Apomixis Reviews
-
After you finish reading this book you have the feeling of a lost opportunity. Yes, because the initial idea is very stimulating, but then the plot is developed in a very superficial and trivial way.
The apomixis in the title is the ability of a plant to reproduce asexually, i.e. its ability to produce clones of itself. In the book, a researcher has found the right sequence to make this happen and therefore all the "bad guys" want to appropriate it, given that being able to produce clones of perfect plants would make the owner of this patent unimaginably rich. This is because developing the perfect plant, for example a corn plant that grows with little water, at very high temperatures, resisting disease and insect attacks, and then reproducing it indefinitely, would make infinitely rich the company capable of this. The idea behind the book is therefore very intriguing and so the reader expects a story developed in the style of Michael Crichton, and instead the plot is really boring, the characters are insipid and very superficial, the action never develops in an interesting way and so in the end the book leaves nothing but the feeling of a missed opportunity. Two stars. -
