Martin Luther King, Jr. (Heroes of America Illustrated Lives) Reviews

This book is for children, so I will rate it for children. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about M.L.K. Jr.'s learning experiences, what made him a great civil rights leader and orator. He knew, and was raised, with a strong sense of what was right and what was wrong.

I love this book. Very powerful in so many ways. I love the illustrations. I can't wait to read this to my future kid, one day.

"I just want to do God's will, and he's allowed me to go to the mountain top and I've looked over and I have seen the promised land". During the age of the civil rights movement there were many influential individuals who help bring about change; and one of the most influential of them all in my opinion was Martin Luther King Jr. In Herb Boyd telling of this amazing individual he starts by telling the story of young martin growing up with the dream of being a preacher. Throughout his young life he noticed and was appalled by segregation and after graduating from college he put his foot forward to becoming a minister. This book, in detail, showcases Martin's journey through life from early youth to adulthood fighting for change and even as a young man people believed he would be great.
This book utilized several Illustrations, used to help place emphasis on certain moments on the adjacent page. For example, on pg. 230 in conjunction with his quote, "The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges". there is an Illustration of Martin standing before the scales of justice. On several other pages the illustrations helped me sense the power and emotion of the moments therein and in the text. Boyd captures the feeling of Martin's words very well and in the final pages talking about his legacy and those who knew him the eloquence of the words moved me. While there are many biographies on Dr. King I believe for younger demographics this is a good book to read I highly recommend it. -
