Blank Canvas (Big Easy, #1) Reviews

Jennifer is a buttoned up professional, trying to reinvent herself after a divorce. She chooses to get a tattoo to signify her new outlook on life. When she meets her big, bad tattoo artist Caliph, can’t help feeling both attracted, and intimidated. Something in each calls to the other, and they chose to see where the attraction leads.

I really enjoyed this novella. Jennifer’s insecurity felt realistic for someone coming out of a long relationship under those circumstances. It was also nice for a heroine to be over 40, attractive, and sexily imperfect. I didn't feel sorry for her, just rooted for her to win. Caliph was a great example of strong hero that though a dominant alpha male, was not douchy at all. This was a complete alpha-hole free zone.

I confess to normally entering shorter books expecting to just "like it". The lower page count of this one couldn't prevent the awesome from breaking through. Since the heroine is a little bit older, this also works for those into cougar themes, which normally isn't my thing by the way.

A middle-aged woman downtrodden by her ex is made to feel like a piece of art by a sexy tattoo-artist dom in this quick and spicy novella introducing a rather unorthodox family. I've had this on my shelf for over five years and was glad for the opportunity to finally pick it up.

Blank Canvas is the first in a series and introduces the first of the Lewis family finding their unorthodox and kinky way to love. Well, at least it puts Caliph on the right path in this happy for now.

Forty year old divorcee, Jennifer makes a new year's resolution to pick herself up and start living like she never lived before when her husband said she wasn't attractive and she was boring (as said by every cheater there is, btw). She can't treat those words like static until her bold first step garners her more than a tattoo. She's about to have a hot and personal one night encounter with a dominant and breath-taking tattoo artist who doesn't want any long-lasting strings attached relationships.

But, soon after Caliph gets the responsive Jen in his bed and she brings him to life as much as he was hoping to make her feel wanted and beautiful. His plans change and he starts to want more and visualizes several encounters, but will his darker needs end up scaring her off?

For a shorter story, this was generously developed in characters and the attention to their sexual chemistry and encounters. It's not a full happily ever after and I appreciate the author didn't try to cram too much into this novella so it paced well.

There was light to moderate BDSM, but Jen is a first-timer so Caliph gives her only a hint of the dom and treats it as an exploration for them both. He's careful with her and really cares that she see herself as he sees her- a vibrant, colorful, and sexual woman. Jen is honest and doesn't play games. I loved how she overcame those negative voices in her head to reach out for what she wanted and reach past the restraint Caliph tried to keep on his emotions. I was grinning when the big moment came and she stood on the edge of choice.

In summary, this was a great start and first encounter to the author writing solo and series. I am definitely curious about the Lewis siblings. I would recommend this for those who enjoy a quick read spicy happy for now BDSM romance.

After her husband walk out on her for another women, Jennifer has spent the last year trying to come to terms with his betrayal. In order to continue to move on, Jennifer decided to get a tattoo and meets tattooist Caliph Lewis. Caliph is attracted to Jennifer and senses the feelings are mutual. When he makes an offer for one night together to let her wild side out, Jennifer takes it. She doesn't expect to want more nor does Caliph but when they are together the heat between them is undeniable. Will one night be enough?

Entertaining story, a quick read that is full throttle from the very beginning. Liked this couple together and definitely interested in reading more from the series.

This short was one of those that takes you away and let’s you enjoy reading without having to think too much. It’s sweet and yet so hot. There’s just enough back story to help you understand the characters and their thinking and yet the storyline wasn’t really that important to me. I liked the characters from the get go and the more I read the more I liked them.
All in all this is a good read that draws you in from the start and lets you ride along with the characters as their story progresses.
Pretty sure this makes no sense to anyone other than me but hey ho lol

Caliph and Jennifer's story was really great. I wanted it to go on and on, but it was short, sexy, hot, and to the point.
Although the story is short, it basically takes place over the course of a week, with the heat turning up on the weekend they spent together, it doesn't leave a cliffhanger nor does it have an abrupt ending.

I'm hoping, since the series is about Caliph and the rest of the Lewis clan, there will be updates about how this couple is faring.

Too short, even for a novella

    Life after divorce.

I've just downloaded this from allromanceebooks as part of their 12 days of Christmas giveaway and after quickly checking the blurb I started reading and I loved it.
I liked both Jennifer and Caliph and for a short book, I know it's over a hundred pages so it's not short short but you know what I mean it's not long anyway the build-up and development is good, it didn't feel rushed although I would have liked more.
Jennifer is at a turning point, she's nearly forty years old, her husband's left and the divorce and his affair has rocked not only her world but her confidence as well. The book opens with Jennifer getting her first ever tattoo, it's not an impulse decision she's carefully thought it through and decided it's the start of her new life a fresh start and Caliph is the tattoo artist she's more than a bit attracted to, she's not looking for a relationship she just wants a bit of colour in her life and since Caliph seems attracted to her as well it's looking good.
Although you could argue this book holds nothing new, there's no drama or twists and turns its a lovely hot read and I loved seeing Jennifer as her world is opened up.

I loved this sexy, quick read! Jennifer is trying to get past boring - the reason her husband said he left her. She's always been quiet, reserved, cautious, but it's time to change - and getting a tattoo is the first step. Caliph is the sexy tattoo artist she's chosen to help take her first step on the wilder side - and she ends up getting even wilder than she ever expected with him. I liked these characters and, even though this was a really short book, I was able to feel their emotion. Their wild weekend together was hot, hot, hot!!

Freeeeeebie on amazon. So I thought, why not? Didn't disappoint.

This felt a lot less like a scene and more like a relationship.

    "Ready to get started?"
She snorted. "Dear God. What have we been doing the past half hour?"

"Just hold tight to me, okay? I won't let you fall."

There was a big difference between needing a man in your life and wanting one.

Review - Jennifer and Caliph meet during a consult for a tattoo she wants to get after her husband divorces her for another woman. She has alot of insecurities but is able to trust him after knowing him for such a short time. I really loved the dynamic between the two characters and was cheering for them to have a relationship beyond the agreed upon weekend. Nice quick read.

  • Charlene

For such a quick read, this one really packed a punch! I'm a sucker for the "older woman finding herself after a divorce with a younger man" trope (if there's such a thing?) and this was a good example of it.

    Hmm.

I liked this story. Thankfully the age difference was never a big issue. Likable characters. The story makes sense. I didn't like the ending. The sex scenes were believable. It was a quick read.

  • Cyn Mistress Kitty

Oh, I loved this story but it was way too short : ( I wanted more of Caliph and Jen.
    What a great series.

Just did a re-read and loved it still.

  • Sharon Ryder Roberts

For me the first part of the novel it was all right, but then the sexy scenes i felt were a bit too much for her first time especially since she was new to bdsm and acted like a frightened little mouse. Always makes me laugh also when some one says they are having a daisy tattoo done, or something else that is mainly "white". After a few months the only ink left will be the outline as white is the first colour to fade. So baring that in mind most tattoo artist avoid using the colour. Also bdsm candles do not produce hot wax, novels like these should have a warning alert - please do not use ordinary candles for wax play.

Jennifer is healing from a failed marriage and taking steps to break out of her shell and become her own person. Her latest step is getting her first tattoo. She's still nervous but tattoo artist Caliph is ready to walk her through and make her feel safe. She was excited about this next step but didn't realize it would lead her to her next, taking a lover. She's attracted to Caliph but isn't quite sure how to do a short term fling. And after a hot weekend with Caliph, is short term what she still wants? A really fun, hot read about a woman rediscovering herself and her sexuality. Great read!

    Awesome

This was one HOT story! I couldn't put it down because the steam just kept rising. I love a good D/S book and this was definitely one of them.

One problem!! It stops at 87% This annoys the heck out if me! I don't want to see 5 other excerpts. I want the book I bought to be a full book. Its confusing when you go to the next page at 87% only to have it be the end. Can we please stop doing this?

  • Kiyomi

This is a quick HOT read! There isn't a lot of story line or in depth plot for this novella, but honestly, I think it was pretty good as it was. Jennifer is served her divorce papers around the end of year holidays. This was the kick in the pants she needed to try and figure out her life. So she decided the first wild, crazy, somewhat spontaneous, not-Jennifer thing she would do was get a tattoo. Insta-lust between Jennifer and tattoo-artist Caliph is magnetic. You know what they are going to have will be intense! And it was! One night was not enough, one weekend was just a teaser. They wanted more.

  • Tammy Kazmierczak

    Wow! Really Hot

I loved Caliph and Jennifer together. Jennifer’s self confidence was decimated by her ex-husband. So when Caliph starts flirting with her while she gets her first tattoo, she finds herself hesitant to accept his advances. Their one night stand turns into so much more and boy, was it hot! Love this series.

Jen realized that she needed to quit wallowing in self pity and start living again. That means taking a walk on the wild side starting with a tattoo. Caliph sees the woman beneath the pain and decides he's the one she needs to hel0 her become the new Jen. A one night stand turns into a weekend and perhaps so much more.

  • Meleeta

Love this older woman younger man

She is recuperating from a divorce and has decided to try new things. While exploring BDSM with her tattoo artist, she is also discovering how to live her life and not remain on the sidelines.
