  Vooraleer deze schitterend getekende, ietwat overweldigende, kleurige wereld van de Bondgenoten binnen te treden, is het - wellicht - verstandig om eerst Brecht Evens zelf erover te horen vertellen in
  deze aflevering van de fantastische boekenpodcast van Wim Oosterlinck.
  
  Maar ook zonder die voorkennis wordt je vast en zeker gegrepen door het verhaal van Puer Universalis zoals hij liefkozend door zijn vader genoemd wordt; laat alles los, stap in de schoenen van Puer en laat je meevoeren.
  
  Djeez.... wat zou ik dit verhaal én het geplande vervolg graag vertaald zien worden naar een Virtual Reality app!

  4.5* - Of Brecht Evens ooit nog een keer zal teleurstellen is een vraag die opnieuw niet beantwoord werd. Geniaal op alle gebieden: prenten om uren naar te staren, een verhaal dat je niet loslaat en blijft ronddwalen in je hoofd...
  
  Kan deel 2 morgen al verschijnen, aub?
  
  (Voorlopig blijft ´Panter´ mijn favoriete Evens, maar deel 2 zou wel eens voor een wijziging kunnen zorgen...)

  My first Brecht Evens but certainly not my last. I've been meaning to check out his stuff for ages, given the rave reviews he's been getting on here, but always found his books to be too expensive (gf got this for me as a surprise after I told her I wanted to check his stuff out, while I was cluelessly browsing the store lmao). I see now that they're well worth the price.
  
  This might very well be one of the most gorgeous books I've ever read. Evens mixes styles and techniques seemlessly and expertly. Every page is a new explosion of color and wild paneling. It's absolutely visually arresting.
  
  The story is a weird one. It opens on young Arthur as he tries to drag his catatonic father out of a deep depression. His new passion for drawing finally does the trick, and we witness the start of a new relationship. The problem being, as we quickly start to realize, Arthur's father is most likely clinically paranoid. Out of this he spins a wild adventure that oscillates between depressingly real and hilariously surreal. A story about the bond between a single father and his lone son, about the impact of our education and our experiences on how we see the world. It's a weird one because I was very uncomfortable the entire way through. He drags you into the paranoia of it all until you're not even sure what's real and what's not anymore. It's a fairly long book (almost 300 pages, and it's only part one of two) but it just begs to be read in a single sitting. I had to break it up, because life, and really struggled to get myself out of the groove of his world.
  
  Only thing that kind of left me confused was the ending... And now I have to wait almost a year to find out where the story goes.. Guess I'll catch up on his other books in the mean time !

  This is the first half of what will be a two-part series, so I have to hold off final judgement until the second volume comes out, but thus far it’s shaping up to be an absolutely excellent comic – just as good as the other three Brecht Evens comics that I've read (
  “Panther”,
  “The City of Belgium” and
  “The Making Of”).
  
  This is a hard comic to describe without spoilers. What I can say without giving away too much is that it's about the relationship between a young boy and his widowed father, but it's not nearly as mundane as that makes it sound. It's quite heartbreaking at times, but also full of mystery and intrigue and colourful characters. I finished the volume with very little idea where the story will go in the next volume, and in this case that’s wholly a positive, reflecting the comic’s sheer freewheeling uniqueness.
  
  Fans of the author's other work won't be surprised to hear that the art in this comic is phenomenal, employing familiarly luxurious multicoloured gouache, aquarelle and markers, and eschewing panel borders and realism in favour of a free-flowing, expressionistic approach to visual storytelling. I've said before that I consider Evens one of the absolute masters of the comic medium, and I stand by that as firmly as ever.

  Cette bande-dessinée est extrêmement ambitieuse : par le dessin très original, pour commencer, avec des couleurs éclatantes et une patte graphique reconnaissable, qui joue sur l'abstrait, les formes, les tonalités ; par le propos ensuite, l'histoire volontairement floue, où l'on peine à démêler le fantastique du complotisme, le réel de la divagation...Nous suivons Puer, petit garçon élevé par son père, qui vit en reclus depuis la mort de la mère. L'isolation progressive de ce père dégénère rapidement en complotisme survivaliste, et nous assistons tout au long de ce premier volet aux tentatives de résistance du binôme, contre les “Dirigeants”, groupe secret et surpuissant qui contrôle la planète. L'oeuvre est très intéressante, mais sans doute trop complexe pour moi. Je n'ai pas réussi à saisir où l'auteur voulait nous entraîner, quel était le propos, la morale...mais le deuxième tome me convaincra peut-être !

  Brecht Evens' vaardigheid om driedimensionale ruimtes weer te geven op papier is ongeëvenaard. Elke keer weer verbaas ik mij over elke pagina, en hoe slim alles in elkaar zit. Niet alleen heeft hij talent voor visuele kunsten, maar hij wist ook een herkenbare narratieve stijl te ontwikkelen, iets wat niet elke illustrator gegeven is. Kort gezegd, Brecht Evens has it all. Ik ben alvast super benieuwd om te zien waar deze nieuwe, ambitieuze reeks ons naartoe zal brengen.

  Je suis pas sûr d'avoir vrmt bien compris toute l'histoire mais en tout cas le style graphique est formidable !
  Je sais pas si l'auteur parle en giga métaphore incompréhensible pour faire passer des messages ou si c'est simplement une histoire à hauteur d'enfant, où il ne faut pas chercher des sens particuliers aux dessins et bulles de texte.

  Juste sublime, presque trop. On doit aérer la lecture de ce roman graphique pour digérer la beauté des illustrations goutte à goutte. Brecht Evens nous embarque à nouveau dans son univers si singulier, unique à vrai dire.

  Weird weird weird story about a father and his son against the world, amazing drawings as usual, but still waiting to understand where the characters are going...till now the story was really vague and bizarre.

  A child interprets his father's delusions as invitation to a game belonging to a fantastic world that only they can understand. The story is great and the images are breathtaking. My only problem is the ending, because it wasn't a proper cliffhanger that would make me want to know more, on the contrary, felt like it gave too much information and slowly killed my curiosity for the next volume. The ending should have been less spectacular. Less is more.
