While the interviews were gathered as part of an extensive research project for the author’s 2012 book, Selling Sex Overseas , the full accounts are published here for the first time. The women describe, in their own words, what motivated them to leave China to work in the sex trade abroad, how much they earn, what hardships they face, and what they hope for in the future.
Going Down to the Sea: Chinese Sex Workers Abroad Reviews
-
What a book — it takes you through the individual journeys of women from whom we rarely hear: Chinese sex workers abroad. I liked that Professor Chin's voice doesn't overshadow that of the women he interviewed and that they had the opportunity to share their stories with an audience who may have come with preconceptions of the nature of their work. It was a fast read, though not an easy one — I had to put down the book at times to process what they had gone through fully.
After finishing this book, I developed an even more intense dislike of men. Even if that's an experience you want to shy away from, I would question WHY and still read this book because the fact remains that people can be exploitative and horrid, and it's about time we face the truth.
