Haunted by the untimely deaths of his mother, little sister, and a childhood friend, listless high schooler Haruomi Io has trouble engaging with anything or anyone. Of course, that doesn't mean others have trouble engaging with him-a fact he discovers to his dismay when he finds himself the target of a trigger-happy group calling themselves the "Seventh Gospel Organization." Having newfound enemies may be rough, but Haruomi's unexpected ally in the form of a demoness calling herself Zilch may turn out to be even more of a handful...Still, there's something to be said for a dose of the supernatural (and more than a few buxom girls) when it comes to casting off the doldrums!

Oh look. Boobs. And butts that totally don't work that way. And boobs that totally don't work that way. And clothing that really, REALLY doesn't work that way. And nuns who don't dress that way. And "lolita" characters with boobs that go on forever. And more butts that don't work that way. And a plethora of panty shots. And a shower scene. And another shower scene with close ups. And groping. Can't forget the groping.

This could have been a good story. As it was, the premise was interesting (scientists try to get power they shouldn't and shit hits the fan, causing church vs. demons), if done a million times. Heck, I love a good badass, gun-toting nun in inappropriate clothing (see
    Chrono Crusade).

The problem I have with this is that despite its premise, they tossed it out the window in favor of ridiculous amounts of boobs, butts, panty shots, groping, boob windows, clothing falling off... I could go on for a while.

Anyway, the story centers on Bland Center-of-the-Harem (TM), Haruomi. His life is boring. He doesn't know any recent songs. He doesn't seem to pay any attention to his friends whatsoever, and yet they invite him along all the time despite him obviously ignoring them. He is then attacked by a small creepy child, accidentally molests a big-boobed nun (despite where his hand was in the previous panel), and gets a make out session with a pink-haired booby babe. Suddenly, his life is exciting as he's chased by a religious organization that wants to kill or capture all the girls who have fused with demons and their wielders!

Oh, and did I mention ?

The art is painfully generic booby, butt, panty-flashing. I swear I've seen this exact style on deviantart a hundred times, with and without the nudity and undaroos.

If you want a bad ass nun fighting demons with one by her side, go read Chrono Crusade if you can find it. If you want child experiments with super powers on a slight rampage, go check out
    Kagerou Daze or
    Psycho Busters.

Frankly, there are a million church vs demons, evil organization manga out there. This one's claim to fame is "boobies!" and nothing else. It would be one thing if it had a good story to make up for the in-your-face fan service, but all it's got is the generic brand of what could have been an interesting story.

Once again, I am amazed at my ability to make myself sound like an idiot. If you also want to see me look like an idiot, then check out my YouTube review of
    Demonizer Zilch Volume 1.

This looks very much like a harem manga. The author weaves in the Catholic Church although he seems to know little about it (maybe he read Paradise Lost). The story is unclear; the second star is for the art.

Definitely explicit, like the cover says. But I love my fan-service in a good manga. Love, love this first volume. Can't wait to pick up the next installment!

******* I won this book as part of the First Reads Giveaway in return for an honest review ********

I won this book in a drawing 2 months ago, but it just came in the mail 4 days ago. I've been a huge fan of anime for over 20 yrs now, but I've never read very much manga. This is partially due to the fact that there is so much out there that I don't know where to start. The other factor is that these books cost so much that I don't want to spend that much money on something that I don't know whether or not I'm going to enjoy. I've entered tons of manga giveaways here on Goodreads hoping to win something that I ended up liking so I would have some direction towards what to buy. I ended up loving this book and will definitely pick up the next volume as soon as it comes out.

Milan Matra is the creator/artist/writer for this series. This is someone I'd never heard of prior to receiving this book. I did some research and found out that he has another manga series out called Omamori Himari that also has an anime based on it. I'll have to check both the books and anime out, but I digress. Let's start with Matra's writing for this series. The title character, Zilch, is a demon that has been genetically fused to the body of a human girl in a laboratory. That's where the demonizer part of the title comes in. In the book, the demonizers are also called "Branches". Evidently, there are 72 of these Branches and Zilch is Branch #29. As the series opens, Zilch is after this boy named Haroumi, but some agents for the Seventh Gospel Organization are after her. Then there is guy that has at least one Branch of his own. Oh, Haroumi's father and one of his colleagues are mixed up in the events as well.

Milan Matra has woven an extremely nice story that involves demons put into the body of young girls by scientists that work for Satanists bent on whatever diabolical things Satanists want to do, demon slayers that work for the church, and a clueless teenage hero that is drawn into the conflict between the two sides that can't help but to be physically attracted to the beautiful girls on each side. The main feeling of the story is one of intrigue as the mystery surrounding the demonizers and how they are connected to Haroumi is slowly unraveled, but there are some funny moments thrown in as well. There are even a few touching (both literally and figuratively) scenes. Matra's writing has me eagerly awaiting the next book. The writing gets 5 stars.

Matra's art is pretty stereotypical manga/anime style. All the characters look amazing. The females are exaggeratedly sexy. Zilch and one of the members of the Seventh Gospel Organization named Murohime, also known by codename Fox 4, are the two characters that stand out the most as being overly sexy. Of course, those are also the two characters that Haroumi is attracted to. Lots of manga and anime have plenty of cute girls that have jiggling boobs and revealing outfits, but this had some more ecchi elements that focused on sexual playfulness and upskirt shots than general anime has. Towards the end there is some nudity from both characters. So, this isn't something you'd want kids reading. I love the artwork and the art score is 5 stars also.

The beautiful 5 star art and the intriguing 5 star story make this an all-around 5 star book. I will definitely get the rest of the series if the quality stays this high. It just sucks that volume 2 doesn't come out until September. I'll be chomping at the bit until then.
