Great portraits go beyond a mere record of a face. They reveal one of the millions of intimate human moments that make up a life. In Beyond Portraiture, renowned photographer Bryan Peterson shows how to spot those “ah-ha!” moments and capture them forever. A teary child...old people laughing together...a smiling girl with big, big hair. Everyone remember pictures like these, usually taken by a mother, a father, a friend holding a camera, forever preserving small yet revealing vignettes of our personal histories. But we always relied on pure luck and chance to catch those moments. Peterson’s approach explains what makes a photo memorable, how to spot the universal themes that everyone can identify with, and how to use lighting, setting, and exposure to reveal the wonder and the joy of everyday moments. Beyond Portraiture makes it easy to create indelible memories with light and shadow.

This is a very solid book for anyone with any type of photographic experiece. It starts off with tips on getting location portraits from "natives" and working with models. Mid book you get a brief overview on technique and how to achieve great shots. The final section covers digitally altering your images. This is a high level discussion with step by step for photoshop. If you have some digi photo experience it will provide great tips and step by step. A great addition to any photographers library.

Bryan covered the basic elements of people portrait photography with distinctive and descriptive photos of his own.

He started with understanding people so to work with people, continued with utilizing light - front/side/back/Dappled/Diffused, then highlighted composition skills - scale/background/fillup/vertical/ruleofthird/etc, at least ended with simple photo editing techniques.

I recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn or appreciate people portrait, maybe as a beginner.

As I took it up to read the book today, I realised that the at least a part of the evolution of my portraiture can be attributed to this book.

The book is true to it's title. It is light on text, but has a lot of photographs whose captions fully explain the point. I've come away with a lot of creative ideas from this book, which means that the book is a successful one.

I know almost nothing about photography, but I find the psychological side of it very interesting. At least now I don't have enough interest to start learning all the necessary technical stuff to try photo shoots myself. Nevertheless I liked this book a lot of. I liked the stories behind the photos. Bryan Peterson's story how he started taking pictures of people was very inspiring. I actually learnt a lot of myself about what type of people pictures I like and what does it say about me and how would I like to be seen in my "dream photo". The author gave initiative for these thoughts, and o'boy was mind on fire.

I can't review if this a good guide for photography, but I found it very entertaining and interesting to read.

An excellent general book on taking photo portraits of people. Fabulous photos and helpful information to get amateur photographers started in taking good shots of people, with suggestions of where to go for more detailed information on specific topics, such as lighting, communication, etc.

Dobra książka o fotografii portretowej, można się dowiedzieć sporo rzeczy, zarówno z zakresu techniki robienia zdjęć, kreacji kadru, jak i psychologicznych aspektach interakcji z modelem/modelką. Polecam!
