Renaissance in Italy: Italian Literature Part 1 (of 2) Reviews
-
Chapters on Pulci and Boiardo were good. Ariosto was mostly stuff I already knew about him. The stuff on how the chansons de geste and chivalrous poetry made it to Italy and how they were transformed was fascinating but insufficient--really wish someone would translate Pio Rajna into English! The popular secular poetry chapter was good but I had the sense he was hiding all the good (ie dirty) stuff from us by not translating it from the Italian. Boccaccio I want to take an interest in but never been able to read him or care about his life. Don't care about Dante, Lorenzo di Medici or Polizianio. Thought I wouldn't care about popular religious poetry but Jacopone da Todi was funny and the pageants at Florence were interesting. Gonna read the next volume which goes in depth on the Orlando Furioso, Pietro Aretino, the reinvention of drama, pastoral, burlesque, satire, history, Machiavelli, etc. Also should probably check out the first volume of this series, The Age of Despots, because I can never keep track of the actual history of this period.
