"Molly. Parenting isn't as cut and dried as that. You don't like or dislike it, as you might like or dislike jazz or cold weather. You are a parent."
Molly takes her job as an adoption caseworker seriously, of course, but things get complicated when she meets Brett, a single man who doesn't want to lose the Korean toddler who's suddenly been left in his care.
I wasn't anticipating any surprises when I picked up Bachelor Father by author Jean C. Gordon. As with many a romance tale, I could tell beforehand how everything would basically turn out. Still, Molly and Brett's story is peppered with some details I wasn't expecting, and the unfolding kept me interested.
One of my favorite aspects of the story is the tension depicted between Molly's commitment to her professional, ethical duty and her growing commitment as a friend, and maybe more than a friend. I got a little lost several times while reading the dialogue, due to a number of missing or misplaced quotation marks, but that didn't lessen my enjoyment of the story.
I'd recommend this romance to readers looking for an easy and fairly quick read that speaks of love, loss, and the enduring significance of family.

BACHELOR FATHER is, as others have said, a sweet romance. The version I read could've been better edited as some words and quotation marks were missing and the point of view switched without warning, leaving me confused. Molly started out as a jerk, an in-your-face social worker who was bound and determined to remove Brett's nephew from his home because Brett was single. But before the halfway mark she made a sudden switch to his side and came up with a rather shocking proposal when the agency she works for supported her previous agenda.
There are some mild "bad" words in this book, and the Lord's name taken in vain, and some misuses of words as well as some obvious errors, such one woman being introduced as his sister (20% through the book), and the next the same woman his friend and lawyer. The characters were rather flat and undeveloped, but it was a decent read. I would not call this a Christian romance, but there is a mention of a cross necklace and getting married in a church and the hero is friends with a pastor. Some more conservative readers will be offended by some of the content.
If you like sweet romances that are not Christian or if you don't care whether they are Christian or not, this is a book to consider. -
Bachelor Father is a wonderful story, and would be especially endearing to the hearts of those who have adopted, or are considering adoption.
I quickly identified with Molly Hennessey . . . in my job, it's easy to see both sides of the story. Most of the time, rules have to be followed explicitly; thankfully, sometimes a supervisor can bend a rule just a little -- enough to help the person on the other side to work things out.
This is the position Brent Cahill is in. He needs a rule bent just enough to work things out.
For many years, I would have loved to adopt . . . but the financial aspect -- and then the lack of a Dad in the home -- was the determining factor in my life. But I wish it had worked out. After all, children are a blessing (at least that's the viewpoint in our home).
Back to the story . . . I can't reveal much else; if I do, I might spoil it for you. But take it from me -- you should read Molly and Brent's story (warning: you might need a tissue or two).
Don’t miss out on this wonderful novel.
Happy Reading! -
I have not read anything from this author until now and all I can say is WOW ,I placed my pre-order in for the next book in the series! This is about a beautiful little Korean boy Jake who has gone through a lot in his two and a half years of life. First he was place in an adoption home, then the couple who where almost ready to sign papers for him died in an accident. Brett Cahill is the single Uncle who was willed guardianship of Jake, but now Korean Child Welfare are making trouble for Brett. Molly Hennesey has been given Susan Green’s case files because Susan has gone on maternity leave , Molly has her own problem with her family. Will Jake be able to bring these two ‘ hurting ‘ people together ? Will Brett get to adopt Jake and how ? I was gifted a copy for an honest review [email protected]

A heartwarming story about two people drawn together by their concern for a young boy who's tragically lost his adoptive parents. Jake was thisclose to having his adoption finalized when his parents are killed in an automobile accident. Despite his bachelorhood, Brett Cahill, the boy's soon-to-be uncle, steps in as parent. But there's a catch: because he's single, the adoption won't be approved by Jake's country of origin. Caseworker Molly Hennessey, touched by Brett's devotion to Jake, offers an unusual solution to their problem. A lovely tale with two very likeable protagonists!

Bachelor Father was a quick inspirational story. Brett was single. He had been made guardian of his sister and brother-in-law’s soon to be adopted Korean son, Jake, following their death. Unfortunately the Korean Welfare did not have single parents in their adoption policy. Molly, the caseworker, is stepping in to intervene. Will Molly bend the rules when she sees the love and bond Brett has formed with Jake? For an inspirational inspired book I was surprised by few of the words in the book. Otherwise, an enjoyable read.

Molly wants every child she places for adoption to have the loving home she did not have. Which to her, includes two parents. When she finds that Jake is now being adopted by Brett, a single dad- she wants to fight to get him in a two parent home until she meets Brett and starts working with him. Suddenly she is walking a thin line to help him out. Comfortable, sweet story about what really makes a family. I was given a copy of this book for my honest review.

Bachelor Father is a sweet read. Brett has been named guardian by his deceased sister and is intent on taking care of her adopted son, Jake. Unfortunately, the adoption process was not complete. In steps social worker, Molly.
The book is great at showing everything is not as black and white as we would wish. Molly has to decide if the rules of adoption outweigh the love and care that Brett shows Jake.
If you want a quick read with a sweet romance, check out Bachelor Father. -
I tried. Sometimes a free read turns out awesomely for me. This one - I shook my head and rolled my eyes too many times. I liked Brett - but by the time Molly, the first-introduced MC, meets him I was not liking her much. Plus I have my own experiences with the IMMENSE governmental infrastructure of DSHS of which CFS is a part. That seriously interfered with my tolerance for the plot (bunnies). Sorry, Ms. Gordon, I liked the idea.

Good clean romance
Social worker, surveyor, adoption, and a trust fund. What more could you want in a book. I loved the premise of this plot, but so much was mentioned and never explained or followed through on. I only gave it 3 stars, because one of my greatest pet peeves is a book with a lot of grammar and spelling errors. -
Brett lost his sister and brother in law and now wanted to adopt his nephew. Molly was assigned the case through the adoption agency. She had concerns about letting a single man adopt but her concern soon vanished. This is a wonderful romantic story with suspense mixed in truly loved it

Sweet read
this was a sweet fast read. It was a very nice read for a cold winter's evening that needed cheer. -
A sweet yet predictable story - maybe I read too much but I'm starting to feel like I can write these myself?

"Bachelor Father" (Upstate NY Book 1) by Jean Gordon
So I had a huge case of insomnia last. For whatever reason I just could not fall asleep. The book I was reading just wasn't cutting it. So I turned to a more mellow read and picked up "Bachelor Father," and am so glad I did!!
This is a sweet read, but also a serious read, and a fun read.
The two main characters are very different in many ways. Brett is a bachelor who is not interested in marriage, but is absolutely committed to adopting and raising his late sister's son. Molly is a social worker who is handling the adoption for Brett. She has grow up in a family that was pretty negligent toward their children. She believes all children would be best placed in a home with a mother and a father.
At first, as a reader and an individual, I had a bit of a rough time with Molly. Jake had been moved from his foster mother to Brett's sister and her husband who had only a few weeks until adoption was finalized before they passed away, and now he is with Jake. Molly believes Jake would be better off placed within a two parent household and really pushes that agenda utilizing "by the book" excuses to potentially have Jake placed in foster care for another couple to potentially adopt him.
Brett feels as if he is being dragged in circles with Molly. She doesn't come right out and explain things and uses the system to back up her "by the book" approach. And he has no idea why she would find all this transition "in the best interest" of Jake.
The more Molly watches Brett with Jake, the more her point of view starts to change and the more she tries to find a solution for Brett...even to go so far as to suggest marriage.
Jean Gordon has written a very engaging read with two main characters that are strong and independent in their thoughts and beliefs, yet who are able to make changes within themselves to truly address what the best interest is for Jake.
With some expected and some not so expected twists and turns, the author has written a true gem of a novel. It is substantive, the characters are well written and relatable as is the story line.
And no, it didn't help me fall asleep. In fact, I stayed up and read it straight through...that's how wonderful it was.
I am definitely looking forward to the next book in the series.
