  if Death Note is the neuroses-ridden emo side of teen male fantasy, where betrayal is the norm and relationships exist to be exploited or sacrificed, then Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is its joyous opposite. sweet, empowering, fun-filled, shouty positivity in an energetically paced boys' adventure that always makes sure friendship and optimism stay front and center while sticking to its basic message of Humans, you can do better! plus lots of dick jokes (all of them visual). written as an homage to and a pastiche of classic mecha, TTGL still feels fresh and exciting because it firmly believes in its own message. smart, heartwarming, goofy as fuck. one of my favorite anime.
