How should anarcho-capitalists engage the modern state? Hans-Hermann Hoppe dissects the nature of the modern democratic state and suggests strategies for enacting a bottom-up libertarian revolution in ideology and civil government.

Hoppe begins by examining the nature of the state as “a monopolist of defense and the provision and enforcement of law and order.” Like all state-mandated monopolies, the monopoly of law enforcement also leads to higher prices and lower quality of services. Why is this state of affairs tolerated? The modern democratic states, much more than the monarchies and princely estates of old, are seen as moral and necessary despite ample evidence to the contrary.

In the minds of most modern citizens of democratic states, law and order is what the state says it is, and this has led to a long period of centralization and power consolidation by those states.

How can the libertarian fight back against this trend?

Hoppe offers a program that can pave the way for a new libertarian society.

The role of this book only becomes apparent after realizing that it is a transcribed lecture given by Professor Hoppe at a Mises Institute conference back in 1997. In this case, brevity is not the soul of wit; taken out of context the philosophy seems poorly constructed and the arguments shallow. Only well-read minarchists, anarcho-capitalists, and neo-reactionaries will be aware of the deeper praxeological foundations that are necessary for understanding. A casual reader of political philosophy will disregard this as a collection of asserted half-truths. It does contain some goodies here and there, but otherwise needs to be ditched for more rigorous texts.

    2.1 stars out of 5.

This booklet started great. Hoppe's explanation of the state's monopoly of protection and why the state's legalized extortion racket grows stronger and stronger as the protection it provides grows weaker, and why this happens, is very convincing. But, his explanation of what has to be done to break up the protection monopoly, although it sounds good, was not quite as convincing to me. For example, after the federal government relinquishes control, the government property is to be distributed among citizens based on total taxes they had paid over the years. Yet, with no government in control, who would do this and how would it be done? In other words, I didn't see much evidence or reasoning why the anarcho capitalist replacement of government with competing protection groups could work along with a weaker centralized protection group without one of them eventually growing into a monopoly again. It is like he is saying if we educate ourselves not to allow this to happen, we can keep it from happening. I'm not so sure this would work for long.

Essay on how to establish the libertarian social order within existing democracies

Hoppe is..Hoppe. Every one of his essays and books is essentially making the case for the same desired outcome, but focusing on different aspects of the overall argument. In this essay he describes how both we got to where we are today (territorial monopoly democracy) and how to use the tools of democracy to return to a libertarian social order (anarchocapitalism)

Good enough, Hoppe maintains consistency, but this subject needs a lot of explanations, and this book is too short and only talks about the subject superficially, and he kinda repeats the same in his book Democracy.

Fun Fact! The title is a reference to "What is to Be Done?" from Vladimir Lenin.

Combine the more strategic elements of this essay with counter-economics and the cause for liberty may actually have a fighting chance!

Very based and very redpilled. Besides the point about greater efficiency of few defense contractors I agree with all what's there.

How to regain liberty starting local

Short and sweet -- you can read it in an hour. Hoppe diagnoses what ails us and offers a bold anti-democratic two-step program to regain liberty, starting at the local level. Although written back in 1997, this essay is especially relevant today with the Free State Project taking of in New Hampshire.

After an excellent introduction, the stragedy proposed didn't ring a bell for me. However, I appreciate the effort and let more of it come!

A good read. Definitely inspirational to the anarchy-capitalist reader, and probably should be required reading for all political libertarians as encouragement to focus on the local level.
