Moosewood Restaurant New Classics Reviews

I love the Moosewood I've eaten there plenty of times and I own most of their early cookbooks But life got busy and I haven't really Moosewooded much in the last two decades It's good to be back This cookbook was FANTASTIC It is really packed with wonderful recipes that are healthy tasty and fairly simple to make although a few did take longer than I wishedRecipes we tried in the order that we made themAsparagus and potato hash wow this was good My kids both moaned when I told them what I was making they are not asparagus fans and I was a little disappointed with how many pots and bowls this dirtied and how long it took but results were EXCELLENT Recipe says serves 4 6 Between myself and my two kids there were no leftovers I will definitely make this againSunday Ragu I made this on a Saturday so it was really Saturday Sauce this was surprisingly good It took about 15 hours but I expected that so it was okay We had never tried soy crumbles before I am generally suspicious of anything that pretends to be something else so I was skeptical but they were good I bought the LightLife Smart Ground brand There was a slightly odd sort of too sweet flavor to the sauce I suspect from the fennel but possibly the sage rosemary or bay leaf since none of these are my usual seasoning Recipe says serves 4 6 and we got about 7 servings from it I might make this again if we want a meatless meat saucePasta with lemon and asparagus my daughter isn't crazy about asparagus but she loves lemon with pasta so she chose this It's a bit too lemony and needs something else like a second vegetable but otherwise very good A nice spring meal Recipe says serves 6 and we got about that from it Not sure if I'll make this againFrench Ragout Beans this recipe ended up with a lot of inadvertent substitutions I couldn't find navy beans so I used Northern beans I had oil packed sun dried tomatoes instead of dry so I wasn't able to soak them and I used half red wine half water in place of the soaking water in the pot and the whole thing looked like it needed some GREEN so I tossed in a few handfuls of chopped kale that I had in the freezer I think this was a good addition This was excellent though a bit too much vinegar My only complaint is it's not really a full meal on its own it needs to be served with something I served it with sautéed asparagus and orzo Recipe says serves 4 and we got four servings from it I will definitely make this againRoast Vegetables uesadillaThis was fantastic I never would have picked this recipe to try and I'm so glad my daughter picked it Recipe says it serves 4 and we got 4 uesadillas; total took about an hour to make including assembly chopping roasting and cooking the uesadilla; needs about twice as much cheese as the recipe calls for using just 14 c isn't even enough to hold the uesadilla together We will definitely make this againRoasted vegetables with pastaThis was disappointing though my older daughter liked it I've never roasted tomatoes before so I don't know if I just don't like them this way or if the problem was that we used winter beefsteak tomatoes from the grocery store Recipe said 1 hour took me about 15 hrs; got approx 7 servingsPasta with easy summer sauceThis was uick easy and excellent I made a few substitutions added a zucchini reduced the amount of parsley left out the red onion and sautéed the garlic Next time I'll cut back on the salt too And there will definitely be a next time This was so good even made with grocery store produce in April I can only imagine how good this will be with fresh summer produce; I'll make this again and again This would work well with a variety of early summer vegetables in place of the green beans too summer suash peas spinach or new potatoes would all be great Recipe said 4 6 servings and we got about six servings; the estimated time of 45 minutes was about rightGreens soft polentaThis Was So Good And so easy I left the fennel out because I'm sick of fennel and it seems like all the recipes I try from this book include fennel I will definitely make this again and again Unfortunately I will have to save it for nights when I'm the only one home because no one else liked this Recipe says serves 4 and we got about 25 servings Because I ate so much Moroccan roast vegetablesThumbs up from the whole family A nice combination of vegetables and just the right amount of seasoning now that I've learned to cut back on the salt a little with these recipes It was a little dry and maybe would be good served with a dollop of plain yogurtBlack bean and sweet potato hashVery good we all liked this Served with sour cream and tabascoItalian gratinThis one sounded so great Bread crumbs orzo tomatoes spinach mushrooms parmesan how can you go wrong? Well somehow you CAN go wrong because this was not good much too much liuid left in the dish and the flavors just didn't complement each other I followed the recipe exactly too Fingers crossed that it's better as leftovers now that the orzo has had time to soak up all the juices But out of 11 recipes we've tried this is the only one that was really a failure So at this point I need to say reader I bought the book These recipes have been so consistently excellent and easy to make I just need to own the book I had borrowed from the library to try itAlso I have to note that this cookbook has a recipe for POPCORN Surely everyone knows how to make popcorn?? What's next a recipe for toast?

I've never been a fan of the original Moosewood cookbooks too hippie too bland but this book has a lot of excellent recipes in it with uniue creative ingredients And unlike the Greens cookbooks which I also have most of the recipes are approachable and easy to make even if you're time pressed The tone is still a bit too ex hippie for me but it's still a good cookbook for vegetarian ideas There are some fish recipes in here which I am not offended by but they are balanced by an excellent selection of vegan selections including vegan chocolate desserts that actually sound tasty

This is my favorite of all the Moosewood cookbooks I will warn you that a lot of it is meatless and that some of the things they have recipes for are acuired tastes My nieces and I found this book at Half Prices Books one day and we sat down that evening and put sticky notes on all the things we wanted to try The recipes were fun for us to do together and we learned a lot about different foods I'm sure we did than half the cookbook and only found about 1 or 2 things that we didn't particularly enjoy This is definitely a cookbook you should check outNote There are several recipes for sandwiches in this book Each week we would try one new sandwich recipe and they would take it to school for lunch After a month I had several children in their classes wanting me to adopt them and some teachers and parents asking the same thing haha

This cookbook has vegan gluten free recipes than the other cookbooks I've read My husband and I were both impressed with their diatribe on the worthlessness of uick oats and instant oatmeal so we finally cooked that free sample of steel cut oats we had Moosewood is right steel cut oats are complete worth the 20 min cooking time and not remotely mushy We did not share with the kidsI'm cautious about trying anything too unusual from this cookbook though after making the Savory Congee recipe I followed it exactly and the result was only just okay and the next day much too salty to be edible

I love this cookbook It's not fully vegan and even includes fish but that didn't stop me from buying it as soon as I leafed through the pages

My father sent me this book randomly when I was living in a college dormitory I hadn't heard of Moosewood at the time and dismissed the book as something that looked kind of weird a cookbook about Moose? When I finally moved into a house with a kitchen I pulled out this book to examine it I was surprised to find it was a vegetarian book aww thanks Dad and hey the recipes looked pretty good I've cooked from this book extensively since then It along with Moosewood Sundays and Moosewood Cooks for a Crowd were staples in the kitchens of the student co ops in which I lived Many incredibly delicious meals for 20 50 people were prepared from Moosewood recipes The recipe for baked falafel is one of my favorites and is so fun when multiplied by 7 Sometimes I get fed up with the specialized ingredients that seem to be in every one of the recipes can't you ever just use one type of flour? but the end results are definitely worth the extra effort And of course if you're feeling lazy you can definitely substitute standard ingredients for the 5 different types of flours and grains in any of the recipes I freuently do
