The ending ceremony marks the end of a citizen's useful life. For all except the High Castes there in no exception, no appeal.

In the Holy City State of Providence, the Elders' regime shows no mercy to the newborn, allows no love, no grieving, no emotional attachment. It would be surprising if it treated its older citizens with respect. There are no surprises in Providence.

Enders is the story of a couple in their forties who have reached the end of their usefulness. Joshua and Antu are a typical couple who have lived all their adult lives together and still barely know one another. But even in Providence it is never too late to learn to love. And sometimes, even in Providence, the ending might not be exactly what everyone expects.

Believing themselves to be the sole survivors of an apocalyptic fate, the people of Providence labor their days away under their crystal dome. Watched by demons from without and near-demonic tyrants from within, the common folk live their lives in a daze of drudgery and cheerlessness. Who can say which is better–to end a fruitless, meaningless life, or to go on living and hoping something better will come along?

This short story tells the tales of a married couple, Joshua and Antu, who find out, way too late in their lives, that they honestly do love each other. Too late, because they have reached the age where they have come to the end of their usefulness, as far as the rulers of Providence are concerned. They sigh, and await the inevitable visit--the Black Boys are coming.

The people fear the Black Boys and the Pure Ones–midnight visitors that steal away any citizen who is too outspoken, or too old, or too…anything. In this way, the lawmaking Elite quell any hope or trust, making mindless workers of its citizens.

Antu and Joshua, however, find their fates changed by one thing--friendship. They are herded into a place with others of their age, and discover that their loyalty to each other far surpasses any fear they may have had of those who have bullied them into this place.

It is all too true–even though it cannot be publicly expressed and is indeed missing in a great many places, love and friendship are starting to put holes in the fabric of the society that the demons (in the guise of the law) have put up in the great city of Providence.

If there is anything I like more than Ms. Dougherty’s “The Dark Citadel”, it would be the short stories she writes as tangents from the main series. Every citizen of Providence, drab though his or her life may be, has a story to tell, and courage enough to carry out dreams that cannot be allowed expression. These two stories end on a very positive note, because the Green Woman is returning.

And I’ll be continuing to read each story, large or small, until she is victorious.

This may be a short story, one of several short tasters for the main event, 'The Green Woman' series, but what it lacks in length it more than makes up for in intensity and emotion. My blood is still singing in the grip of the tale even as I write this review.
Jane Dougherty has the ability to pull the reader very quickly into the world she has created and make them feel involved up to their ears in it.

Enders was also a really good book and a great ending to this two book series. This book unlocked mysteries in such o and twisted ways that made the book so much better. one of the many examples is that the old-man is really a starter in his teens and he was only in Blake's body to spy on her when he fell in love with her. Also the old-man like Callie the main character hated the idea of renting bodies and was really working to stop it. Then the-old man really known as Hyden worked together with Callie and took down the true threat Hyen's father Brokman. This book was really good and a great end to the series.
