Mary Sue is alive and well in Erie Pennsylvania. She is a pediatric nurse-turned beloved children’s author and is now a YA author. She has a foundation that donates to children in need.
At 15 she fell pregnant and at 16, with her parent’s support, she gave her daughter up for adoption.
The missing daughter has been her obsession ever since. Heroine lives alone with a hope chest from her great-grandmother. In it she puts memorabilia away for her daughter. Including the story of her other great-grandmother in Ireland who sent her five year-old son away to her sister in Ireland so he could have a better life.
Touching, isn’t it? Sacrifice. Love. Longing.
I was captivated until I heard the same damn story over and over again.
There was also a friends-to-lovers side story that was less than satisfying.

When the story opens, on the first day of school, her daughter is a freshman in high school – somewhere.
So yeah – not my cuppa. I read romance but I’m not remotely sentimental and I’m a hard sell when it comes to “perfect” characters who do the right thing all the time. The problem is that the heroine isn’t perfect, but no one sees that but the OW who is the only character that doesn’t adore her.
Here are my problem with the main character as a romance heroine:
She encroached on the hero’s relationship with the OW, calling him whenever she needed something, inviting him over without the OW, etc. . . All in the name of “friendship.” Ironically, she was such a good “friend” that she never told the hero about her biggest obsession – her daughter. She went into a sexual, permanent relationship (hero sold his house) without ever telling him about her stance on children. She strung the OM out for two years, knowing she felt nothing for him.
Okay, so the romance fell flat and that’s okay. The heart of this story was mother love and sacrifice.
That was well done, but repetitious as I said (repeatedly LOL). I’ve never read a story with so many speeches – the heroine gives a speech to her foundation, her mother gives a speech praising her daughter, her friend gives a speech to her students praising the heroine, and finally there is the graduation speech. This felt very cinematic and contrived.
Speaking of contrived, the first person narration was clunky. The heroine has to describe her house to herself, and her untidy hair, and her casual way of dressing. It worked because heroine was a writer and starring in her own drama, but I think it added to my feeling of manipulation.
And that’s probably the best way to underscore my problems with this story. I felt manipulated by all the perfect people doing perfect things, perfectly.
But don’t let me stop you from reading this. There are some lovely passages – esp. at the beginning. The Erie Pennsylvania setting was a nice change. -

Uzun zamandır hiçbir kitap beni bu kadar şaşırtmamıştı sanırım. İndirimde görünce, en kötü ortalama bir chick-lit çıkar diyerek aldığım bir kitaptı ama ne ortalama çıktı, ne chick-lit. Bir kitap hakkında anca bu kadar yanılabilirdim. Arka kapağı okuduğumda, kitabın içinde saklı hazineden hiçbir şey anlamamışım meğerse. Çünkü Unutma Beni hayatımda okuduğum en naif, en kırılgan kitaplardan biriydi.
Sürekli şaşırtan, merak ettiren olayların, çok değişik özelliklere sahip muhteşem kusursuz karakterlerin ya da keyifle okuduğum klişelerin hiçbiri bu kitaba uğramamıştı. Konunun merkezinde, kendi halinde, evden çalışan bir yazar olan Piper, Piper’ın yan evine yeni taşınan komşusu Edward (Ned) ve Piper’ın yıllar önce evlatlık verdiği kızına yazdığı günlük vardı. Bana göre kitabın baş kahramanı bu günlüktü, çünkü Piper’ın satırları bu günlükle içime işledi.
Piper 31 yaşında bir yazar, hemşire ve çok ciddi bir yardım gönüllüsüydü. 15 yaşında hamile kalmış ve 16 yaşında doğurduğu kızını sadece bir saat gördükten sonra evlatlık vermişti. Bundan sonrasında da bütün hayatı asla görmediği kızıyla dolu geçmişti. Piper’a hayran kaldım, aşık oldum. Keşke gerçek bir karakter olsa da gidip sarılsam dedirtti bana. Hem güçlü hem kırılgan, hem koruyucu hem korunmaya muhtaç oluşu çok hoşuma gitti. Yaşadığı endişeleri, iniş-çıkışlarını, hayallerini, umutlarını çok güzel yansıtmıştı.
Ned, hiçbir abartısı olmayan, sade ama kusursuz bir karakter oldu benim için. En başından beri her konuya yaklaşımına, ölçülü ve saygılı ama aynı zamanda samimi oluşuna bayıldım. Özellikle gördüğü ilk zorlukta kaçmayarak, aksine üstüne gidip sevdiği kadın için, istediğinin farkında olmadığı şeyleri ayaklarının altına sermesine bayıldım. Piper’ı, kendisini tanıdığından daha iyi tanıdı, hak ettiğini fark etmediği sevgiyi sonuna kadar hissettirdi. Bazı erkek karakterler çok baskın, çok yakışıklı, çok zengin, çok kibirli, çok edepsiz ya da çok mükemmel olmasıyla aklımızda kalır. Ned, bu özelliklerin hiçbirini taşımasa da sadeliği, naifliği ve sevgisiyle uzun zaman aklımda kalacak bir karakter oldu.
260 sayfalık, kısacık bir kitabın bana bu kadar çok duyguyu yaşatmasına hazır değildim açıkçası. 4 yıllık bir zamanı kapsayan Piper’ın ağzından okuduğum gündelik yaşantı bölümlerinin çok hızlı ilerlememesine, herhangi bir ilginç olay olmamasına rağmen hiç sıkılmadan okudum. Piper’ın günlüğe yazdıkları ya da gün içinde yaşadığı duyguları anlattığı yerler beni çok duygulandırdı. Bazı yerlerde gözlerim doldu ta ki son bölüme kadar. Son bölümde Piper mı daha çok ağladı ben mi daha çok ağladım, bilemiyorum. Yazar, o anki duyguları, aşırıya kaçmadan, çok fazla dram yaratmadan, sadece hüzünlü bir güzellikle, muhteşem yazmıştı. Hem mutluluktan hem üzüntüden, hem yaşanamayanların acısından hem bundan sonra yaşayabileceği günlerin sevincinden iki göz iki çeşme ağlattı.
Kısa bir mola vermek istediğinizde, hiçbir beklentiye girmeden, içinizi hem titreten hem ısıtan, aile, arkadaşlık ve aşk üzerine, hüzünlü, sıcacık, naif bir hikaye okumak isterseniz mutlaka tavsiye ederim.
Her şeyden önce bir kadının, bir trajediden nasıl harikalar yaratabileceğine, kendi çapında bir sürü insana dokunabileceğine, bazen verilen kararların kendi hayatımız dışında bir başka insanların da hayatını iyi ya da kötü etkileyebileceğine, bazen de aşkın çok yakınınızda olduğuna şahit olmuş olacaksınız. Bence hiç tereddüt etmeden bu naif kitabı okuyun. Benim tekrar tekrar okuyacağım bir kitap oldu. -
💖Bazen kendimle kral kelebekleri arasında bir benzerlik görüyorum. Seni kaybetmek acıydı ama beni zehirlemek yerine bana bir amaç verdi. Hemşire olarak başladım, kozamdan dışarı yazar olarak çıktım.
Belki de insanlar daha pek çok açıdan kral kelebeklerine benziyorlardır. Belki de sürekli olarak krizalit haline gelip bambaşka bir şey olarak dışarı çıkıyoruzdur.
Belki hayatlarımızı “olarak” ve “dönüşerek” yaşıyoruzdur.
Belki de her an yepyeni bir şeye dönüşme sürecindeyizdir.
Uzun zamandır böyle bir oturuşta bir kitabı bitirmemiştim, o kadar iyi geldi ki... anlatamam! Kitabın öyle sarıp sarmalayan bir hikayesi vardı ki, zaten aksi de mümkün olmazmış.
Kitaptan bahsedecek olursam; 15 yaşında anne olan ve kızından ayrılmak zorunda kalan Piper bir süre hemşirelik yaptıktan sonra gerçek işini buluyor; kendini yazarlığa ve yardım etkinliklerine adıyor. Yardıma muhtaç olan her çocuğu kendi çocuğu yerine koyuyor ve onlar için bağış geceleri düzenliyor. Bir gün yine verandasında kitabını yazarken yeni taşınan komşusu Ned ile tanışıyor ve hikayemiz böyle başlıyor.
💖Yine o günlerden biri mi?” Hâlâ elimde tuttuğum deftere baktı gözucuyla.
“Nasıl yani?” diye sordum.
“Dizüstü bilgisayarında ne zaman çalışsan, yüzünde güller açıyor. Bazen, yemin ederim ki klavyenden dışarı kelebekler süzülüyor. Fakat ona karaladığın günlerde öyle... olmuyorsun.” Ben daha karşı çıkamadan, elini kaldırdı. “Oraya her ne yazıyorsan, bana ayı tuzağına yakalanan adamı çağrıştırıyor.”
İşte bu, daha önce hiç duymadığım bir kıyaslamaydı. Açıkçası, günlüklerin ve ayı tuzaklarının birbiriyle ne gibi bir bağlantısı olabileceği hakkında hiçbir fikrim yoktu. “Efendim?”

Neden en son kısmı en başta anlayamamıştım? Çok daha önce anlamam gerekirdi sanki.
Josiah ise bu gerçeğin yüzdeki burun kadar bariz olduğunu söyledi.
Bu konuda çok düşündüm; anlamamıştım çünkü o benim bir parçamdı. Pip onunla henüz tanışmamışken bile benim bir parçamdı. Onu fark etmenin şokunu yaşamamıştım. İşte orada, buldum onu dediğim bir an da olmamıştı.
O her zaman benim bir parçam olmuştu, bunu sonunda anlayabildiğim zaman, tam olarak ne anlama geldiğini de anlamıştım. Hayatımdaki herhangi bir boşluğu doldurmamıştı; çünkü orası zaten her zaman ona aitti.

Ned ise... Nasıl anlatsam gerçekten bilmiyorum. Öyle ince, öyle anlayışlıydı ki... ve bu halleri öyle doğal, öyle zorlamasızdı ki... uzun süredir böyle bir karakteri okumamıştım. Çabasızca mükemmeldi diyebilirim. Bu kadar sade ama bu kadar harika bir karakteri yazdığı için yazara hayran kaldım diyebilirim. Ayrıca öyle güzel seven, duygularına öyle güzel sahip çıkan bir adamdı ki... bu aşamada elbette ona bayılmaktan başka bir seçeneğim kalmamıştı.🙊 Ned’e olan övgülerimi daha da devam ettirebilirim, gerçekten, ama ne olur siz okuyup kendiniz görün. Eminim bana hak vereceksiniz.
Ayrıca yazarın artık gerçekten bıktığımız klişelere hiç gerek duymadan kitabı yazmış olması en sevdiğim şeylerden biriydi diyebilirim. Öyle karakterler arasında aşılamayan engeller, yanlış anlaşılmalar, yersiz ayrılıklar vs. bu kitapta asla yok. Bu klişeler olmadan da harika bir aşk hikayesinin olabileceğinin kanıtıydı adeta.💖 Kitapta hoşlanmadığım tek kısma gelecek olursak, kesinlikle epilog olmaması derim. Bence biraz daha ilerisini görebilseydik ya da kitaptaki bazı olayları bir de Ned’in bakışından okuyabilseydik harika olacaktı.

Çok etkileyici, bir o kadar dokunaklı bir hikaye. Gerçekten çok güzel yazılmış, çok güzel çevrilmiş bir kitap. Dün akşam başladım ve bitirene kadar kitap aklımdan çıkmadı. Son kısımları gözlerim dolu dolu okudum ve yazara adeta hayran kaldım. Bir sonraki kitabını dört gözle bekliyor olacağım sevgili Nemesis.

Carry Her Heart by Holly Jacobs is a 2015 Montlake publication. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Do not read this book without a box of tissues by your side!! No, this is not a tearjerker with a sad ending, but it is a very emotional story, but also a deeply moving and inspirational one as well.
Set in Erie with it's pronounced seasons and weather changes, Piper writes her children's and YA novels outdoors when she can, watching the neighborhood children, enjoying the warmth and sunshine. On one such day she meets her new neighbor, Ned. As seasons change and time passes, Ned and Piper forge a very close bond, much to the chagrin of his high maintenance girlfriend.
What no one knows is that Piper once had to make the most difficult decision a young woman can be faced with, and it has deeply, and profoundly effected her throughout her adult life.
When Piper feels the need to visit with the child she gave up for adoption as a teenager, she writes to her in a journal, hoping that someday 'Amanda' will have the chance to read it. These deeply personal essays to her daughter describe the changing seasons of nature, but also the changing seasons of life- Piper's life, Ned's and of course, Amanda's.
Piper is a character I felt close to because she was so open about her feelings via the journal she writes. Sometimes I felt she was lying to herself or trying hard not to admit feelings she had because they were too painful or too scary. Deep in her heart she is hurting for the loss of her child, although she still firmly believes she did the right thing by her, giving Amanda the ultimate gift of love. But, this is not all Piper does in the way of giving of herself and helping others. But, all the does, every single thing, from writing to “Amanda's Kitchen” to the journal to how she approached her relationships with men all revolves around Amanda.
Ned's character was harder for me to warm up to because he was involved with a shallow, jealous woman and he continued to live a double life , one in which he maintained a friendship with Piper and one in which he is seemingly oblivious to his hateful, cold, girlfriend and her treatment of Piper. I did warm up to him slowly toward the middle of the book, but I never dreamed this easy going, nice guy whose personality was kind of low key, and even plain at times, would do something so beautiful and meaningful for Piper.
I do warn any of you contemporary romance readers out there, that this book is firmly in a women's fiction or chick lit category but with romantic elements. This is not an angsty, hot and steamy romance filled with conflict. The romance is subtle, and is based on a firm friendship that develops into something deeper slowly over time. I will admit though, even I got a little frustrated by the pace sometimes, but I urge you to exercise patience because good things do come to those who wait. Believe me the outcome of this book will make all the painstakingly slow movements up to that point worth it and then some. This is what real true love looks like... and romantic? You betcha! That Ned sure turned out to have a lot more character than I gave him credit for. If Piper gave Amanda the ultimate gift of love, then it could be said that Ned gave Piper that same gift. I am betting no one reads the last chapter of this book without choking up. Good stuff! Highly recommend!! -
WOW. Very well done. Very touching. I have this categorized under romance, but it's so much more. It's way too serious and introspective to be put under chick lit. I would be doing the author a disservice.
This is an incredible story about the power of love. -

Oh, how I adored this book! The ending was beautifully sweet, made me cry, and left enough questions open to make it not too painfully cliche.
Piper is an author, and any reader who's ever wanted to write will likely fall in love with her. She's got a lot of personality, and while she's pretty introverted, she's also headstrong and excitable. Reading about her, I feel excited when she does; her peppiness is contagious and makes me happy. She worries about being selfish, but is one of those genuinely good people.
Ned was a little on the bland side for a character--while Piper was delightfully quirky, he really didn't have much personality. He becomes more interesting in relation to other characters, such as the girl he dates and his coworker. People like Coop, Piper's best friend, are fun to read about, as are her parents. Jacobs has created a very vibrant community around Piper--I even felt connected to her elderly neighbour and the lady who sold her a dog.
The romance is more of a subplot to this book, which is more about Piper dealing with a decision she made years ago to put her daughter up for adoption. Despite this, the romance is very sweet and poignant, and while I would have liked to see a little more, there wasn't much more necessary.
The ending did border on cliche, but wasn't overly so. It left some questions open, but not so many that I was angry. I was immensely satisfied by reading this book and I really enjoyed seeing Piper grow.

Sevgi , aşk , arkadaşlık ve ruh eşi kavramına yeni bir bakış açısı ile sunan bir kitap olmuş . Piper ile Ned arasındaki uyum çok tatlıydı .. iki farklı insanın birbirini hiç çaba göstermeden anlamaları ve bu doğallıkları okuyucuyu yakalayan en önemli noktalardan biri, sonu benim sevdiğim gibi mutlu son ile bitiyor . Ama yazar son sahnede öyle bir detayla karşınıza çıkıyor ki bu da duygusal bir krişendo oluşturuyor ... Umarım yazarın diğer kitaplarınıda okuyabiliriz..Yayınevine duyurulur ...

Ned ve Pip okuduğum en sade,gösterişsiz ama bir o kadar da mükemmel bir çiftti ciddi manada hayatıma,kararlarıma ve duygularıma etki ettiler kalıcı bir iz bıraktılar.

This book and the characters and stories within truly are VERY moving. Decisions made and the ripple effects over the years shown that makes you think deeply about what you would do and say in their shoes. -

I just love Pip and Ned. They seemed so real to me. It was like sitting on the porch or in the garden with them listening in on their life. -

"An Awesome Story of Love, Beautifully Written"
This story absolutely collided with my heart and is warmly written. I could not put it down and read it in one day. Written in the first person, this author certainly knows what true love is all about, and I applaud her for the intriguing presentation of this novel. Piper George during the last few years has started writing in a journal with the intent to provide it to the daughter, Amanda, she gave birth to at age 16. Piper, as a teen, knew she could not give the child the home or future she deserved. She had had the opportunity to hold her newborn for one hour before handing her over to her new adoptive parents. The journal contains letters she writes to Amanda, hopefully to give it to her as a gift in the future. Piper had been a nurse before becoming a full-time author of children's books. Her favorite creative writing location is on her front porch in Erie, Pennsylvania, directly across the street of an elementary school. She watches the kids and is inspired to write reality-based stories now for preteens. She's not a woman who is frilly...she prefers to wear holey jeans and t-shirts, seldom wearing make-up. Her curly unruly red hair is also part of her identity. She looks toward the street and sees a moving fan pulled up to the vacant house next door. A handsome man steps out of the van and she imagines he might be an athletic coach ... or is it couch! When he strides over to her porch and introduces himself as Edward Chesterfield (Ned, to his friends), she can't help but make a couple of funny comments which leaves Ned to think she's a nut-case. This novel is all about true love, not the dreamy romance stuff that puts a blush on your face when reading such a novel. This story will warm your heart, bring a tear or two, and a few laughs. It's wonderful... and it will embrace your heart. -

I had to change my rating because as the days passed and I talked with my friends that were also reading this (and disliking it), I realized I was doing it a disservice by rating it so high. People would see that and think it was an okay book. And it's not, by any stretch of the imagination.
The book is flat and one-dimensional. There is absolutely no fleshing out of the characters whatsoever. And while it is an interesting topic (adoption), the main character borders on obsessiveness and the support staff border on unsympathetic and creepy (WHAT boyfriend uses their PI status to do creeping around behind their girlfriends back (even if it was well-intentioned) to prove a point to them??).
There were many aspects of this story that were totally unbelievable and the constant repetition was tedious at best (I think she brings up living in Erie PA at LEAST 400 times) and eye-rolling annoying at worst.
I got nothing out of this book except relief when it was finished. Which is a sad thing to say about anything. My only consolation is that it only took me about 2 1/2 hrs to read. -
Sıcak,sımsıcak ve biraz da hüzünlü bir hikaye okudum.Kitaba Ekim'in 7'sinde başlamışım ve Ekim'in 14'ünde de bitirdim.Bence daha kısa sürede bitirilebilecek bir kitaptı.Gerçekten insanın eline aldığı ilk anda saran ve hızla kendini okutan kitaplardan biri.Benim yoğun zamanıma denk geldiği için elimde biraz süründü bana kalırsa.
Yakında yorumunu bloga girerim (ruyakitaplik.blogspot).Ama o zamana kadar kitabı biraz daha düşüneceğim sanırım.Çünkü bu kısacık kitabın bana gerçekten bir şeyler kattığını hissediyorum. -
Kitap akıcı bir dile sahip ve konu olarak kendisine çekiyor. Severek okuduğum, zaman zaman duygu yoğunlukları yaşadığımı söyleyebilirim. Piper karakteri üzerinden anlatılan konuyla bakış açımda değişiklikler yarattığını da eklemek isterim. :)
Kısacık ama dolu dolu bu kitabı okumanızı tavsiye ederim. Merak içerisinde sayfaları çevirirken nasıl bittiğini anlamayacaksınız bile.. ;)

For a character who claims she's at peace with her decision of 17 years ago, and doesn't live her life around it, sure does spend the entire book living her life, and making all decisions around that choice. Adequately written, however I found it a little tedious, didn't cry a lick.

4.25. Enjoyed this lovely adult love story with a serious subject entwined throughout. Another writer that makes her characters so real and relatable. I will read more of her books in the near future.

This is a short review. Cos there isn't really a lot to say.
Does this book tick all the boxes for a good women's fiction/romance novel? Yes.
Does this book have all the right characters to tell this story? Yes.
Does this book hit all the emotional highpoints? Sadly, no. I never felt any connection to the characters stories to get emotionally involved at all.
Still, I can see why this would be popular and think that it is worth recommending - just because I didn't make that connection to the characters, doesn't mean others won't. It is a very good story otherwise.

This is my second novel by Ms. Jacobs and it didn't disappoint. She writes words that are some poignant and pull at the heartstrings. Piper or Pip as she's called is a children/ya writer who is very successful. She does alot for charity by having her own called "Amanda's Pantry. What most of her fans and friend doesn't know is she was a teenaged mother who gave her daughter "Amanda away. Ned moves in next door to her and for a moment she feels a spark for him but eventually put it away after realizing he has a girlfriend. The book is told over a four year period as Pip writes in her journal about her daughter who is entering high school to the end of her time in high school. As previous readers have said this is not your typical romance. The romance aspect of Pip and Ned does not happen right away but builds over the years. A tearjerking wonderful story about the power of love even after letting go the one you love(Pip's daughter) for them to have a better life. The only regret is I would have loved to read when Pip actually get to meet her daughter but understood why the author wrote it the way she did. Life has ups and downs and is not neatly wrapped up like a romance novel.

Piper gave up a child for adoption when she was a teen. Her life is filled with thoughts of her daughter and she keeps journals written to her. She becomes a nurse and then author of children’s books. She also started a food pantry using the name she gave her daughter: Amanda. She starts off as friends with her new neighbor Nick, but eventually they become a couple and Piper tells him about “Amanda” and being the wonderful guy that he is, he finds “Amanda” and gives Piper closure with some footage of her high school graduation.

This is a book about love, yes, but about what love is and isn't, about the different kinds of love, and about finding your heart and hearing what it tells you. The moving story of Piper, Ned and Amanda will make you think about what love means to you. -
One of the best books I've read in years.
I haven't been able to put it down! It is now 3:47 a.m. and I just had to finish before I could sleep. The last two chapters were amazing and heart wrenching. I feel like I lived this book. Thank you Holly.
