The world's all-time bestseller meets a twenty-first century musical icon. In this seven-week course, suitable for group use or personal reflection, Steve Mann skilfully interweaves the Gospel narrative with the story of Les Miserables. Daily devotional readings are built around seven key spiritual themes - Grace, responsibility, truth, compassion, fellowship, darkness and reconciliation. These are complemented by weekly study material tied in to the 2012 movie release. This is an ideal resource for those looking for a Lent study but works equally well at any time of year.

Steve Mann has produced a book that works through the storyline of the novel, arranging it into key themes. The commentary on the plot and characters is matched up with passages from the Bible in a helpful way. Primarily written as a daily devotional, there are discussion questions at the end of the week (though these are not well developed). The reader should be aware that although the group guide includes clips from the movie musical this is a guide to the novel, and refers to a lot of material not in the film.

Read as our Lent book for 2014 and it made a very interesting approach to what can otherwise be a rather solemn 'ought to be doing this' duty. This took the BOOK of Les Miserables (but linked to the film/musical versions too) and highlighted how Hugo had incorporated key Christian themes (forgiveness, reconciliation, redemption etc) through the story. After progressing the story, the author linked it in with Bible passages and then some 'application' statements and questions. After 6 days on the theme, the 7 acted as a 'plenary' which was the only disappointing part as the questions for this were formulaic and rarely introduced something which hadn't already been discussed during the previous days. All in all though a very original approach to Lent readings, and a useful framework for individual meditation, partner discussion or a small group committed to work alone and then meet for the 7 day plenary. The 'day after Easter Day' extra reading was a nice touch, it gave the stepping point to continue the habit and not just think 'that's it then' at the end of Lent.
