Game of Thrones is a global phenomenon that has attracted record viewing figures for HBO and won a huge international fan base as well as collecting numerous awards and nominations. But surely a fantasy involving dragons, ice monsters and heads on spikes is about as far from the world of business as it’s possible to get, isn’t it?

I gotta say, it was quite well-done. Obviously, I found some things I disagreed with. But altogether, it makes sense, it uses good examples, it shows some sensibility regarding I/O psychology. And it's also quite funny and well-written. Also, the author seems to know the show quite well. And even the real life examples are those which everybody knows. Not the kind "only British/American people will understand". For those reason I gotta give 5/5 to the book itself. Regarding the Czech translation... well, sometimes the people who made translation would deserve a kick in the groin.

Takhle to umím, takový jsem, a jenom když si připustíme, jací jsme, můžeme dostat to, co chceme.

I recently read an article that said people who read literary fiction instead of genre fiction are better at reading emotions, so it's interesting to see how genre fiction can be used to understand people's actions, especially in a business context. I think this is a really clever way to use storytelling to understand key concepts and learnings to apply at work rather than just delving into theory and it's also backed up with other stories from the "real world". The chapters are short and snappy, so I wouldn't call it a massively intellectual management tome, but that's not what it's trying to be - it's using analogies to demonstrate theories other people have developed. It also works in the reverse - analysing the actions of the characters to better understand why certain events in the series played out they way they did. Minimal references to swearing or nudity also help with the "Suitable for Work" issue.
