We Are Dust and Shadow Reviews

James Ward Kirk has edited a fine anthology of horror poetry, short-short stories, and longer stories on the theme, "What happens when we die?" What is fascinating is the diversity of speculations about the afterlife in the stories--and their creepiness. As such, most character's fates, though not all are . . . negative, bad, horrid, terrifying, etc. Some stories present a Christian afterlife; others Buddhist; others more traditional reincarnation; others Lovecraftean. All leave the reader with a feeling of horror, awe, and/or that hint of a chill that stays behind long after the reader finishes the story.
Most of the poetry is quite good; one poem had some punctuation errors, and some poems were weaker than the better poems, but that situation often occurs in anthologies. The best poems carry the reader's emotions into a realm of horror and awe when the poem peels off the layers of the unknown surrounding death to reveal the raw reality underneath. I highly recommend this book to any fan of the horror genre and to other readers interested in speculative fiction on life after death.
[Disclaimer: I do have a story, "Earnest Expectations" in the anthology; I hope the reader finds it sufficiently jarring]. -
As Expected ... More than Expected ...
You can count on James Ward Kirk for an all-star TOC lineup and writing that will scare you ... in the best way possible. Poetry and stories that will make readers get up and turn on the lights ... if they dared turn them off in the first place! I really enjoyed the amount of poetry in this collection!! Readers can savor these pieces a bite at a time or simply devour the entire book ... gasping for air ... the way I did. Either way, get cozy and enjoy!
