Minna No Nihongo Kanji 1 (English Edition) Reviews

hahaha my Kanji bible... used to recognize 100 kanjis, now I only remember few of them :(

The same applies as for all my minna no nihongo books: it's great to work with in class, very understandable and well explained. For the kanji books, I have some separate comments.
This first volume is very useful as it explains where certain kanji came from: with little pictures to show how you can actually see a bird in the kanji for bird, 鳥, for example, it is really helpful when you're prone to visualization when learning. It uses a lot of pictures in general so you can tie kanji to certain situations or images.
However, it's not always very useful that the kanji lessons are so intrinsically tied to the main lessons in the other books. You won't learn some of the very basic kanji until much later, because the words don't turn up until lesson 15 (the case for 口, mouth, and 目, eye, to name a few). In other words, there's no real logic behind the learning order, other than 'this is the order of your vocabulary lists'. In hindsight, I think it might have been better if they'd produced a kanji book separate from the vocabulary lists, with themes per chapter, for example 'body parts' or something similar. It's probably easier to make connections between kanji that way. Since you have to learn a lot, the more you can connect and memorize, the better it is. -
