
The Ethics of Liberty and
The Machinery of Freedom are excellent starting points for anarchocapitalism, and
Choice or
Economics in One Lesson for the Austrian School.
In this book, Hoppe presents both a case for anarchocapitalism and against socialism. His argumentation is rigorous and stringent, and he never loses track of where it's supposed to lead. Hoppe doesn't go on tangents or loses himself on side issues (except in his footnotes). Halfway through the book, he starts talking about epistemics to disprove empirical-positivism, by showing that you cannot defend empiricism with empirical arguments and hence that the position is self-defeating. It takes him maybe twenty pages to get there, and yet he doesn't skip any steps in his argumentation, nor does he try to simplify it. Bringing up the epistemics this late and then treating them in this much detail takes a lot of intellectual courage, but Hoppe is not lacking in that.
The one major error I could find was that he didn't differentiate properly between the calculation- and the knowledge-problem. When he starts talking about these two problems, he cites
Hayek, not
Mises, but then talks about it as Mises would, until he doesn't anymore:Nor can he establish whether his way of producing for consumer demand is indeed the most efficient way (as compared with conceivable alternative ways) of satisfying the most urgent consumer needs, or if less urgent needs are being satisfied at the expense of neglecting more urgent ones, thus causing at least a relative drop in the value of the goods produced. Without being
able to resort unrestrictedly to the means of economic calculation, there is simply no way of knowing. Of course one could go ahead and try to do one’s best. That might even be successful sometimes, though one would have no way of assuring oneself that it is. But, in any case, the larger the consumer market is which one has to serve, and the more the knowledge regarding preferences of different groups of consumers, special circumstances of historical time and geographical space, and possibilities of technology is dispersed among different individuals, the more likely it is that one will go wrong.
As Mises pointed out, however, even a near-omniscient central planner could not rationally allocate means of production, unless the economy was stagnant or production chains very short. The planner could know exactly what consumptions goods are in demand, which technological possibilites exist and how the geographical circumstances are, and he still couldn't plan the economy. That is why the two problems should not be thrown together. Hoppe himself has learned the lesson, as he later participated in the dehomogenization debate with an essay printed in his collection
The Economics and Ethics of Private Property: Socialism: A Property or Knowledge Problem?. -
-
Very similar to Democracy: The God That Failed in how he analyzes institutions.

A Theory of Socialism and Capitalism: Economics, Politics, and Ethics is Hoppe's first work to be translated in English. It's a valuable addition of what Rothbard and Nozick have already explained in their work. It reaffirms the ultra minarchy in Anarchy, State, and Utopia and the idea that free market can provide for law enforcement and military. It's still a bit shaky on the Constitution aspect but overall it's a pretty solid work for those want to refresh their arguments for liberty. However, the writing was very academic (which means "hurr durr, I am so smart") so not very beginner friendly if you want to teach them basic economics and philosophy.

Hoppe seems to have a different conception of socialism than Mises. Mises argued against socialism on the grounds that it was impossible to have an economy without a price system, and so true socialism was impossible and planners instead aimed to mimic market signals but lacked the relevant information which is distributed among individuals. Hoppe does think socialism exists as the degree of state intervention or ownership in the economy. For Hoppe there are only two possible economic systems: socialism and capitalism. All systems are on a continuum between these two types. Pure capitalism he defines as complete private property and exchange without intervention by the state. Any deviation from this entails some degree of socialism, with state ownership and interference with trade. Within socialism, he distinguishes three types: "Conservative" socialism accepts private ownership but favors regulation, behavioral controls, and protectionism to preserve social order, the "liberal" or social democratic version tends toward mixed ownership and redistribution for egalitarian ends, and Soviet or state socialism which is total state ownership and a planned economy to completely remake society.
Socialism of these types are defined by political ends like social equality or status quo maintenance, so economic critiques don't totally discredit socialism. After all, what if one agrees that state intervention makes some people worse off, but still prefer the intervention for other ends? Socialism after all, as Mises argued, is built on a theory of conflict be it class or nation, and so don’t see making their opponents worse off as a bad thing which seems to be at the root of politics. Hoppe does admit that capitalism leads to greater inequality and social disruption which are the concerns for those critical of total free market capitalism. By Hoppe’s logic most people would be socialist or capitalist to some degree. To this Hoppe gives moral arguments against socialism for natural property rights, which paradoxically could allow voluntary non-capitalist communities, based on rationalist axioms of human action whereas Mises made a consequentialist case for market economics making everybody overall better off while property rights historically arising from violence or occupation in practice defined by the government. -
Hans-Herman Hoppe has written here an essential book on understanding how socialism in its core is also clearly present in the ideal of a social democracy (and thus Liberals in the US) as well as in conservatism - and then showing why those views are wrong, and then ending on why the alternative of Capitalism prevails as the right choice of economics in a society. Best is the first part of the book, as the connection between Socialist ideals and our modern societies is not often very apparent, and the proponents of those theories would say that they do not agree with socialism at all - while Hoppe shows that yes, they do. This is very important to grasp! The second half, roughly, is less accessible and denser to read, although slowing down and carefully reading helps in getting it and understanding it. Sometimes Hoppe gets help from others to explain it all in more simple terms, like Murray Rothbard.

A leitura é breve e fácil. -
Mutatis mutandis this is a great book! Hoppe is brilliant in laying out his a priori of argumentation as a rationalistic basis for pure capitalism and as a complete refutation of socialism. One cannot walk away from this book not agreeing with Hoppe's conclusions without making a performative contradiction.
-

Hoppe is great - look forward to reading more from him.
