I felt like I missed a previous book, that had all the background/world building in it. This was incredibly hard to read, between the horrendous editing that forced me to slow my reading speed to try decipher what the author meant & the plot being rough around the edges, with a bad stop & go feel to the flow, made this not an enjoyable read. The little bit of world building really didn't help to understand the story. There were a lot of holes in the plot & some places that made absolutely no sense to me. Paige & Calix did not feel fully developed, they were at times flat & just annoying. Some of the so called humor just came across as insulting. The kicker, the epilogue was not even an actual epilogue, the only thing it gives you at a glimpse in their future, is they are playing in the snow (not even sure how far in the future), with a giant mystery thrown at you about Calix by Victor. If I had had an actual paper book, not my iPad, I would have thrown it at the wall! I really wanted to give up midway, I had to really force myself to finish reading the story. To give one positive, great cover art!

I thought this was a different series by this author but it still has the same characters. I tried to get through the earlier ones but something in the writing makes me irritated. I found the same with this. I barely made it a few chapters before giving up. I love science fiction but this was beyond me belief.

Sadly, I think I have to stop reading this author.

This book was different. There was a lot going in and sometimes it was hard to keep up and remember everything that was said but I still enjoyed it. I can tell the author worked really hard trying to make it all easy to understand. Cal was an awesome alien. I really like him and his whole (alien) family and how great they were to Paige. She was broken in some ways but together they were perfect.

The overall plot was fast paced with some action and the romance was beautiful. I love the idea of soulmates and this was different then the ones I’ve read in the past. Add in a villain who makes you angry, great secondary characters and magic and it was a great read.

I’m giving it 3 stars because while I felt the author tried to make it easy to follow, most of the time I was confused and having to go back and reread parts because it seemed like I missed something. This could all just be me and I wasn’t able to grasp it all. I did enjoy it though and would be willing to read more in the series. #2OCCJD

    DNF -- needs improvement

The premise of the story piqued my interest, but the execution leaves much to be desired. Character development remains shallow, wavering between "tell" and internal monologue. If this were a short story, then the stunted character development would be acceptable. The heroine accepts whatever is told to her without critical thought. Strong emphasis on physical beauty negates other qualities the protagonists might bring to each other and sends a message that a woman isn't particularly worthy of love, affection, devotion, etc. unless she's beautiful. That, unfortunately, happens to afflict most romantic fiction. A competent editor and diligent revision would improve the story, as well as catch those possessivess masquerading as plurals and improper capitalization.

    Interesting Alien romance

This was an interesting alien romance and I enjoyed the storyline a lot but I felt that some parts of the story switched off so quickly that I felt I missed something. I really loved the alien world that Serena Simpson created and enjoyed Cal and Paige's romance and their battle against the Sudir kept me entertained. I liked that Paige was a size sixteen woman and not some perfectly shapely paragon and that Cal found her shape appealing. I can relate to a heroine who is not perfect. Despite the one complaint I had with the story, I will definitely read the other books in the series.

    Not good :(

Really surprised by all the 5 stars reviews. I don't get it.

I rolled my eyes so many times in the book it's not even funny anymore. I'm sure this writer is new to writing as the flow to the story was all over the place.

That said, the characters were okay and I did like the storyline but I think it really needs to be re-written. Couldn't finish reading it. Got to the part where the alien is explaining things to her. I really did try to read it but just couldn't get over how corny it was. Sorry.

Won't recommend. But give it a go if your just starting reading and haven't read a decent book before.

    Such a surprise!

This story has more depth than I expected! The world-building is great, the characters have layers, and the struggles through the battles make sense. Calix is such a sweetie, Paige is a delight with understandable diffidence, and their chemistry is wonderful. I look forward to more from this close-knit group and to discovering what secret Cal's brother is keeping...and if it relates to the Sudir's focus...and just who exactly is the scarred man...!

Paige is living a normal life until she witnesses aliens roughing up someone in an alleyway. She runs away hoping to escape what she saw, but ends up running right to Cal. She learns a lot about herself, even finding out she has to be the one to fight Sudir. I found this storyline to be interesting but most parts I couldn’t get into. Overall, I’ll read more from this author in the future.

A nice read, good start to series

It was a little awkward in the beginning to me, but I'm glad I stuck with it. It seems like it's a huge plot and we only see the beginning. Really enjoyed this read and look forward to reading the others in this series and by this author.

Simpson really needs an editor. With errors the whole way through, at the half way point, the writing became absolutely abysmal, including regular use of “your” instead of “you’re”. I also found the dialogue incredibly stilted.

    Soul-Bonded to the Alien

This is a very interesting series. I have to read the about Rylan, he is intriguing. I was hoping they had finally gotten rid of the Sudir.

It is a great book to read

    Great book!

This is the second time I've read this book. I didn't recognize the series when I decided to get the second book and decided to read the books in order. Didn't take long to realize I'd read it before and that it was just as good the second time around. It is about meeting the love of your life, both of you accepting who you are inside, and learning to dig deep inside yourself to protect yourself and everyone you hold dear.

I really tried to stick with it but, kept putting down my ebook. It felt to me like it went on and on. "I got the idea now lets move on with the story"....is what I kept saying to myself. Then I just gave up because why am I struggling to finish a book with my very limited reading time! So now I feel like a ding bat for forging ahead and getting to page 70.....hurumph.

  • Christine

I'm sure there is a good tale in here somewhere but I missed it mostly to due to the writing style.

There's no hook, no mystery lasts longer than a few pages.

    Could not stay interested.

  • Erin

It made little sense a lot of the time and rambled on. Everything took too long and the grammar and sentences were in SERIOUS NEED of proper editing.
Dialogue was rough some of the time made zero sense.
Plot was like the blurb but was heavily convoluted and dragged itself to death.
