Demons are dangerous things. They inflame your insecurities, turn your weaknesses against you, and whisper their thoughts into your ears in the darkness. The Vatican wants them locked up, or banished back to Hell. Short on priests and long on money, they’ve had to resort to paying bounties to keep things under control. That means looking outside of the faithful, to mercenaries like Cade Crowley.

Doors to Nowhere collects short stories #3 through #5 of the Cade Crowley, Demon Hunter Series.

Doors to Nowhere: The Vatican has a problem, and it wants it swept under the rug. A prominent member of the Knights of Columbus has sold his soul, and the demon's come to collect. Now he's holed up in his mansion, and if Cade wants his bounty, he has to find him before the demon does.

Gospel of Gold and Guilt: Cade needs money, and fast. He's run up gambling debts that he'll never be able to pay, and has to turn to bounties from outside the Vatican: from a television preacher with a prodigal son, possessed by a demon that's made him run wild.

Fortune's Haze: A club of psychics is losing its customers to ill fortunes. First it was just divorces and bankruptcies, but now it's murder. They suspect a demon, and they've called in Cade, who has to find it before the next fortune gets told.

Three short stories in one book. This book continues the story of Cade Crowley, demon hunter.

    DOORS TO NOWHERE

Cade is hired to quietly catch a demon that is coming to collect a millionaire Knight of Columbus's soul. The millionaire sold his soul for his fortune, but because the Order is closely tied to the church, it is quite the embarrassment. Should be a straightforward bounty, but Cade is teamed with a fresh-faced priest straight out of seminary and the house that millionaire has sealed himself up in is reminiscent of the Winchester Mystery House and full of traps!

By far, this has been my favorite Cade Crowley story so far! I wish it had been longer and more involved, it sure could have been!

    GOSPEL OF GOLD AND GUILT

In this story, Cade is sent to a glamorous and gilded church. Cade doesn't quite know why he is there to begin with, but his mission becomes apparent when he is sent to a strip club frequented by the pastor's son. As it turns out, a guilt-demon can work both ways and as Cade discovers, some can even propagate!

A decent story, well written and interesting, but didn't quite pack the punch I have come to expect from Cade's adventures.

    FORTUNE'S HAZE

Start with a bunch of rich, but crazy old ladies who think they are psychic, add some humans who are easily manipulated, and add yet another psychic whose predictions seem to be accurate but harbor dark results, and you've got a powder keg of misfortune! Cade figures out what's really going on, but he needs to stop daydreaming about money he'll never see long enough to catch his demon! Unfortunately for Cade, someone else also wants this demon!

I liked the Phang angle and I would have liked to have seen him fall prey to the demon. His arrogance needed a blow of reality!
