Health-conscious consumers read nutritional labels, but it's nearly impossible to get the nutrients we need with diet alone. To get the USDA-recommended daily quota of vitamin D, for example, you need to eat 15 eggs or 26 sardines; of iron, 414 almonds or 15 cups of broccoli. So we rely on nutritional supplements—vitamins and minerals, probiotics and enzymes—but the variety of pills, products, and elixirs on the market today is overwhelming. And, as we have seen in recent news, some of these products are downright fakes. Trusted natural health physician and bestselling author Tieraona Low Dog, M.D. provides a personalized approach to using nutritional supplements for your specific health needs, helping you navigate the complex and often confusing landscape of vitamins, minerals, and more.

Dr. Low Dog explains the basics about every essential nutritional supplement and guides the reader in creating a personalized supplement plan, tailored to individual genetics, age, gender, and lifestyle. Low Dog evaluates current research, explains the relationship between food and supplements, describes how medications cause chemical imbalances in the body, and advises on how to judge brands and read labels.

Low Dog engages and encourages readers to take charge of their own health and provides guidance to find the right combination of nutritional supplements to improve mood, strength, energy, and well-being.

Absolutely the best, most concise book on supplements I've ever read! Part of me wants to share it with my friends/family and part of me says "get your own!" Definitely a keeper, a book I will refer to again & again.
Dr. Low Dog is very honest about what your meds, lifestyle, and the environment do to deplete our health. This weekend I am going to sit down with it and revamp my entire medicine cabinet for MY needs!

    Thorough guide to supplements.

I've been a fan of Low Dog ever since reading her book Healthy at Home: Get Well and Stay Well Without Prescriptions. I prefer to use herbal medicine & whole foods to stay healthy but like many I do still take the occasional supplement. Prior to herbal methods I had an entire shelf filled with supplements of every kind you can think of. Eventually after hearing the negative reports on the news about supplements & the questionable additives & fillers I decided to cut them out almost entirely. Thanks to this new book by Low Dog I can sort through the noise & figure out what is right for me. She even explains about fillers & additives. She says what she feels is safe & what she feels we should avoid.

This is not a book you can blow through. You will want to read it and re-read it & refer to it again & again. After reading I looked into supplements I thought might be useful to me but found myself once again feeling overwhelmed by all the options. The solution now is to pick up this book & re-read what I'm looking into. This has been so helpful to me in making decisions about my health. I have learned that I likely get the majority of the nutrients from my diet (I don't eat the typical American diet. I eat those "icky" things like beef liver, organ meats, egg yolks, pasture raised meats, cooked spinach, use cast iron, consume herbs, full fat raw dairy, etc.) yet even though my diet is considered more nutritional according to Log Dogs book, I did discover I can benefit from supplements in some areas. It is also helpful for me to determine what is lacking in my families diet. One easy example is I should probably supplement with calcium. Apparently I'm not getting as much as I think I am. This one is an easy one, I ordered Adora - Calcium Supplement Dark Chocolate. No pills to swallow & no fighting to get anyone to take their vitamin.

A downside to the book is Low Dog doesn't give any recommendations to brands. So you really do have to do your homework & research to figure out what works for you personally. This isn't necessarily a bad thing as all of this research & re-reading only enforces the information making you a better educated consumer.

Low Dog also provides charts to assist you with various medical conditions & supplement recommendations as well as possible drug (prescription & non) reactions.

Overall this is a very balanced book. Integrated medicine is truly a wonderful balance between conventional & non conventional treatments. I wholeheartedly agree that we need to try something less invasive first before going to more extreme measures regarding our health. My favorite Dr. was integrated. At the time I didn't grasp all of it as I was still very young. But it was that Dr. & no other that actually helped me heal & unbeknownst to him, led me towards a more holistic lifestyle.

Overall, a great reference for choosing supplements to improve your health. The layout of the book lends itself well to reading cover to cover or using as a reference. The author includes a list of resources to dig deeper on individual supplements.

My only gripe, and it's relatively minor, is that the author occasionally deviates from scientific evidence into the "art" of belief, though she explains this briefly. Overall, it's worth your time to read and integrate the advice, even if all you need is a quality multi-vitamin. (Though, you likely need a few more supplements - B12 if you're vegan/vegetarian? Fish Oil if you don't eat fish? or... read on, because it depends on your health and lifestyle.

As someone who follows a lot of health and fitness news, didn't get a lot from this book, however, I would recommend it for anyone who knows nothing about health and nutrition they will learn a lot from the book.

Being healthy is very simple you just have to follow the following steps:
    1. Avoid processed food as much as you can.
    2. Add vegetables to your daily diet (diversity in food is important).
    3. Eat protein and healthy fats (Olive oil, omega 3, MCT, etc...)
    4. Get sun exposure (at least 10 minutes per day)
    5. Exercise.

This is all that you if you are a young person with no diseases, but for someone older and with a medical condition the author goes more deeply into what vitamins/minerals to take and in what quantities.

Lots of great information in this book although I would like to see more research done on Vitamin B6. I became toxic from vitamin B6 simply by taking a multivitamin that had just 8mg in it. The recommended daily allowance is 1.3mg for women my age. I suffered neurological damage as well as heart palpitations for over a year. I belong to two Facebook groups for sufferers of b6 toxicity. Sadly, there are a lot of pregnant women in the group from being told to take massive amounts of b6 during their pregnancy. I know doctors are taught that this is a water soluble vitamin, but that’s not always the case. People should be very wary of taking large doses of this vitamin.

When I picked up this book at the library, I don't think I intended to read it all the way through as it looked like a reference book, but that's exactly what I did do. The author is passionate about the subject as she writes about all the great things that each vitamin or mineral is responsible for. I liked the layout for each section (vitamin/mineral) which included headings such as "Food Sources" and "Signs of Deficiency".

I liked this book well enough that I'm thinking of obtaining my own copy for future reference.

  • Carol

This has valuable information, including what foods supply the vitamins and minerals recommended. The author is easy to read, passionate and well educated on the material. I believe this is a good resource if you have health issues you wish to address with supplements, perhaps in addition to a medical consult. Personally, I think the medical system is too emphatic on big pharma and this is a helpful book to explore alternative material.

Although organized as a handbook for vitamins, nutrients, and supplement, Fortify Your Life is a fascinating cover-to-cover read. If you want, read the sections of greatest interest to you first, but read the whole thing. Each nutrient is handled in a systematic way that does not repeat itself. The sections are: Introduction; What It Does; Signs of Deficiency; Risk for Deficiency; Supplement Consideration; Partner Nutrition; and Special Populations. I did not agree with all the recommendations, but nearly.

An extremely concise and thorough guide on what a practitioner and patient should know about supplements. Not only do you learn about the roles of vitamins, minerals, and nutraceuticals; but also the importance of supplement quality, dosing, and potential drug interactions and depletions.

I will continue to use this book as a reference and guide in my work as a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner in order to further support my clients!

The world of vitamins, minerals and supplements is complex and confusing. Dr. Low’s book is an apt resource that cuts the noise and educates the consumer so they can become an advocate for their health care and an active agent in her wellbeing. I highly recommend this book.

Super appropriate book for today's pandemic! Boosting ones own immune system is better than any drug, vaccine or regulation. Its a big tedious on the audible recording - like the book is a better option so it can be highlighted. Very informative

  • Yycdaisy

If you want to learn about how vitamins, minerals and supplements work, this is an excellent book.

  • Yvonne

Very interesting book on vitamins and minerals. Dr. Low Dog makes some of the decisions on which vitamins to take easier. Also I like the charts in the back that list which ones you need to take for certain lifestyles and ages, which medications deplete vitamins and minerals in your body and what you need to replace to stay healthy.

I want to send my thanks to Dr. Tieraona Low Dog, author of Fortify Your Life: Your Guide to Vitamins, Minerals, and More and Goodreads First Reads Giveaway that I won in the Giveaway.

I will be keeping Fortify Your Life: Your Guide to Vitamins, Minerals, and More for reference for a long time. I loved the glossary of terms and the index to give me the ability to look up topics of special interest. The information in this book explains what conditions result from deficiencies, foods that prove to help with a deficiency and suggestions of recommended daily amounts of vitamins and minerals. Warnings were posted on when you can get too much of something you need and the negative results so with this guide and the easy to understand reasoning it is an excellent reference for the average person.

I have learned so much that I didn't know about vitamins and minerals. For instance, melatonin is actually a pain reliever, and zinc is better to take than vitamin C for colds! The author makes it easy to understand, helping you find what's relevant to you and your health. I will continue to come back to this book again and again for reference.
