A frozen goldfish in a plastic bag.
And a woman afraid she’s losing her grip on reality.
"A Purple Elephant" is a 2,900-word suspense short story about grief and betrayal.

In "The Replacements," a prodigal returns to find that her parents have started a new family, one with no room for her. This disturbing 3,600-word suspense short story is about the lengths to which we'll go to feel like we're wanted, and how we don't always see things the way they really are.

Frozen: Two Suspenseful Short Stories Reviews

I really enjoyed these two short stories. In both, the author pulls the reader in from the very beginning and each had interesting twists in the end. I was only disappointed that there were not more than these two stories in this book, so I look forward to reading more from this author.

Frozen consists of two short stories. "A Purple Elephant" is the story of a marital betrayal told from the victim's viewpoint. In "The Replacements," someone let a seriously mentally ill young woman out way too soon. Disastrous consequences follow. The twist is that it is told from the young woman's viewpoint.

Kennedy blogs and writes books for writers. These two stories are the only fiction she has published to date, although she promises something in 2016. That doesn't mean she's not an accomplished writer. I have nothing all that critical to say about these stories. They set up the reader nicely for a shocking twist at the end, and like most such stories, are built on assumptions that the writer hopes the reader doesn't question before she's pulled the rug out.

Kennedy is probably wise writing books for authors. Making a living writing fiction these days is extremely difficult because the competition is great and the hurdles to get traditionally published get higher every day.

The five stars are for Marcy Kennedy's writing skill. I get the feeling that she whips these little horror stories out with no effort at all. The subject matter is gory. I am more of a 'Little House on the Prairie' sort of guy, but as a want to be writer I read beyond my comfort zone. The first of these short stories was about a wife being betrayed by her husband and best friend by making her think she was crazy, and just before being locked away she sees what they had done but it was too late. Sort of a one flew over the cuckoo's nest sort of thing. A thriller, but I could take it. The second story is about a young girl with a history of mental disease, who is so psycho she murdered, then murdered to correct the first murders because she realized they were a mistake - huge thriller. I did not take this one well, and may have to go seek professional help to get over the trauma. If you like thriller's read Marcy Kennedy's books.

I read Marcy's first story, now entitled "Purple Elephant" as reward for signing up for her writing newsletter. It took my breath away. I was working on my own small collection of short stories at the time. I was impressed with how Marcy jerked me into her story with frozen suspense and finally let me go with a poignant ending that punched me in the gut and left me wanting more. If her other story is any bit as good as the first, I'll read it for sure.
Just finished "The Replacements"...very well written and such a stark story (though a bit brutal and sad).

Well I have only read "Purple" which was offered to Marcy Kennedy's newsletter fans.

This short story was interesting, a mystery based short story. I would like to see Marcy
write a continuing short story to go with this one. This could easily become a series.

It should be noted that this short story is now called A purple elephant.

Looking forward to reading the other short story in this book - The Replacements.
