This six-session Bible study for all students is based on Jefferson Bethke’s book by the same name. In this video-enhanced study, Bethke will help students understand that following Jesus isn’t about rules-based religion, which only leaves you empty and unsatisfied. They will see that freedom and true joy is only found in the grace of Jesus and resting in a relationship with Him.
Jefferson Bethke has a compelling story of overcoming a painful childhood of poverty and a broken home, and this gives him a unique perspective on the grace of God and the work of Jesus in his life and the lives of others. It's this perspective that has catapulted him into the national conversation regarding religion and spirituality, allowing his message to connect at a heart level with an audience ranging from atheists to nationally recognized religious leaders.

Youtube sensation overnight. Skeptical. Watched the video. Won over.

I have heard much about Jeff Bethke and his “poem” on youtube. I finally got around to checking it out and I was so impressed. I thought that it was awesome to see someone who really, REALLY gets it! Still, good at poetry and making videos, not sure if this book will be full of filler to ride the waves of fame.

Absolutely not. This is one of THE BEST “Christian Living” books I have read (well, technically listened to as I drove to visit my parents in NY). This book is full of so many truths and an incredible insight into God’s heart. I don’t care what stage of life you are in, or where you are in your walk with God. Anyone can get something out of this book. I try to live my life “to the glory of God”. I get what he’s saying, but sometimes it just takes hearing it again, and in a different way, to remind you of the truth.

Please pick up a copy of this book! It is absolutely powerful and full of the SIMPLICITY of being a Christian. I am not saying that Christianity is easy, I am saying that we don’t have to do anything besides surrender to Him because we aren’t the pursuers, we are the pursued.

Thank you, netgalley, for getting this book to me. As always, this is my honest opinion. Here’s to many more!

Excellent and well written. I recommend for believers and unbelievers. His writing is non-technical but biblical. He gets straight to the point without extra. Put your focus on Jesus NOT religion! When I first became a believer, I got caught up in all the religion; thinking that the more religion I was (following the rules, traditions, protocols of a church/pastor) the better I would be in my standing with our Father. If I worked hard enough, had enough faith...but guess what? I could never measure up and kept falling, failing, stumbling and then I'd feel bad, guilty, perhaps i really wasn't a Christ follower, maybe Christ wasn't in me...Through a couple commentaries and bible studies I began to see the error. The problem. I wasn't focused on Jesus and what HE DID but on what I thought I COULD DO! That's what this book is about; What religion tells us and what Jesus tells us. I choose Jesus.

He isn't telling us to not go to church. He's not telling us that "all" religion is bad, but there's a difference in God's religion and man made religion. He brings up so many great points regarding the bondages we hold ourselves in that are man made, but don't think about the sins we commit. We are contradictory in what we judge bad/good - Like why is homosexuality the one ( of many many sins mentioned in the bible) that Christians get worked up about and yet divorce is a huge part of our society. That's a sin mentioned many times over in the bible, but no protests, no laws...Abortion??? Pornography? Gambling? Getting drunk??? Why does homosexuality carry so much weight in the eyes of man, but in God's eye it's a sin as all the other sins. We don't think twice about lying, cheating, being greedy...Thank goodness, God weighs my sins and not man because we're fickle in what we choose to condemn. Again, excellent book. I highly recommend. Will make you think (if you're open minded). Some of you may be too religious to get it.

I love his honesty about how the church often reacts to those outside, but also how he stresses the importance of embracing the church and building it into a community of people who walk through the difficult times of life together.

Great read! Bethke spoke about truth, church and ministry in ways I've never heard and made great points I've never thought of.

This is an uplifting view of the teachings of Christ compared to what we (mankind) has made of His teachings. The author seems to beg the reader to free himself from the confines of religion and pay attention only to the words and deeds of Jesus Christ as SAVIOR. Unfortunately just as the author successfully does this he seems contradict his own statements in more than a couple of places toward the end of the book. Christ came to be that bridge between Almighty God and His fallen creation. He loves unconditionally... Not without consequences but certainly unconditionally. That's the strongest message.

    Very Good.

Read on Audio - not a "leader guide" but I couldn't find the regular book on here.

  • Annette Goodall

He articulates how our life with Jesus is not segregated into secular and spiritual but should be one life.
