In this science fiction novel, science meets gay erotica. Forty-eight thousand years ago, the Shusheen, a race of immortal, alien shape-shifters, arrived on Earth. They began studying the life, comparing it to the life on their own planet. They were shocked to find that the dominant species—humans—could be easily killed, unlike themselves. They decided to help them by giving a few members of the Neanderthal subspecies shape-shifting abilities. Led by a Shusheen named Ar-Tan-Bey, and using genetic engineering and Ar-Tan-Bey's own body, they created and gave birth to shape-shifting humans. But not all the Shusheen were trying to merely help humans survive. One of them had a completely different agenda.


Ben is tired of his job and depressed about his life. A strange woman named Ar-Tan-Bey appears to him in a gay bar. She tells him that a man is about to arrive, and that it is important that they become mates. Ben is not aware of his genetic heritage and has no idea what she means by 'mates'. Moments later, Ben meets Jake and there is instant attraction. Jake understands why, because he was raised as a Vin-Ta shape-shifter, but Ben is mystified by the intense desire he feels for Jake. Ben soon discovers that, while Jake is his mate, Ben is not the same kind of shape-shifter as Jake. He learns that the Shusheen created three shape-shifting races on Earth, using the three human subspecies they encountered. He also is shocked to discover that one of the Shusheen, Ar-Tan-Bey, is trapped inside his body with him—and she needs Ben and Jake's help.
