Cliff Dreamers
By Jacqui Wood
Mia lives with her grandmother on Dogger Island. Her mother died when she was a baby. Her grandmother treats her like a slave and has shown no affection towards her.
At just 11 winters old, Mia is shocked to discover she is to become the Shaman's pure one. Maids don't become pure ones until at least 14 winters old. Mia's grandmother tells her that the family is blessed and that Mia will stay with the Shaman forever! Usually maids are only pure ones for a few winters.
Mia must escape...but how? Only men are allowed to leave the Island. Woman are forbidden to travel in boats. She meets up with Borg, who is shocked to discover her fate - he has a plan. The Traders are here, and he knows Kemit well. Kemit takes pity on Mia and asks his crew whether they would be willing to risk saving her - they agree.
The last night the traders are on the Island, there is a ceremony and much mead is drunk. Mia manages to get away and they make a dash for it.
The Shaman is furious, because he knows that Mia is special. Her father was a Prince of the Icin tribe, and Mia is to become Queen, upon his mothers death. The Shaman also knows that Mia has special powers. She is a goddess. The Shaman put up a reward and Tashk, the leader of the traders, heads the search party.
Tashk almost manages to catch up with them, but Kemit knows the dangerous waters like no other, and they manage to escape.
Mia , Borg and the traders go on many adventures together. Mia is able to prophesy, so no harm comes to them, and they continue their journey toward the Inland Sea.
Cliff Dreamers was a thoroughly enjoyable read. The plot was well thought out, and the characters had substance. There's a map at the beginning of the book, which shows their journey. The Author Jacqui Wood, is an archaeologist, and specialises in prehistoric Europeans, and it showed in the book! The descriptions of the huts that they lived in. The clothes the wore. The food they cooked - and how it was prepared. I feel I not just read a novel, but also learnt a lot about prehistoric Europe!
Well done Jacqui - I look forward to your next novel! -
