Good Neighbors (Life in Icicle Falls #2.5) Reviews

A sweet novella to promote the Youth Assisting Youth program. There isn’t a lot of depth to the story, it is a novella, but the author did a great job getting her message across.

I liked the characters and they way they handled the challenges they had to face. Plus, the ending was really sweet. A real feel good story.

  • LaFleurBleue

It should have been so much better than that. One character seemed to be nothing more than a super-rich frankly half-boring do-gooder. The other was just compulsively incapable of just speaking with her son, that she treated as if he were still 4 or 5 years old instead of 13 - honestly she deserved every small wrong doing her son did. She did not communicate with her former husband either, though they allegedly went to marriage counselling. And she did not try communicating with her new neighbor for whom she had the hots, despite her having a conflict with him.
Too short story to be really developed, difficult to like and understand characters and limited character development except in the kid.
I won't look forward another book from this author.

  • Mya

I love the plot, but the constant switching between the point of views was very confusing.

  • Ellen (more books, please)

Epitomizes what is wrong with novellas.
Too shallow, too trite, too quick. Just too many things wrong.

There was nothing horrible about it; there was just nothing good about it, either.

More of a promo piece for a teen program.

There were also formatting issues, misspelled words and run together words.

    Enjoyed this short sweet story.

This is a terrific short novella type story that is based on an actual group made to help teens by finding mentors for them. I believe the group is YAY but I can't remember exactly and I can't locate my silly Kindle to double check ( it lost me again). That was fun to read about and knowing that going into the story it made me a little more involved in the plot and so on.
I won't give a lot of detail about the story because it's very short and too much would leave you not having to read it! It has a woman and her son who have decided to move to Icicle Falls after dealing with the fallout of the death of her husband. She learned he was a massive gambler and gambled most of their money away so she decides to move into her families cabin. Of course when she gets there she has a knock on the door and at that point the story really picks up! I won't tell you what happens but it's not good for her!
The only thing that was a little blah about the story was that the main lady did seem like a bit of a gold digger when it came to her marrying her husband and she still seemed to be a bit snooty through out. I guess it was hard to relate to her most of the time. Not all of it though. Some things that happen were easier to empathize with and even like her a bit. Other than that though it's a great little story and I'm so glad I read it!

    Good Story

This author is new to me and I thought the story was good. The characters were well thought out too. But there were parts of this story that were hard to read because final edits were not done thoroughly and proofreading wasn’t done well either. I’m an avid reader and expect to see a mistake or two but not ten or more. The editor in my opinion gets 2 stars.

    Love Icicle Falls!

Love how this series just keeps on getting better & better! Now onto the next book! With so much hope & love you will find in Icicle Falls that it makes you want to live there!

    Rather unbelievable and too easy

If this is truly inspired by real story, then the story itself rather unbelievable. The one who want to proclaimed her house for late husband's debt, became her lover. Also the process seems too easy

  • Chris

    A perfect ending

    Enjoyable

I love Sheila’s books. This was a quick read about starting over and daring to love again, as well as a story about reaching out to troubled or at risk young people.

  • Mary

Despite the fact that this book was a quick read and quite short, I thoroughly enjoyed it. And I wish it could have been longer, giving the characters and the plot more depth.

"Under different circumstances, Meredith Lange was someone he would've wanted to see more of. But all he wanted right now was to see her gone."

Oh, it's a funny thing when paths collide. Or even when fate steps in.

Meredith and her teenage son were left with a mess after her late husband left them with tons of debt and broken hearts. The only thing she still had was a getaway cabin and the start of a new life.

Too bad that cabin already had a new owner...Jed Banks. He wasn't going to let someone take away the dreams he had for that land, and that cabin. Even if he couldn't get this certain woman off his mind.

"I'm sorry we didn't meet under better circumstances."
    "Me, too."
"I don't know whether you heard or not, but I'm building a camp. That's what I wanted the land for. I'm not some rich jerk looking to take your cabin."
"I'm not some spoiled rich woman wanting to keep a vacation home."
    "I never thought you were."

This was a great story about learning to live again and forgiveness. A story of a mother just trying to do everything she can for her son. And a man doing all he can for struggling youth.

    Really good book for all!!

"Will you have lunch with me later?"
"I think I can fit you in."
    "And how about dinner?"
    "That's a strong possibility."
    "I'm all about possibilities."

Sometimes a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do. Meredith moved her and her teenage son from her city home to her family's cabin in a small town after the death of her husband and losing everything because of his gambling debts. Shortly after getting there, she meets her neighbor, Jed, who 'bought' her cabin and land. So he takes legal steps to evict her then finds out that he was swindled by Meredith's husband and doesn't really own the land. Jed and Meredith are attracted to each other and try to get past the conflicts they have had.

I really liked the story line and the part about Jed's Youth Assisting Youth program. The writing flowed perfectly and I just kept reading without putting it down. The characters were very well developed. I really felt a connection with Meredith and her problems. I admired her determination to get past the mess her life turned into and try to provide a home for her son. Her son hated her, well all adults, but that's what teenagers do - hate their parents. Jed was a nice man with his involvement with kids but I didn't feel like I knew him very well.

Another beautiful story by Sheila Roberts.

Poor Meredith is left to pick up the pieces of her broken life after the death of her husband. His death leaves her a single parent to her young son and his enormous gambling debts leave her without a penny to her name and no choice but to move into their vacation cabin, the only property she has left to call home. Or so she thought. When Jed Banks shows up at her front door one night to find out what she's doing in HIS cabin her life takes another nosedive.

Good Neighbors has a wonderful storyline and great characters. It was heartwarming to read along as Meredith put the pieces of her life back together and learned how to trust again. There isn't a villain to be found anywhere in this story and sometimes that's exactly what you need in a book! Icicle Falls strikes again. How could things ever go badly there?

If you've never read a Sheila Roberts book, Good Neighbors is a great place to get acquainted. It's short and sweet. I read it in one sitting and enjoyed every page.

After losing everything because of her husband's gambling problem and his death from a car accident Meredith has no choice but to relocate her and her son to the family's cabin in Icicle Falls because that is the only thing they have left or so she thinks. He finds Meredith and her son living on in and declares he owns it and they are trespassing. Meredith proves that she did not sign the deed selling the cabin to him. Jed is attracted to Meredith and she is to him, but his desire to own the cabin, threatens to hurt their chance of love.

This short story starts off with a a case of if you didn't have bad luck you would have no luck. This poor young widowed woman with a son feels she is a double loser already when it comes to men because the second man she allowed to get close to her heart wrapped his car around a tree in a drunken stooper. After, puuting her so far in gamblers debt she can't see the light of day. Her only thing left is the cabin gifted to them by her parents so she moves there with her son. Now to find out after she is all moved in said husband sold it after forging her signing her name to all the paperwork. Now, handsome new owner wants her out. Hmmm...does that happen? You have read this sweet read. Heartbreaking at times too. But very good.

This book was a nice fast read. I felt bad for Leo and Meredith. To have someone basically steel from you to feed there addiction regardless of what it is, is terrible. I loved the part where Leo defended his mother in his own 12 year old way. The story felt rushed at some point and sort of lacking. Jed wanted Meredith and his camp. Of course you saw the route that issue was going to take. It was a good storyline but it was all very cookie cutter and fast.

Adversaries who turn into lovers is a very common twist on the friends to lovers type of romance .

Sometimes it is hard to roll with what life dishes out and sometimes we find the hardest moments turn into the sweetest ones we never expected to enjoy again.

Readers like myself have learned that with some of life's hardest lessons we learn what will either make us stronger or totally break us in two.

  • Lea

The story was cute, a novells around Icicle falls. A newly single mom, who is unlucky in love moves her tern age son to I.F. to start over. A legal misunderstanding brings a handsome man into her life. It is a whirlwind courtship.
The editing was horrible and if it wasn't a favorite author I might have stopped reading.

  • Jenny T.

This is a short romance story set in Icicle Falls, WA which the author has used as a setting for some of her other books. Meredith Lange is newly widowed with a teen son trying to start over, but comes into conflict with Jed Banks regarding the true ownership over her cabin. Some of the character interactions seemed a bit simplified, but this was an okay read.

A quick novella that comes in at 77 pages on Goodreads. Rarely I can find a novella that I enjoy enough to give it a high rating. Usually there isn’t enough to the story to grab on to, but this one surprised me. The only downfall to the story was the Hero. I didn’t quite connect to him as much as I would have liked.
