As the winter of 1921 slowly turns to spring, certain residents of Brighton find themselves at the mercy of a poison pen writer, who is spreading rumours and innuendo about the town. Disturbed by the scandal this could cause, Mrs Wilton, one of Clara's first clients, returns to Brighton's first female private detective seeking help. But how can Clara find a person who chooses to remain anonymous? Could the elusive Mrs Prinner be the key?

In the meantime she has other matters to contend with, as Inspector Park-Coombs of the Brighton Constabulary is convinced there is a traitor among his men. A mysterious accident and missing evidence suggests someone on the inside is giving the criminals of Brighton a helping hand. They might even be responsible for Clara's near fatal encounter with Billy 'Razor' Brown the year before. Park-Coombs needs an unbiased outsider to investigate on his behalf, but is Clara in over her head? And could the traitor be someone she already knows?

Torn between her two cases, Clara must dash across Brighton in a frantic quest to find the truth. In the process she will discover more about the town's hidden underworld than she ever wanted to know and put the life of a policeman in danger. Can Clara reveal Park-Coombs' traitor before it is too late?

When Clara Fitzgerald us asked it look into a spate of poison pen letters she is doubtful about her ability to solve the mystery and thinks it should be a case for the police. But she lets herself be persuaded into investigating.

Meanwhile Inspector Park-Coombs has a commission for her. He believes there is someone at the police station who is the pay of criminals but he doesn't want to make it an official investigation if he can discover the culprit by unofficial means.

So Clara has her hands full with two cases and then Tommy, her brother, meets a new friend and Clara finds herself acting as peacemaker between him and Annie their friend and housekeeper.

I enjoyed this entertaining and well written mystery set in the 1920s in Brighton. Clara is developing into a strong character who is not afraid of talking to anyone in order to get to the bottom of the mysteries she has to investigate. I like Tommy and Annie as well and between them they make a formidable team. Currently this is the latest volume in the series and I hope there are going to be some more in due course.

I don’t think this is the strongest of the series but I do enjoy the books so I gave it 4 instead of 3 stars.
Clara, Brighton’s first female private detective, is asked by an old client to investigate a spate of poison pen letters being sent to residents of a particular part of the town. The local police chief inspector, a friend to Clara, also asks if she can discreetly look into what may turn out to be corruption on the force. An odd request but he feels it would be better handled if it was kept quiet and low key.
While her brother, Tommy, does some investigation for her at the library he meets a young female author of crime fiction called Agatha. He befriends her and asks her home to meet Clara.
I was disappointed to see Tommy is no further forward with his rehabilitation, in fact no mention is made of whether he is still seeing the doctor who felt he could help him.
Annie’s character was rather unsympathetic in this story and she came over a bit petulant where Tommy was concerned. All a bit unappealing.
You find out well before the end who the likely poison pen letter writers are so it’s about the confrontation.
Most things get solved with suggestions of some things being revisited in later books. Though it was a slight story it was enjoyable and I’ll happily carry on with the series.
