Orphaned at a young age, Samara is left under the care of her three, horrible brothers. Just when she thinks she cannot take another day of their abuse, a handsome prince offers for her hand in marriage.

Samara’s brothers agree in exchange for a large dowery but on her way to her new kingdom, her carriage is ambushed by Lore, the wicked Prince of Nightshade.

Samara believes that the fae has snatched away her chance at freedom to punish her for her crimes against his kind but punishment is only half of Lore’s plan.

The truth is that the Elven Prince has pined after Samara for seven long years. She is all he can think about—a toxin in his blood. Can the Prince of Nightshade, whose power over poisons rivals none in The Enchanted Forest, manage to find a remedy or will he succumb to her love?

We open on the lovely scene of a young maiden named Samara reliving the memory of going full Darth Vader on a hunky Fae by assisting him in removing his hand from his person. We’re joined shortly thereafter by her 3 ratchet brothers, a sus prince, a saucy fox, and aforementioned uno handed Fae. She almost loses her life A LOT but ofc we find the meaning of love along the way. And they lived happily ever after. Ameneth.

Apples Dipped in Gold is not really hitting the right spot for me. The fairy tale part is OK. But the plot seems..... demure. No complicated plot and not enough drama.

Or it is many me not in the right mood reading this.

When Scarlett writes a book, she puts her whole heart into it. I knew, going into this book, my heart would go through it as well.

This is book two in the Fairy Tale Retelling series. This series follows seven princes, and each prince will have their own book.

This book, follows our wicked Prince Lore of Nightshade, and our sweet and innocent Samara.

Orphaned at a young age, Samara is left under the care of her three brothers. They are… horrible to her. I mean… if you have triggers… be careful going into this book. Because the way she is treated… breaks your heart.

One day when Samara wanders off… to hopefully find peace… a handsome prince offers for her hand in marriage. Her brothers agree in exchange for a large dowery.

On her way to her new kingdom… the Prince of Nightshade ambushes her carriage. Samara believes that the fae prince has snatched her away to punish her for a crime she committed long ago…

What the Prince actually needs help with… is to break his curse… and what Samara doesn’t realize… is the curse he has… is one put on him by Samara herself…

If you love The Cruel Prince, Labyrinth, The Magical Legend Of The Leprechauns, Snow White, A Curse For True Love, Cinderella, fairytales, dark… fairytales, fairytales with spice…you will greedily consume… Apples Dipped In Gold.

Samara reminds me of Cinderella, especially the quote “Have courage, and be kind.”

She has gone through so much, and yet her ability to be kind to others is one of her most admirable qualities. She inspires me to keep my head high and always pick the path of courage and kindness, even when hope feels miles away.

I don’t know how Scarlett does it, because while this book is thoughtful, emotional, and sometimes downright sad. It’s also laugh out loud funny, swoon worthy, scary, whimsical, and epic.

Lore’s nickname for Samara is “Wild One” HELP.
There’s a moment where Samara claims to Lore that she is worthless, and he says “You do not get to determine your worth to me.” And I cried. For a solid minute.

Nobody is perfect in this book, and that’s part of what makes it so enduring. Except for Fox… I love Fox. He’s perfect. Adorable. I love him.

I love this book with my whole heart. This is one of my favorite series of all time. And if you haven’t read the first book, Mountains Made Of Glass, please go read that, and then start Apples Dipped in Gold immediately after.

“You are a gift, you are my dream come true and my greatest wish.”

I hate to even write this because I am such a fan of St. Clair. It is clear that she pours so much time and attention and research into the lore of her books. Her knowledge of classic and not-so-well-known fairytales along with the themes and history in them is always a treat.

This one missed the mark though. The pacing was rushed and multiple times I flipped back thinking I must have missed something. Many moments were convenient and took the easy way out which felt so out of place from her normal writing style. Walking away from this one really disappointed.

Ok I think I liked this one even more than than the first?! There’s just something so endearing about a man who is so in love with her he truly thinks he must be cursed because he doesn’t consider himself worthy of a love like hers. LIKE COME ON.

One thing I really love about this series of Scarlett’s so far is how much it really does read like a fairytale! It brings me back to my youth, and my obsession with fairytales, but with more spice and romance. I’m simply obsessed.

DNF chapter I don’t remember and honestly don’t really care

🚩🚩🚩 call me crazy or maybe I’m just unique like the gorls in this genre but i dont find degradation and torment very sexy. 🤷‍♀️ who woulda thunk! 🚩🚩🚩

I truly and honestly cannot wait for these trope ridden books to die. I miss my PNR books from 5 years ago. You know, the ones that were actually written well and didn’t have to rely on abusing a fictional female character for shits and giggles.

Virginal very young human (or is she? 🤦‍♀️) with some tedious menial “gift” that makes her ✨special✨ Living the life of a stone aged peasant girl making bread or trying to feed her starving family or whatever the author put (even tho she talks like a 2024 teen), while men around her love to abuse her physically and emotionally to ensure she stays in line. Only to fall in love (or was it a forced marriage? Dont know don’t care) with an overpowered fae dude who also likes to abuse her physically and emotionally but his is different because he’s hot. And probably has a big dong.

Yah I’m over these type of overly done tropes. Every author trying to one up each other in how far they can degrade and abuse their FCs and get away with it. Seems like the more ARCs you have, the more you can get away with. 🚩

There are quite a few fairy tales woven together in this narrative, which makes for a fast moving plot. Unfortunately, a good portion of the details introduced are dropped with no explanation making the resolution feel unfinished even for an installment in a series. The dialogue between all characters is also incredibly uncanny and stiff making it very hard to feel immersed in the story.

  • Alesha

This was so much different than book 1. It leaned heavily into many fairytales- well known and pretty obscure. It’s darker and more violent.

I really liked it but it ended pretty abruptly.

There are nods to book 1, which I recommend reading.

The first book in this series was a 5 star read for me, but this one fell a bit flat. It had some intriguing moments and I still read it pretty quickly. However it just felt a bit messy and rushed, which I’m really disappointed about as I have been anticipating this read for a while!

I started this book because I wanted a fun smutty little fairy book after my crazy intense fantasy book because it is important to have balance in life, I should have known this book wouldn't be that after I saw the content warnings about abuse and a suicide hotline number. The book starts out with the FMC, Samara, living with her 3 older brothers who abuse her so she is already not off to the happy start I was hoping for and then she meets this prince who is immediately killed off so it's a good thing I wasn't attached. Of course, after her prince is killed the MMC, Lore, (also a prince, this girl attracts princes what can I say), comes to save her and then says you have to help me break my curse, later to find out his curse is that he is to be in love with Samara and she does not return his love. My guy that is not a curse I feel you are just in love with her, but he believes so intensely that this is a curse after he kisses her and she tells him she loves him, he believes they can not be together because he is still cursed... WHAT ARE YOU ON DUDE??? She loves you and you obviously love her so why are you still on this curse nonsense? And then after they have hooked up he goes I should not have done that because of the curse like Lore stfu I no longer like you then once they have sex he says the stupid line "I am not worthy of her love" I absolutely hate that line like shut up she loves you get over it and be with her why are you acting like a 2010 emo listening to MCR with black eyeliner on. The ending felt a bit rushed as well the whole book was about finding the wishing tree so she can wish away his "curse" and they find the wishing tree and she eats the apple and they battle her brothers all within like 5 pages it could have been more thought out and just 10 pages more. Plus her abuse and trauma isn't fully talked about near the end but I guess it's ok because her brothers are dead and the fox was a human the whole time glad they threw that in at the last page. And one last thing he called her beloved too much he would say it after every sentence he would go “what is it my beloved” even saying “Samara my beloved” it’s a nickname not her freakin title she’s not a lord who owns land no need to add her title after every word.

Whimsical, captivating, and nostalgic. Scarlett st clair is no stranger to researching fairytales and incorporating them all into one story whilst also adding her own spin to each. MMOG was one of my first fairytale retellings and quickly become one of my favourites. The little girl in me who was obsessed with Disney princesses couldn’t get enough of the nostalgia. Scarlett combines the tales of Cinderella and Snow White with a multitude of other Grimm fairytales to create ‘Apples Dipped in Gold’.

We journey through two perspectives, one of a young girl orphaned and abused (both physically and mentally) by her three older brothers, and the other of a Fae prince on a quest to find the wishing tree to end his curse. Samara is both strong-willed and fragile, years of abuse made her fear the consequences of leaving her brothers as well as believing the blame was all hers for anything that went amiss. Lore, fell in love at first sight with a girl who doesn’t know he exists and has been cursed for seven years to love her from afar.

The story takes place over seven days from the moment Lore (and a fox) saves Samara from thieves and she is indebted to him to lift his curse by wishing it away. Their path to the wishing tree is far from easy, filled with nixies, goblins, dryads and other fae-like creatures, whilst also battling their complicated feelings for one another it proves to be as much of an emotional challenge as it is an physical one.

The fairytales retold in this one journey flowed so effortlessly and were so well researched that it felt as if it were apart of one fairytale rather than a combination of many. The incorporation of Lore’s missing hand added a life-like aspect to it that I thought was emotionally personal that the author explains in her notes at the end. Overall the nostalgia this story invoked and the creativity of retelling multiple fairytales into one story was so magically captivating as well as emotional, that I hope many readers give it a chance.

    SPOILER FREE REVIEW

Oh my…. This read was so nostalgic and comforting that I can’t even explain it ✨

Story in itself is rather short and it feels like such a refresher - it had so many parts from our childhood fairytales but at the same time it was new and intriguing 🤩

The plot-line was quite simple and smoothly paced, so it was such a comfort to read. The reading style oH- takes me back to when I was little, reminded me of those old stories that you carry through generations 🥹 It was simple enough to absolutely enjoy the read!

Characters, for such a short story, are quite complicated. Samara works through her issues and struggles throughout the whole book, just as Lore tries to adjust to new reality and changes in his mind. There actually was one point that, for me, felt unfinished in Lore’s character development but it did not dull the overall experience of likeable and relatable characteristics 🫶🏻

All in all, this book is perfect as a palette cleanser as well as a refresher, and should be perfect for a quick enjoyable read that feels both familiar and new ⭐️

I would definitely recommend this to people that are fresh in reading fantasy + spice type of books because this has a perfect balance between both and the whole storytelling is written in a beautiful fairytale language 🥹

Live, laugh, love Lore and Samara ❤️

I need these books to be longer. They’re so good, they’re so quick, they’re so engaging, I need them to be longer cause I need more 😭

I really enjoyed this one but I felt like there was more that could’ve been added to it. Give me a prologue or like a first half of the book to really flesh out this romance story plzzzzz.

But also I love me a good fae story and I need eight more of these books!!

Listen... give me a MMC obsessed to the point of self destruction in the FMC and you'll more than likely get 4 stars out of me, no problem.

Also I'm just really enjoying this series. I'm a Grimm fairytale girlie and I love the original, gory versions so this is right up my alley.

I absolutely love Scarlett St. Clair's writing style. She has a way of making the words perform a movie in my head.

This book wasn't any different it is a beautifully written book! A fairytale retelling with Grimm fairytales mixed with old mythology from different countries. This quick story pulled on my heart strings, I devoured each page. Did I mention the illustrations? The pictures fit in perfectly! Now, I want to be swept away to a magical fairyland and live amongst the forest creatures.

“samara was so used to horror, i did not want to become another monster in her eyes.”

i originally read this on ku when it first released, but decided to do a reread with the paperback! i will say that i loved the experience of reading the paperback much more than reading it on ku, as per usual when i read anything. originally, i rated this book 4 stars, but after reading the paperback, i am altering my rating to 4.5 stars.

i absolutely love samara and lore, and their journey was a tough but necessary one. lore believes he is cursed, and that he only loves samara because of that curse. it’s been seven years since first they met, and he hasn’t been able to stop thinking about her. samara has loved him ever since that day, though lore doesn’t know this. he wrongfully assumes that samara hated him for seven years, and the answers to all of his questions lie within the book. read this to follow samara and lore on an adventure that will have you hooked from the first page!

I can’t believe I’m saying this but I didn’t enjoy this one anywhere near as much as Mountains Made of Glass. I feel like it would have been better as a full length novel but I just couldn’t get on with it.
I felt the main characters were too forced

  • Lisa Able

Woe is me, woe is he, woe is everyone. What a pity fest. Everyone was extremely unlikeable, with the exception of Fox, who was hilarious and made the book worthwhile. Thankfully it was short so I don't feel like I wasted a ton of time on it.

  • Annaliese

Where was the background info on them being in love previously and their previous romance/coming across each other and why he made her a knife??

Why, if he is literally one of the prince’s, was he so over powered by everyone else?

Where was some more stuff about his nightshade powers?

And they just started fucking everywhere?

!!!!!!Who is Friedrich/Fox and why did Scarlett St. Clair make him into such a main character?? And why did he know everything and literally lead them to their happy ending?!!!!

Why did she think she had to stay with her shit dog brothers and why were they soooo awful to her?! Like I understand people that have been abused generally don’t know anything but the abuse so don’t leave the situation but why were her brothers like that?

And the witch was pointless cause all they needed was her eyes and nails anyway so they could’ve just killed her straight away

This book was so short and nothing was explained well it just was skimmed over, the first in the series at least explained things and sorta wrapped it up.

Just so random that as a fae prince he had no objections, no disgust, about being with a mortal woman.
Why did they not end up living in his castle? Where were his subjects if he has his own castle? Why was she so okay with being a mortal and being with him who would live for basically forever but him also saying when she dies he dies so they really only have 50 more years together lol

I’m assuming the next book will be about Cardic and his Nun?

I felt she was such a damsel in distress and she really turned from a timid girly to a sarcastic brave girly in a couple days which is unrealistic

I rate this a 2/5 because I did enjoy it and read it in one night but honestly, compared to the first book, this was so rushed and left almost unfinished? That I just didn’t vibe with it the same

  • Aylin Houle

I have mixed feelings about Apples Dipped In Gold. It definitely kept my interest and I enjoyed the author's attempt at retelling some other famous fairy tales. Even taking some ideas from The Brother's Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen.

I liked the story between Lore and Samara and felt for each character. I wish more of the story was told with them prior to their being in love. More conflict or drama. More action. Which you get more of towards the end of the book.

The tie in with other fairy tales was good and it definitely took you into another world. Some parts just felt more how could this be implemented as well. Instead of an easy flow.

Some of the dialogue could have been different between the characters and maybe a little less profanity. As in most parts it didn't feel organic. Just more to show anger but in a forceful way. At least that's the vibe I got when reading.

It is worth a read and it was fun.
