'Surprise… You're pregnant!'
Obstetrician Avery Wallace has uttered those words but never had them said to her…till now, just three weeks after her unexpected New Year's Eve with the hospital's "Dr. Romeo," Justin Garrett. But Avery's sworn off marriage, motherhood and men—especially doctors. And it isn't attraction she feels for the sexy ER doc…it's pregnancy hormones!
'Let's get married.'
One night isn't enough for Justin, not when he's crushed on Avery for years. But a baby? Not in his plans. So no one's more surprised by his proposal…or more disappointed by her refusal. The hospital's buzzing but Justin doesn't care. He knows what to do—and he has a little over eight months to do it: convince Avery to make him a husband before he becomes a daddy.

I liked it alright. It was a decent enough story, but the writing felt off at times. I believe this is my first by this author so I'm not sure if Avery was supposed to be stilted or if this was just the way the author writes dialogue. It was mostly Avery, but sometimes the dialogue from other characters was a little weird too, so who knows, it might just be her writing.
But there were some other things that felt off too. Like two doctors so caught up in the moment that BOTH of them forget to use a condom (one of the doctors is an OBGYN . . . . yeah).
And the conversation between Justin and his Dad. I LOVED that he told his dad off, but then that's it. There was no follow up and it felt like a loose end. His father should have apologized, or gotten angry and refused to apologize, or *something*. Instead it was just dropped.
I get that this is a series and maybe the big moment will come in another book, but in this one, with this son, it was left unfinished.
It was good enough that I'll look for other books by her, so that says something. -
Another great book from Brenda Harlen! Avery and Justin work as Drs. in the same hospital and have been fighting an attraction for 3 years. Finally after working New Years Eve together they give into that attraction and a baby is the result. Avery doesn't trust Justin because he is known as Dr. Romeo at the hospital and she doesn't want to have a relationship with a dr. due to her childhood having two parents as drs. Justin warms to the idea of being a daddy and wants to marry Avery. She is stubborn but Justin does not give up. I love that he was somewhat of a player but there were really no women in the book that caused them any issues. I felt the issues they had were more in line with real life. Justin did some really sweet things for Avery making this story a romantic, sexy (they had great chemistry) fun read. Of course loved hearing about the past Garretts and meeting new characters. Mainly Avery's brother! This is a great series I would highly recommend!

The best thing about the Those Engaging Garretts series is that you can pick up anywhere and not feel lost. Each couple has their own story to tell and the rest is woven in subtly but efficiently.
Avery and Justin are well-developed characters right from the start. Harlen made it very easy to see how their simmering attraction could lead to a moment of wild abandon ... and a baby. The pacing of their relationship was perfect for their personalities.
The hospital setting reminded me of why I fell in love with Grey's Anatomy (McDreamy/Wall-Ice). Loved the gossip and the jealous nurse.
I love the contrast of their families' support. I got a huge kick from the epilogue - the most unique out of any book I've read.
There are so many Garretts and in-laws in this family that I look forward to meeting them all. -
Justin and Avery work in a hospital together. He is an ER doctor and she is a OB doctor. They work well together perfessionally. Justin would like it to be more but Avery is aware of the hospital's rumor mill that Justin is a love em and leave kind of guy. Justin gets stuck working on New Years eve and Avery gets called in on a labor and delivery call. She end ups staying and helping out in the ER after. Things get interesting when She kisses Justin as New Years Day arrives. He takes things into his own hands and drags her into a closet where they hook up Grey's Anatomy style ;).
A baby results from their liaison on New Years. Avery has some issue to work thru and Justin has to prove to Avery he is not the guy the in those hospital rumors.
A cute story for your reading pleasure. -
Justin Garrett and Avery Wallace had a fling in supply closet, because she didn't believe in marriage after her fiancée left her and go married, and she had a rules about dating doctors, but when she found out she was pregnant, they fell in love with each other and realize that love is a chance you got to take or you miss out on the missed opportunity of never knowing what out there.

Actually like this story. It wasn't too cute, but didn't try to hard to make me like or dislike the characters. However, I must say I wanted to punch Avery's mother. Love the ending so much I would like Ms. Harlen to write a sequel.

Too predictable.
-
Two doctors who've been attracted to each other for three years finally give into their feelings at New Year's. Neither is looking for a relationship, but Mother Nature had other ideas. Avery doesn't really understand family dynamics and Justin is willing to show her.

I want a Garrett.

This was a fair read but I had a lot of struggles throughout. I loved the hero, Justin. He and the heroine had been drawn to each other for 3.5 years and she avoided him at all costs because he had a playboy reputation. I wish our heroine, Avery, would have been a lovable character. Instead she turned into the most annoying female I have ever read about and that's saying a lot since I read approx 250-300 books per year.
As you travel through this story you already know Avery's age and credentials. You learn quickly that she had very lousy parents that completely ignored her and Ryder, her brother. She suffers from a lot of psychological and emotional damage as well as abandonment issues because she was born to two parents who only married because of a pregnancy and were set on their careers. They never wanted their children, never loved them or took the time to get to know them. Avery was stuck on rewind and her thoughts and self talk were so redundant that I almost gave up on the story a good dozen times. If you had not been aware of her age and just gone by her lack of maturity and the way she carried on you would have expected her to be an immature sixteen to eighteen year old girl.
I have had an issue with this type of story for years now, a story in which one of the characters, usually the female MC, where the repetition of thoughts and feelings are out of control.
The HEA was good and I enjoyed the last eleven pages but that was about it. -
It's interesting when you're asked to review a book that is apparently number 9 in a long series. However, there is no need to read the previous eight books because they can act as a stand alone except the reader is left knowing that there is some kind of history with this one particularly large family.
