A Spanish Shipwreck on Australia's East Coast 200 Years before Captain Cook discovered Australia
This it the true story of one of Australia's most enduring maritime mysteries, an ancient shipwreck lost deep in the snake infested 18 Mile Swamp on Stradbroke Island. Known to the Aborigines for hundreds of years it was first shown to white settlers in the 1870s but as time passed the location was forgotten. Aboriginal tradition has it that the remains were from a lost Spanish or Portugese expedition; the survivors of which were accepted and integrated into the Aboriginal people's society. This book is the result of more than 20 years research by archaeologist and historian Greg Jefferys and includes numerous extensive oral histories related to the galleon legend from Aboriginal and European sources. It includes the reports of people who found the shipwreck in the 19th and early part of the 20th century as well as information passed on to the author by Aboriginal people of Stradbroke Island. It also lists artefacts that have been taken from the wreck over the years. An interesting addition to the historical and archaeological material is created by using the various accounts and records to create an exciting fictionalised account of the shipwreck. This is the only book to completely document the history and archaeology of the Stradbroke Island Galleon. Greg Jefferys has a degree in Archaeology and a Masters Degree in History.
